Symptomatic Spinal Migration of Subarachnoid Hemorrhage due to Ruptured Intradural Vertebral Artery Aneurysm
A 55-year-old patient was admitted to the hospital with severe acute back pain. Thoracolumbar magnetic resonance (MR) imaging showed hemorrhage in subarachnoidal-subdural space. On cranial MR imaging and MR angiography, an aneurysm was suspected in the V4 segment of the right vertebral artery. Angiography showed a fusiform dissecting aneurysm in the V4 segment of right vertebral artery. The final diagnosis was ruptured V4 segment aneurysm with subsequent symptomatic migration of hemorrhage into the spinal subarachnoidal-subdural space. The patient was treated endovascularly by coil occlusion of both the aneurysm and vertebral artery. This rare cause and possible mechanisms for spinal migration of intracranial hemorrhage after aneurysmal rupture is discussed
Surface modification of CdSeS nanocrystals for polymer hybrid solar cells
We report the synthesis of fluorene-carbazole derivatives as capping agents for CdSeS nanocrystals and present their performance in polymer hybrid solar cells. CdSeS nanocrystals and different ligands consisting of fluorene and carbazole units were synthesized and characterized. Both oleic acid and pyridine capped CdSeS nanocrystals were used as reference materials in polymer hybrid solar cells. We observed that our synthesized materials show better efficiencies depending on their structures. In comparison with the reference cells consisting of pyridine capped CdSeS nanocrystals, ligand capped CdSeS shows better efficiency due to electron withdrawing and accepting groups in its structure. The reason behind the superiority of our ligands compared to the reference pyridine is the donor and/or acceptor based compatibility of the combined structures and effective surface modification as well
International Forum: The Turkish perspective on apheresis activity: The Turkish apheresis registry report
Therapeutic apheresis is an extracorporeal treatment that selectively removes abnormal cells or harmful sub-stances in the blood that are associated with or cause certain diseases. During the last decades the application of therapeutic apheresis has expanded to a broad spectrum of hematological and non-hematological diseases due to various studies on the clinical efficacy of this procedure. In this context there are more than 30 centers per-forming therapeutic apheresis and registered in the apheresis database in Turkey. Herein, we, The Turkish Apheresis Registry, aimed to analyze some key articles published so far from Turkey regarding the use of apheresis for various indications
Dientamoeba fragilis, a neglected cause of diarrhea, successfully treated with secnidazole
Objective To evaluate the pathogenicity of Dientamoeba fragilis by comparing it with Giardia lamblia and to investigate the effect of a single dose of secnidazole in dientamoebiasis. Methods Stool samples of 400 patients, admitted to the Department of Parasitology, Celal Bayar University, were examined by direct wet mount, formalin-ethyl acetate concentration and trichrome staining methods on three consecutive days. All cases positive for D. fragilis were treated with a single dose of secnidazole, 30 mg/kg for children, and 2 g for adults. On the seventh and fourteenth days, at the end of the treatment, stool samples were examined by the same methods, and clinical symptoms were again evaluated. Results D. fragilis and G. lamblia were detected in 35 (8.8%) and 34 (8.5%) cases, respectively. The most frequent symptoms were found to be abdominal pain and diarrhea in both infections. D. fragilis was eradicated in 34 (97.1%) patients with a single dose of secnidazole, but a second dose was necessary in one patient. Clinical symptoms disappeared in 27 (77.1%) and decreased in eight (22.9%) cases, after eradication. Conclusions These data suggested that D. fragilis is as prevalent and pathogenic as G. lamblia , and secnidazole seems to be highly effective in achieving parasitologic and clinical cure. To our knowledge, this is the first report of secnidazole being used in the treatment of dientamoebiasis
Two-to-one internal resonances in a shallow curved beam resting on an elastic foundation
Vibrations of shallow curved beams are investigated. The rise function of the beam is assumed to be small. Sinusoidal and parabolic curvature functions are examined. The immovable end conditions result in mid-plane stretching of the beam which leads to nonlinearities. The beam is resting on an elastic foundation. The method of multiple scales, a perturbation technique, is used in search of approximate solutions of the problem. Two-to-one internal resonances between any two modes of vibration are studied. Amplitude and phase modulation equations are obtained. Steady state solutions and stability are discussed, and a bifurcation analysis of the amplitude and phase modulation equations are given. Conditions for internal resonance to occur are discussed, and it is found that internal resonance is possible for the case of parabolic curvature but not for that of sinusoidal curvature
