A NOVEL APPROACH FOR DROUGHT CHARACTERIZATION BASED ON PERFORMANCE-ORIENTED SPI: AN ILLUSTRATIVE CASE OF SOUTHEASTERN ANATOLIA REGION, TURKEY
Drought is a main water-related natural hazard due to its features, sensitivities and effects to all sectors. According to climate change scenarios, drought hazards are expected to be more devastating, especially in arid and semi-arid regions. Drought characterization is essential to be aware of expected negative effects of droughts as well as to devise water management plans including possible mitigation measures. To this end, many drought indices have been developed for drought analysis, one of which is the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) that is widely used worldwide. In this study, a new drought index is proposed, namely the Drought Power Index (DPI), based on the SPI with orientation by reliability-resilience-vulnerability (RRV) concept. The use of the RRV approach with the SPI time series empowers the drought characterization by considering the frequency of drought event, drought recovery period as well as the severity of droughts-once a drought has occurred. Since the drought is identified as an unfavorable phenomenon, the DPI ranges from 0 to 1 where the higher values indicate higher drought devastating features (probability, duration and extremity of drought) and vice versa. The proposed approach is illustrated with reference to the Southeastern Anatolia Region, Turkey. The long-term (1970-2017) monthly precipitation data of eight meteorological stations under the operation of General Directorate of Meteorological Services of Ministry of Forestry and Water Affairs are used in the study. The 12-month SPI time series, which were later used for calculations of DPI, were obtained by the use of SPI_SL_6 software. The study revealed that there has been an increasing trend in DPI values in the basin, especially after 1993. It is concluded that the DPI is a valuable indicator for (i) spatially and temporally evaluating the drought characteristics, (ii) analysing meteorological, agricultural and hydrological drought severity with its coherent capability with SPI, (iii) ranking the regions in accordance with the drought vulnerability conditions
Primary cutaneous anaplastic CD30+ large-cell lymphoma that completely regressed after incisional skin biopsy
We describe a 48-year-old woman with three erythematous nodules localized on the left forearm, with 2 months evolution. Histological and immunohistochemical examination revealed a CD30(+) large-cell lymphoma. Systemic involvement was not detected. The tumor regressed spontaneously within a week, after the incisional skin biopsy. In control skin biopsy, there was not any histological feature of lymphoma. No reactivation or any symptom of systemic disease was observed during the 10-month follow-up period
Arare parasitic infection: visceral leishmaniasis case after gastric cancer treatment
We present acase of Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) in apatient with gastric cancer treated with chemoradiotherapy. A69-year-old man with gastric carcinoma had been treated with total gastrectomy, lymphadenectomy and postoperative radiotherapy with chemotherapy. Then 3years after treatment, due to pancytopenia with progressive trombocytopenia and splenomegaly, bone marrow examination was performed and Leishmania spp. amastigotes were diagnosed. When antibiotherapy was completed, splenomegaly was eliminated and the laboratory results became normal. VL should be kept in mind in the differential diagnosis of patients, even adults, with splenomegaly, trombocytopenia and ahistory of contact with dogs in endemic countries such as Turkey
Comparison of postoperative anterior segment changes associated with pars plana vitrectomy with and without vitreous base shaving
AIM: To compare changes in anterior segment topography and axial length (AL) evaluated with Pentacam and IOL Master after pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) performed with and without vitreous base shaving. METHODS: This prospective study included patients who underwent PPV or phacoemulsification+PPV (Phaco+PPV) for various indications. Patients who underwent total posterior hyaloid detachment and excessive vitreous base shaving with scleral indentation were referred to as complete PPV (c-PPV). The patients whom posterior hyaloid was separated as far as the posterior arcades and vitreous base shaving with scleral depression was not performed were classified as the partial PPV (p-PPV) group. All patients underwent detailed ophthalmologic examinations preoperatively and 1wk, 1, and 3mo postoperatively. Changes in the anterior chamber depth (ACD), anterior chamber volume (ACV), iridocorneal angle (ICA), central corneal thickness (CCT), and keratometric measurements (K-1 and K-2) were evaluated with Pentacam HR. Changes in the AL measurements were analyzed with IOL Master. RESULTS: A significant increase in ACD was observed in c-PPV cases (P=0.02), but this increase was not significant in the p-PPV group (P=0.053). In contrast, ICA increased significantly in the c-PPV group (P=0.02) but decreased in the p-PPV group (P=0.09). BCVA was significantly improved in the c-PPV group from week 1 (P0.05 for all). CONCLUSION: Incomplete posterior hyaloid excision and not removing the vitreous base in PPV surgeries may create a more stable anterior chamber, thus preventing the downward movement of the lens-iris diaphragm, and may cause ciliary body retraction, thereby reducing ICA. Awareness of these effects can provide some amount of guidance to physicians in selecting the appropriate PPV procedure and preempting surgical complications
