    Doppler sonographic assessment of posttraumatic reflex sympathetic dystrophy

    Objective. To reveal the arterial Doppler sonographic findings in cases of posttraumatic reflex sympathetic dystrophy. Methods. Eleven patients had hand reflex sympathetic dystrophy, and 9 had foot reflex sympathetic dystrophy. The duration of symptoms ranged from 1 to 28 weeks, and the history of fracture ranged from 6 to 48 weeks. Bilateral brachial or popliteal arteries proximal to injuries were evaluated by Doppler sonography with a 7.5-MHz linear transducer All patients also had triphasic bone scintigraphy and extremity thermography. Results. Two patients had monophasic waveforms and 4 had low-pulsatility triphasic waveforms on the affected limbs when compared with the asymptomatic limbs. All opposite asymptomatic limbs had normal triphasic waveforms in these 6 cases. Spectral analysis revealed a loss or decrease of a normal reversed flow component with a reduced pulsatility index on the affected limb. Fourteen other patients had symmetric triphasic waveforms. We observed that the patients who had stage 1 reflex sympathetic dystrophy and warm limbs with durations of symptoms of more than 2 weeks had positive Doppler sonographic findings, whereas all patients with stage 2 reflex sympathetic dystrophy and all with normal skin temperature, regardless of stage, had normal waveforms. Conclusions. Doppler sonography revealed loss of normal triphasic arterial waveforms in some of the cases of stage 1 disease, whereas many cases of stage 1 disease and all cases of stage 2 disease had normal findings. Therefore, we think that Doppler sonography cannot be used for the diagnosis of reflex sympathetic dystrophy but may help in assessing hemodynamic stages of the disease

    Lower Airway Inflammation in Nonasthmatic Allergic Rhinitis Patients

    Objective: Allergic rhinitis and asthma have been considered as a single airway disease sharing a common pathophysiological mechanism of airway inflammation. We aimed to investigate the lower airway inflammation in allergic rhinitis patients without asthma. Material and Methods: Forty patients who referred to our tertiary care hospital's otorhinolaryngology clinic and diagnosed as moderate/severe persistent allergic rhinitis according to ARIA criteria were included in the study. After evaluation for the eligibility for the study, a nasal smear was taken, and rhinomanometry was performed to measure the nasal obstruction on visit 1. Twenty-four hours later from the visit 1, pulmonary functions including bronchial hyperactivity (BHR) were measured on visit 2. Twenty-four hours later from the visit 2, sputum induction was performed, and cell distribution of the sputums was evaluated. Results: Mean age of the 17 male and 23 female patients was 37 +/- 11. Nasal smear eosinophilia was studied in 36 of the patients and found positive in 36%. Nasal obstruction was demonstrated in 68% of the patients by rhinomanometry. BHR was positive in 30% of the participants. There was not any statistical significant relationship between nasal eosinophilia and nasal obstruction severity, BHR and induced sputum eosinophilia (p> 0.05). Among the induced sputums which were of good quality to be evaluated, 7.5% had an eosinophil ratio of 2%. Any relationship between induced sputum eosinophil percentages and FEV1, FEV1/FVC, nasal obstruction severity was not observed (p> 0.05). However, BHR was found to be significantly related with FEV1/FVC ratio which was >70% through the whole study population (r= 0.392 p= 0.012). Condusion: We could not demonstrate the expected relationship between nasal and lower airway inflammation markers in our study group of allergic rhinitis patients. This may be due to the small number of study population and strict exclusion of asthmatic patients as well as particularly the difficulties in standardization of the induced sputum technique

    EFFECTS OF AN ADIABATIC FIN ON THE MIXED CONVECTION HEAT TRANSFER IN A SQUARE CAVITY WITH TWO VENTILATION PORTS

    In this study, a square cavity with two ventilation ports in the presence of an adiabatic fin of different lengths placed on the walls of the cavity is numerically analyzed for the mixed convection case for a range of Richardson numbers (Ri = 0.1, 1, 10, 100) and at Reynolds number of 300. The effect of the fin height, placement of the fin on each of the four walls of the cavity and Richardson number on the heat transfer and fluid flow characteristics is numerically analyzed. The results are presented in terms of streamlines, isotherm plots, and averaged Nusselt number plots. It is observed that for the convection dominated case, fin length and its position on the one of the four walls of the cavity do not alter the the performance whereas when the buoyancy effects become important thermal performance increases for high fin length

    Recent Developments in Enzyme, DNA and Immuno-Based Biosensors

    Novel sensitive, rapid and economical biosensors are being developed in a wide range of medical environmental and food applications. In this paper, we review some of the main advances in the field over the past few years by discussing recent studies from literature. A biosensor, which is defined as an analytical device consisting of a biomolecule, a transducer and an output system, can be categorized according to the type of the incorporated biomolecule. The biomolecules can be enzymes, antibodies, ssDNA, organelles, cells etc. The main biosensor categories classified according to the biomolecules are enzymatic biosensors, immunosensors and DNA-based biosensors. These sensors can measure analytes produced or reduced during reactions at lower costs compared to the conventional detection techniques. Numerous types of biosensor studies conducted over the last decade have been explored here to reveal their key applications in medical, environmental and food industries which provide comprehensive perspective to the readers. Overviews of the working principles and applications of the reviewed sensors are also summarized

