Get PDFGender equity and equality are fundamental guiding principles in FAO’s Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication (SSF Guidelines), ideals which are also closely aligned with the overarching objectives and approach in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Women comprise almost half of the workforce in small-scale fisheries; however, their contribution to food security, income generation and community resilience is under-valued. To redress this deficit, gender perspectives need to be mainstreamed into fisheries and aquaculture programmes and policies at the local, national, and international level

DOF proposed the refugia site be gazetted as a Protected Area to conserve and sustainably manage the tiger prawn (Penaeus monodon). The site boundaries demarking was proposed by the researchers supported by their findings. The proposed refugia site has an area of 852km2. Thus, the consultation targeted the traditional fishermen from Zone A and Zone B as well commercial fishermen from Zone C7UNEP/GE
Site Base Management Board Meeting in Kep Province

There was a total of 25 participants from the member of provincial management committee (PMC) of marine fisheries management area including blue swimming crab at Koh Po and Koh Tonsay Archipelago, Kep province. This meeting was important as the New Provincial Governor was introduced to the meetings. Also, this meeting focused on an action plan for deploying concrete boxes at the boundary of blue swimming crab refugia at Koh Po, dissemination of closed season of blue swimming crab at the refugia sites at Koh Po, and the introduction of a new project of Blue Action Fund.UNEP/GE

The aim of this meeting is to gather information and input from local governments, academics from university and other relevant institutions in West Kalimantan regarding the condition of shrimp fisheries, threats of shrimp stocks and their critical habitats, conservation areas that have been established in West Kalimantan and zoning plans for coastal areas in West Kalimantan. In light of this, many information has been provided and Ketapang has been identified as nursery area for white shrimp.UNEP/GE

In particular, the DFC/FiA also deployed concrete boxes into refugia sites. Also, other businesses have been done with SEAFDEC/PCU related to the process of the implementation of the fisheries refugia in the region level. On the other hand, there were some challenges regarding the Covid 19 situation and the change of new provincial governor. This could affect the project implementation.UNEP/GE
