THE PERFORMANCES OF SOME NEW DENT MAIZE (Zea mays L.) CULTIVARS GROWN AS MAIN CROP IN A MEDITERRANEAN ENVIRONMENT
The experiment was conducted in the experimental fields of at Alasehir district of Manisa province in western Turkey in 2016 and 2017, aiming to determine the adaptability of new maize cultivars for grain production as main crop under Mediterranean ecological conditions. Kayras, Kalends, Kebeos, Keidas, Inove, Performer, Hydro, Pioneer 2088, Pioneer-31-D-24, Pioneer 2105, LG 30600, LG Indaco, LG 30692, BC 678, C-955 and Valbom were tested. Significant differences were detected among the varieties in terms of plant height, first ear height, number of leaves per plant, stem diameter, ear length, ear diameter, number of kernels per ear, 1000 kernel weight, grain yield and crude protein traits. The average value of plant height of maize cultivars varied between 216.03 and 262.45 cm and first ear height 82.70 and 105.48 cm; number of leaves per plant 11.50 and 14.65; stem diameter between 19.0 and 24.1 mm; ear length between 19.33 and 23.06 cm; ear diameter 38.0 to 52.4 mm; number of kernels per ear 314.05 and 563.11; 1000 kernel weight 295.06 and 406.03 g; grain yield 9020.6 kg ha(-1) and 12243.0 kg ha(-1) and crude protein content between 8.72 and 14.24 %. In conclusion, cv. Pioneer-2105 and cv. Performer were found to be superior to other cultivars for yield and 1000 kernel weight traits
An accurate and novel numerical simulation with convergence analysis for nonlinear partial differential equations of Burgers-Fisher type arising in applied sciences
In this study, the second-order nonlinear partial differential equations of Burgers-Fisher type are considered under a unique formulation by introducing a novel highly accurate numerical method based on the Norlund rational polynomial and matrix-collocation computational system. The method aims to obtain a sustainable approach since it contains the rational structure of the Norlund polynomial. A unique computer program module, which involves very few routines, is constructed to discuss the precision and efficiency of the method and these few steps are described via an algorithm. A residual function is employed in both the error and convergence analyses with mean value theorem for double integrals. The considered equations in the numerical tests stand for model phenomena arising widely in applied sciences. Graphical and numerical comparisons provide a clear observation about the consistency of the method. All results prove that the method is highly accurate, eligible, and provides the ultimate operation for aforementioned problems
Current Practice in Diagnosis and Treatment of Growth Hormone Deficiency in Childhood: A Survey from Turkey
Objective: Approaches to diagnosis and treatment of growth hormone deficiency (GHD) in children vary among countries and even among centers in the same country. This survey, aiming to facilitate the process of preparing the new consensus on GHD by the Turkish Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes Society, was designed to evaluate the current practices in diagnosis and treatment of GHD in different centers in Turkey. Methods: A questionnaire covering relevant items for diagnosis and treatment of GHD was sent out to all pediatric endocrinology centers. Results: Twenty-four centers returned the questionnaire. The most frequently used GH stimulation test was L-dopa, followed by clonidine. Eighteen centers used a GH cut-off value of 10 ng/mL for the diagnosis of GHD; this value was 7 ng/mL in 4 centers and 5 ng/mL in 2 centers. The most frequently used assay was immunochemiluminescence for determination of GH, insulin-like growth factor-1 and insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 concentrations. Sex steroid priming in both sexes was used by 19 centers. The most frequently used starting dose of recombinant human GH (rhGH) in prepubertal children was 0.025-0.030 mg/kg/day and 0.030-0.035 mg/kg/day in pubertal children. Growth velocity was used in the evaluation for growth response to rhGH therapy in all centers. Anthropometric measurements of patients every 3-6 months, fasting blood glucose, bone age and thyroid panel evaluation were used by all centers at follow-up. Main indications for cessation of therapy were decreased height velocity and advanced bone age. Fourteen centers used combined treatment (rhGH and gonadotropin-releasing analogues) to increase final height. Conclusion: Although conformity was found among centers in Turkey in current practice, it is very important to update guideline statements and to modify, if needed, the approach to GHD over time in accordance with new evidence-based clinical studies
