Coordination Meeting for Project Implementation in Bangka Belitung: Meeting with local government, expert and fishing community in Bangka Belitung

There were 26 participants in total. The objectives of the meeting are to (1) coordinate with Fisheries Agency of Bangka Belitung regarding the implementation of the SEAFDEC/UNEP//GEF Fisheries Refugia Project; (2) to obtaining information regarding policy and regulation that have been implemented by the local government in fisheries management especially for squid as a basis information for establishing fisheries refugia; (3) to obtaining information regarding important habitats such as mangroves, coral reefs and seagrasses that have been protected for the purpose of sustainability of fish resources.UNEP/GE
USAID Oceans Workshop Report on the Implementation of an EAFM Plan for the Sulu-Sulawesi Seascape
No full textThe Regional Plan of Action of the Coral Triangle Initiative on Coral Reefs, Fisheries, and Food Security (CTI-CFF) sets forth five long-term goals for regional action taken by the six Coral Triangle Initiative (CTI) Member Countries. One of these goals is the application of ecosystem approach to fisheries management (EAFM). This goal is supported by priority regional actions identified and coordinated by the CTI-CFF EAFM Technical Working Group (TWG). One of these priority regional actions is “Improve enforcement of IUU fishing through greater collaboration.”
USAID Oceans and Conservation International Philippines formalized a partnership in 2019 to facilitate the implementation of a sub-regional EAFM plan for the Sulu-Sulawesi Seascape, inclusive of priority actions are to combat IUU fishing, promote sustainable fisheries, and conserve marine biodiversity. In coordination with the CTI-CFF Regional Secretariat and participation from CTI member country representatives from both the EAFM and Seascapes TWGs, during March 2020 Conservation International led a workshop to formally initiate the implementation of the Sulu-Sulawesi Seascape Sub-Regional EAFM Plan, and establish a sub-regional governance mechanism between relevant government agencies of Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines to oversee direct the sub-regional plan’s implementation. The 2-day workshop was attended by 31 participants, 11 of which joined remotely (online). This report presents a summary of the workshop’s agenda, sessions, outputs, and presentations from the event, and serves as documentation of the sub-regional EAFM plan’s implementation as endorsed and supported by the CTI-CFF Member Countries, Regional Secretariat, and implementing partners
Study Report on Area Context and Socio-Economic Conditions of Coastal Communities in Suratthani Province: Fisheries Refugia Management for Short Mackerel in Suratthani Site
No full textThis report is under the SEAFDEC/UNEP/GEF Project on “Establishment and Operation of a Regional System of Fisheries Refugia in the South China Sea and Gulf of Thailand”Study on the area context and socio-economic conditions of coastal communities in Surat Thani Province aimed at preparing the database for evaluation of Fisheries Refugia Project, the concept of which is promoting good governance for sustainable fisheries management based on ecosystem approach with its goal at creating human security in fishery sector in linkage with the Sustainable Development Goals – SDGs Goal 1, 2, 5, and 14. The study was conducted by collecting secondary data from related study reports and documents, as well as in-depth interviews with both male and female fishers. Focus group meetings among fishers of different fishing gears and different economic status were also conducted in the fishing communities that depend on blue swimming crab fisheries which were involved in 7 coastal districts of Surat Thani Province. The study found that Ban Don Bay is a suitable habitat for blue swimming crab due to its conditions. Moreover, the study found that gill nets and traps for blue swimming crab are the most dominant small-scale fishing gears in Ban Don Bay. In terms of economic aspects, the average incomes and expenses of small-scale blue swimming crab fishing households are higher than those of the general small-scale fishing households in the Bay. However, fishing pressure has resulted in the decrease of the size at first maturity of blue swimming crab in the area.UNEP/GE

USAID Oceans Indonesia Closeout Activities Report
No full textIn support of the conclusion of country and learning site activities under the USAID Oceans and Fisheries Partnership (USAID Oceans), two Indonesia-based project closeout activities were completed during November 2019 and February 2020: (1) a Partnership Transition Workshop conducted in Bitung and Manado on 25-26 November 2019; and (2) a National Lessons Learned Showcase conducted in Jakarta on 19 February 2020. At both events, major Indonesia partners under the USAID Oceans project participated, including: Indonesia Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Northern Sulawesi Provincial Government, City of Bitung Government, seafood and technology private sector partners, Community Groups and NGOs from Bitung and Manado, and academia. This report summarizes the sessions and outputs from both project closeout events conducted with partners in the Indonesia
Report of the Forth Project Steering Committee Ad-hoc Meeting

The meeting was attended by 23 participants, including the Project National Focal Point, the National Scientific and Technical Focal Point from 6 participating member countries: namely Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, and Viet Nam; the project task manager from UNEP; representatives from SEAFDEC Training Department and Secretariat; and the Project Coordination Unit staffs. The meeting aimed to finalize with the Project Steering Committee on the 2 years project extension with no extra cost from the donor and endorsed the proposed revision of the Budget and Costed Workplan from 6 participating countries and Regional Programs.UNEP/GE