Serological levels of zinc, copper and iron elements among Giardia lamblia infected children in Turkey
Background : Giardiasis, an intestinal protozoan infection caused by Giardia lamblia , is common in Turkey, especially among children aged between 2- and 14-years-old. Effects of giardiasis on serological levels of zinc, copper and iron elements were assessed in this study. Methods : A total of 45 children, aged between 2- and 14-years-old, who were admitted to the Pediatrics Department of Celal Bayar University Medical School with gastrointestinal complaints and diagnosed as having giardiasis by stool examinations in the Parasitology Department, were enrolled as the study group (SG). The control group (CG) consisted of 45 age-matched healthy children. Serological levels of zinc, copper and iron were measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometer in all samples. Results : As a result of the study, serum zinc levels were 67.43 +/- 17.72 mug/dL and 145.20 +/- 9.13 mug/dL, copper levels were 198.45 +/- 39.14 mug/dL and 150 +/- 21.14 mug/dL and iron levels were 87.98 +/- 18.31 mug/dL and 160.45 +/- 45.40 mug/dL, in SG and CG, respectively. When compared separately as SG and CG, there was a statistically significant difference between the serological levels of all these elements. Conclusion : These results revealed that giardiasis increased the serological levels of copper, like other infectious agents. However, zinc and iron levels decreased during giardiasis due to malabsorption
Factors directing individuals to computer games in the process of evaluating recreational activities
This study aims to examine the motivational factors that direct individuals to computer games in the process of evaluating leisure activities. The study is designed in descriptive and relational survey models, which are among the quantitative research patterns. A total of 1677 individuals participated in the study. A personal information form and the Computer Gaming Motivation Scale were used. An independent sample t-test, one-way analysis of variance, and Pearson correlation test were used to analyze the data. According to the results, there were significant differences in the concentration, entertainment, escape, learning, and socialization sub-dimensions of the participants in favor of the groups playing in Internet cafes. The findings indicate that when more time is spent with information and communication technologies, there is a decrease in concentration and an increase in entertainment and escape. Furthermore, when the relationship between the sub-dimensions of the scale was examined, positively moderate and high correlations were found among concentration, entertainment, escape, learning, and socialization. As a result, rapid technological changes and developments provide many opportunities for individuals. It is thought that individuals' busy work lives and monotonous daily routines cause them to prefer easily accessible activities during their leisure time
Modeling and performance assessment of a combined geothermal-ejector refrigeration system
This study investigates the integration of an innovative combined power and cooling (CPC) system into the existing infrastructure of the DORA 1 geothermal power plant in Ayd & imath;n, Turkey. Using real operational data, this research models the integration of an ejector refrigeration cycle to enhance both power generation and cooling capabilities. The proposed system utilizes waste heat from the geothermal power plant's re-injection wells, which operate at temperatures of 81.7 degrees C and 69.1 degrees C. Four environmentally friendly refrigerants (R290, R717, R600 and R1234ze) were evaluated for their performance in the refrigeration cycle. Of these, R717 and R1234ze showed superior performance, achieving the highest coefficients of performance (COPs) and exergy efficiencies. The integration of the ejector refrigeration cycle resulted in a 12 % improvement in overall energy efficiency compared to traditional power-only systems, with a maximum COP of 0.72 under optimal conditions. This study fills a significant research gap by providing a practical application of combined geothermal power and refrigeration, and provides valuable insights into the feasibility, efficiency and sustainability of such systems. The results suggest that the proposed system not only improves energy utilization, but also contributes to environmental sustainability by reducing reliance on conventional cooling methods. This research has the potential to guide future developments in the field of geothermal energy and refrigeration, promoting the adoption of integrated energy systems for improved efficiency and reduced environmental impact