Measurements of Indirect CP Asymmetries in D0 → K-K+ and D0 → π-π+ Decays
A study of indirect CP violation in D-0 mesons through the determination of the parameter A(Gamma) is presented using a data sample of pp collisions, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb(-1), collected with the LHCb detector and recorded at the center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV at the LHC. The parameter A(Gamma) is the asymmetry of the effective lifetimes measured in decays of D-0 and (D) over bar (0) mesons to the CP eigenstates K-K+ and pi(-)pi(+). Fits to the data sample yield A(Gamma)(KK) = (-0.35 +/- 0.62 +/- 0.12) x 10(-3) and A(Gamma)(pi pi) = (0.33 +/- 1.06 +/- 0.14) x 10(-3), where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. The results represent the world's best measurements of these quantities. They show no difference in A(Gamma) between the two final states and no indication of CP violation
In Vitro Effects of Culture Medium and Serum on Germ Cells in Testis and Epididymis of Male Wistar Rats
The present study was designed to examine the influence of culture media and serum on survival of in vitro rat sperms. The effects of different culture media with or without 10% fetal bovine serum (FBS) on spermatids and spermiums of Wistar rats were assessed in vitro between 2004 and 2005. Spermatozoa were cultured in Gamete-20, RPMI-1640, alphaMEM (AMEM), Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium (DMEM) and Eagle's MEM (MEM). The number and morphology of cells was recorded at 4 and 24 h. Under all conditions the number and the viability of the cells decreased with time but parameters were positively affected by the presence of FBS. Viability rates of spermatids and spermatozoa reduced at 24 h of culturing. The survival and morphology were the best in RPMI with serum and worst in MEM without serum. These results indicate that different composition of culture media and FBS are important for maturation and survival of spermatozoa. Carefully selected culture media can play important roles in the generation of functional sperms as well as in the success of in-vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures
EXPERIMENTAL ASSESSMENT AND TOPSIS OPTIMIZATION OF CUTTING FORCE, SURFACE ROUGHNESS, AND SOUND INTENSITY IN HARD TURNING OF AISI 52100 STEEL
In this work, initially, the raw AISI 52100 bearing steel was heat-treated to obtain 40 HRC and 45 HRC workpiece hardness. Further, dry hard turning tests were carried out to study the impact of workpiece hardness (H), cutting speed (v), feed (f), and depth of cut (a) on cutting force (Fy), surface roughness (Ra), and sound intensity (SI). An economically viable PVD-coated carbide turning tool was implemented for the experiments. The Taguchi L-18 (2-3 mixed level) design of experiments was employed to establish the experimental plan in order to save the experimental time, energy, and cost of manufacturing. The results disclosed that the feed has the prevailing consequence on surface roughness with a 96.3% contribution, while it also significantly affects the cutting force with a contribution of 13.8%. The contribution of cutting speed and workpiece hardness on the cutting force was reported as 48.3% and 35.1%, respectively. Higher workpiece hardness required more energy for plastic deformation as a result the cutting force increases with leading hardness. The sound intensity was dominantly influenced by depth of cut (53.3%) and cutting speed (40%). Finally, the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) was performed to determine the optimum machining parameters. According to the TOPSIS, the optimum level of cutting parameters was predicted as 40 HRC hardness (H), 150 m/min cutting speed (V), 0.15 mm/rev feed (f), and 0.1 mm depth of cut (a) while the optimal result of Fy, SI, and Ra were noted as 27.66 N, 70.7dB, and 0.86 mu m individually
Genetic Relationships Among Some Hawthorn (Crataegus spp.) Species and Genotypes