Precision measurement of the ratio of the Λb0 to (B)over-bar0 lifetimes
The LHCb measurement of the lifetime ratio of the Lambda(0)(b) baryon to the (B) over bar (0) meson is updated using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb(-1) collected using 7 and 8 TeV centre-of-mass energy pp collisions at the LHC. The decay modes used are Lambda(0)(b) -> J/psi pK(-) and (B) over bar (0) -> J/psi pi K-+(-), where the pi K-+(-) mass is consistent with that of the (K) over bar*(0)(892) meson. The lifetime ratio is determined with unprecedented precision to be 0.974 +/- 0.006 +/- 0.004, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This result is in agreement with original theoretical predictions based on the heavy quark expansion. Using the current world average of the (B) over bar (0) lifetime, the Lambda(0)(b) lifetime is found to be 1.479 +/- 0.009 +/- 0.010 ps. (C) 2014 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V

Interactions of Thyroid Hormones; Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1), IGF Binding Proteins, and Nutritional Anthropometric Parameters in School Children with Goiter Detected by Palpation
Aim: In the present study we evaluated anthropometric indices, serum thyroid hormones, insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and IGF-binding proteins (IGFBPs) levels, in children who has palpable goiter at endemic population. We aimed to 1) compare children with palpable goiter with healthy peers, 2) detect interaction of anthropometric indices, serum thyroid hormones, IGF-1 and IGFBPs parameters in both groups 3) evaluate the effects of their nutritional status to these parameters. Subjects and Methods: We performed goiter palpation to 1018 child and found goiter at 81 child. Seventy-three pubertal children were included in this study. Seventy-five healthy children were defined as the control group. Weight and height of all children were measured. Thyroid hormone levels, IGF-1, IGFBP-3, and IGFBP-1 were assessed in both groups. Results: Height and weight SIDS were significantly lower in children who had goiter by palpation than healthy peers (p 0.05). Serum IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 levels were significantly lower (p < 0.05) in underweight children with goiter than normal weight group. In the presence of goiter, IGF-1 levels were lower (B: 0.97, 95% CI: 0.96-0.98, p < 0.001). Conclusion: In endemic areas, children with palpable goiter were shorter and thinner than the healthy peers. Thyroid hormones were between the reference ranges. In children with palpable goiter, IGF-1 levels were lower and IGFBP-3 and IGFBP-1 levels were not different from the healthy control group. However, at the presence of goiter IGF-1 levels decrease. This decrease can be the result of insufficient nutrition and result in short stature and weakness than their healthy peers
Bioevaluation of Spiro N-Propargylic β-Enaminones as Anti-Breast Cancer Agents: In Vitro and Molecular Docking Studies
The study aimed to investigate the in vitro inhibitory activities of spiro N-propargylic beta-enaminones, SPEs 1-31, against BCa cells, to perform in silico molecular docking studies to understand the nature of the interaction between the compounds and the ER alpha, PR, EGFR, and Her2, and to determine the ADMET and drug-likeness properties. Cytotoxic activity was investigated via MTT assay. DNA fragmentation was evaluated via ELISA assay. Cell cycle distributions were investigated by flow cytometry. Expression levels of Bcl-2, Bax, p21 and Cyclin D1 were measured by qRT-PCR and western blot analysis. Molecular docking was done using Autodock/vina software. ADMET analysis was calculated using the ADMETlab 2.0 tool. SPEs 1, 22, and 28 showed selective cytotoxic activity against all BCa cells with SI values >2. SPEs induced apoptosis and caused significant changes in Bcl-2 and Bax levels. The cell cycle was arrested at the S phase and levels of p21 and Cyclin D1 were induced in all BCa cells. Molecular docking analysis revealed that SPE1, SPE22, and SPE28 showed high binding affinities with ER alpha, PR, EGFR, and Her2. ADMET analysis revealed that SPEs are drug-like compounds as they obey the five rules of Lipinsky and are not toxic. Therefore, these potential anticancer compounds should be further validated by in vivo studies for their appropriate function in human health with a safety profile, and a comprehensive drug interaction study should be performed