EFFECTS OF SMALL-SIDED GAMES AND CONVENTIONAL AEROBIC INTERVAL TRAINING ON VARIOUS PHYSIOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS AND DEFENSIVE AND OFFENSIVE SKILLS USED IN SOCCER
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of small-sided game training (SSGT) versus conventional aerobic interval training (CAIT) on soccer-specific endurance performance, lactate threshold levels (mmol.L-1), short-passing ability and defensive and offensive skills of a soccer match. Before and after a 6-week training intervention period, eighteen amateur soccer players (age 21.8 +/- 4.8 years) were tested. The tests included the anaerobic threshold (AnT) test, the Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test Level 1 (Yo-Yo IR1), and the Loughborough Soccer Passing Test (LSPT). A manual notational match analysis system was utilized to evaluate the defensive and offensive skills of players during the matches. Both the SSGT and CAIT were performed two days a week and consisted of five sets of 6-minute periods of work at the individualized exercise intensity corresponding to the individual anaerobic threshold, with 3-minute recovery periods between sets. Mann-Whitney U and Wilcoxon signed rank tests were used to examine the between- and within-group differences, respectively. Statistical analyses revealed that the SSGT group players exhibited significantly better in terms of the LSPT scores (p.05). The results of the study suggested that SSGT improved short-passing ability, various soccer skills and physiological parameters, while CAIT only improved physiological parameters. SSGT improves soccer-specific endurance and technical ability of players at the same time, meaning it is a time efficient way of training
Evaluation of scale-up parameters of bioethanol production from Escherichia coli KO11
Objective: In recent years, increased attention has been devoted to the conversion of biomass into fuel ethanol, as one of the cleanest liquid fuel alternatives to fossil fuels. However, industrial production of bioethanol is related with successful scaling-up studies. Methods: In this study, the experimental designs of scale-up procedures based on constant mixing time, impeller tip speed and oxygen mass transfer coefficient were performed in 8 L stirred tank reactor and were compared in terms of product yield and productivity with those obtained from 2 L stirred tank reactor using quince pomace as a substrate for bioethanol production by Escherichia coli KO11. Results: Scale-up based on constant mixing time yielded a maximum ethanol concentration of 23.42 g/L which corresponded to 0.4 g ethanol/ g reduced sugar in 8 L stirred tank reactor. Moreover, shear stress increased only 1.1 fold which resulted in low cell damage and high cell viability. Conclusion: Constant mixing time was identified as the most important key parameter especially for scaling-up of viscous fermentation broths of bioethanol production due to the significance of the homogeneity
Enhancement of docetaxel-induced cytotoxicity and apoptosis by all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) through downregulation of survivin (BIRC5), MCL-1 and LTbeta-R in hormone- and drug resistant prostate cancer cell line, DU-145
Background: The management of hormone-refractory prostate cancer (HRPC) still remains as an important challenge of daily oncology practice. Docetaxel has proved to be a first line treatment choice. All-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) could potently inhibit the growth of prostate cancer cells in vitro and its combination with various anticancer agents results in increased cytotoxicity. Based on these data, our aim was to examine the synergistic/additive cytotoxic and apoptotic effects of combination of docetaxel and ATRA, in hormone- and drug refractory human DU-145 prostate cancer cells. Furthermore, we have searched for the underlying mechanisms of apoptosis by demonstrating apoptosis-related genes. Methods: XTT cell proliferation assay was used for showing cytotoxicity. For verifying apoptosis, both DNA Fragmentation by ELISA assay and caspase 3/7 activity measurement were used. For detecting the mechanism of apoptosis induced by docetaxel-ATRA combination, OligoGeArray (R) which consists of 112 apoptosis related genes was used. Results: Our results revealed that docetaxel and ATRA were synergistically cytotoxic and apoptotic in DU-145 cells, in a dose- and time dependent manner. It was also shown by our studies that apoptosis was induced in DU-145 prostate carcinoma cells with significant cytotoxicity, no matter which agent applied first. We have found out that docetaxel-ATRA combination significantly downregulates survivin (BIRC5), myeloid cell leukemia-1 (MCL-1) and lymphotoxin beta-receptor (LT beta R) genes, which all three have pivotal roles in regulation of apoptosis and cell cycle progression. Conclusion: In conclusion, we strongly suggest that docetaxel and ATRA combination is a good candidate for this challenging era of daily oncologic practice. Also, the combination of docetaxel and ATRA might allow a reduction in docetaxel doses and by this way may diminish docetaxel adverse effects while maintaining the therapeutic effect in patients with HRPC