    Rhamnolipid production from olive oil mill effluent (OOME) using the rotating biodisc reactor

    This paper presents a new process for rhamnolipid production from olive oil mill effluent (OOME) by a bacterial strain Pseudomonas sp. A01 isolated from olive oil mill contaminated soil. A biodisc reactor traditionally exploited for waste treatment was used for the production of rhamnolipid. The employed medium contained 10% OOME plus NaNO(3). After optimal physiological conditions were reached using batch culture techniques, they were applied for biodisc reactor. The yield and rhamnolipid production determined at 72 hours of incubation in the biodisc reactor were 0.69 x 10(-9) g/total cell and 0.115 g/L, respectively

    The effect of WhatsApp-based training on nurses' genetic knowledge levels and awareness in Turkey: A quasi-experimental study

    Background: Genetics plays an important role in healthcare, and it is crucial for nurses to have a good understanding of this field. However, studies have shown that nurses often lack genetic knowledge and awareness. Furthermore, innovative educational approaches, such as WhatsApp-based education, have been proposed to address this knowledge gap, unlike traditional educational methods. These approaches use technology and interactive platforms to engage nurses in dynamic and immersive learning experiences. Aim: This study aimed to examine the impact of WhatsApp-based training on nurses' genetic knowledge levels and awareness. Method: A quasi-experimental pre-test-post-test design was used. A total of 121 registered nurses participated in a WhatsApp-based training program comprising presentations on genetic issues. Data were collected using Genetics and Genomics in Nursing Practice Survey. Values, means, percentage frequency distributions, and paired- sample t-tests were used. Results: In the pre-training period, the mean knowledge score of the nurse group was found to be 3.31 +/- 1.30 in the pre-training period and 9.58 +/- 1.73 in the post-training period. The applied WhatsApp-based training was found to have an effect size of 0.752 on the GGNPS (Genetics and Genomics in Nursing Practice Survey) knowledge score of the sample group (F = 374.882, p = 0.000). In the post-training period, there were significant increases in all the GGNPS items. Conclusion: WhatsApp-based educational programs have the potential to improve nurses' genetic knowledge and awareness. To fulfill the expanding needs of the nursing profession and to enhance patient care outcomes, this study emphasizes the importance of incorporating innovative educational tools into nursing education

    The structural and nonlinear optical properties of the Schiff base material, (E)-4-fluoro-N '-(pyridin-2-ylmethylene)benzohydrazide monohydrate (FPMBH) were studied. The experimental investigations were performed using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), ultraviolet (UV) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectral techniques. The computational analyses were made by DFT method. A comparison between experimental and theoretical predictions was made and interpreted. The maximum absorption wavelength was found by both experimental and theoretical analyses. The Hirshfeld surface analysis was performed to understand the various molecular interactions. Highest occupied and lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals (HOMO-LUMO) analysis was performed for the title molecule to know about the possible charge transfer taking place within the molecule. Reactivity features were also determined by molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) analysis. The third-order nonlinear optical studies were done by z-scan experiment, and the results were discussed

    Tribological and mechanical properties of Al alloyed bearings

    Aluminum based alloys are widely used as journal bearing materials in tribological applications. Duralumines, AlMgSi are widely used as journal bearing materials for aluminum based alloys. These alloys provide properties expected from journal bearings. In this study, tribological and mechanical properties of these journal bearings manufactured from aluminum alloys were investigated. SAE 1050 steel shaft was used as counter abrader. Experiments were carried out in every 30 min for the total of 150 min by using radial journal bearing wear test rig. Wear resistance of AI alloyed bearings increased about 2-3 times and journal wear resistance increased about 2-8 times. The highest bearing wear rate occurred in pure AI bearings while the lowest bearing wear rate occurred in AlMgsi bearing. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

    Correlation between work impairment, scores of rhinitis severity and asthma using the MASK-air® App

    Background In allergic rhinitis, a relevant outcome providing information on the effectiveness of interventions is needed. In MASK-air (Mobile Airways Sentinel Network), a visual analogue scale (VAS) for work is used as a relevant outcome. This study aimed to assess the performance of the work VAS work by comparing VAS work with other VAS measurements and symptom-medication scores obtained concurrently. Methods All consecutive MASK-air users in 23 countries from 1 June 2016 to 31 October 2018 were included (14 189 users; 205 904 days). Geolocalized users self-assessed daily symptom control using the touchscreen functionality on their smart phone to click on VAS scores (ranging from 0 to 100) for overall symptoms (global), nose, eyes, asthma and work. Two symptom-medication scores were used: the modified EAACI CSMS score and the MASK control score for rhinitis. To assess data quality, the intra-individual response variability (IRV) index was calculated. Results A strong correlation was observed between VAS work and other VAS. The highest levels for correlation with VAS work and variance explained in VAS work were found with VAS global, followed by VAS nose, eye and asthma. In comparison with VAS global, the mCSMS and MASK control score showed a lower correlation with VAS work. Results are unlikely to be explained by a low quality of data arising from repeated VAS measures. Conclusions VAS work correlates with other outcomes (VAS global, nose, eye and asthma) but less well with a symptom-medication score. VAS work should be considered as a potentially useful AR outcome in intervention studies