The genus Crataegus is well distributed in Turkey as a wild plant, with numerous, inherently variable species and genotypes. RAPD markers were used to study 17 hawthorn genotypes belonging to Crataegus monogyna ssp. monogyna Jacq (2 genotypes), C. monogyna ssp. azarella Jacq (1), Crataegus pontica K.Koch (3), Crataegus orientalis var. orientalis Pallas Ex Bieb (3), Crataegus pseudoheterophylla Pojark (1), Crataegus aronia var. dentata Browicz (1), C. aronia var. aronia Browicz (4), and Crateagus x bornmuelleri Zabel (2). The 10 RAPD primers produced 72 polymorphic bands (88% polymorphism). A dendrogram based on Jaccard's index included four major groups and one outgroup according to taxa. The lowest genetic variability was observed within C. aronia var. aronia genotypes. The study demonstrated that RAPD analysis is efficient for genotyping wild-grown hawthorns
Osteoporosis in women with breast cancer and its effect on quality of life: a pilot study
Purpose: The primary aim of this study, was to evaluate the risk of osteoporosis (OP) in patients who had received adjuvant chemotherapy for breast cancer The secondary aim was to investigate the effect of OP on the quality of life of these patients. Patients and methods: Twenty-six patients with breast cancer and 21 health); controls were recruited into the study All breast cancer patients were treated with 6 cycles of adjuvant chemotherapy. Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured by Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Short Form-36 (SF-36) questionnaire was used to assess the quality of life. Results: The mean lumbar area BMD value significantly lower inpatients with breast cancer than in healthy controls (p=0.017). There were no significant differences in the femoral area BMD measurements between the groups. OP was more pronounced after 24 months of the last chemotherapy course than in the first 12 months (p=0.04). The most affected domain of the SF-36 in patients with breast cancer was the physical role. Conclusion: Adjuvant chemotherapy increases the risk of accelerated bone loss in the lumbar spine. OP should be investigated during follow-up in order to improve the quality of life of the surviving breast cancer patients
Numerical modelling of floating structure with coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian technique
Floating structures are complex systems composed of superstructure, floating-mooring components, and anchors. In this study, the behaviours of a pontoon, which is used as a floating structure, and four mooring elements under different wave loading conditions were investigated. A numerical analysis of the coupled motions of the pontoon, mooring lines, and marine environment was performed. While the mooring lines were modelled as wire elements, the pontoon was modelled as a rigid body with six degrees of freedom. Wave loading conditions were represented using two different wave spectra. The first spectrum (Case I) was generated based on a single sinusoidal wave utilising the JONSWAP spectrum, whereas the second one (Case II) was generated based a superimposed multi-sinusoidal wave. Time-varying motions of the pontoon and tensions of the mooring lines were determined based on the numerical analyses for Cases I and II. Critical values were determined using the results of both cases. The numerical solutions were based on bidirectional fluid-structure interaction (FSI) analysis. A fully non-linear free surface simulation was performed using the coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian (CEL) technique. Furthermore, numerical results were compared with the results obtained from analytical solutions of free surface elevations
The piezoelectric properties of three-phase electrospun PVDF/PZT/ Multiwalled Carbone Nanotube composites for energy harvesting applications
In this study, the piezoelectric nanogenerators (PENs) based on the PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride)/PZT (lead zirconate titanate, the particle size of <1 m) incorporated with MWCNT (Multiwalled Carbone Nanotube, Outer diameter: 10 nm, Inner diameter: 4.5 nm, and Length: 3-6 mu m) were produced using the electrospinning method. An 8- phase content of 96.56 % in PVDF electrospun composites was arrived at due to the synergistic effect of the PZT ceramics and the MWCNT nanoparticles. The experimental results showed that a PVDF/PZT/0.7 wt% MWCNT composite with a thickness of 145 mu m based on the PEN had an electrical power efficiency (0.16 mu W) approximately 1.3 times higher at a vibrational frequency of 20 Hz under a resistive load of 46 K Omega as compared to that of the PEN based on the PVDF/PZT composite (0.12 mu W). The PVDF/PZT/MWCNT-based PENs have promising potential for flexible energy transmission and structural health monitoring
