Smartphone usage habits among french nursing students: A monocentric mixed-methods study
International audienceSmartphones, first introduced in 1992 in the United States, have evolved into essential communication tools due to their convenience and increasing functionalities. Their widespread use has significantly impacted daily life, leading to various psychological and physical consequences, particularly among young adults. In France, Interministerial Mission to Combat Drugs and Addictive Behavior (MILDECA) reports a high prevalence of intensive smartphone usage among individuals aged 15-24, with many acknowledging their inability to control their screen time. This trend is particularly concerning among nursing students, where excessive smartphone use has been linked to issues such as stress, anxiety, and diminished academic performance. Despite the benefits of smartphones in accessing educational resources, problematic usage remains a growing concern. This study aimed to describe nursing students' smartphone usage habits, assess addiction and ocular discomfort, and evaluate their knowledge of risks and preventive measures to inform targeted prevention strategies. Method: A cross-sectional, monocentric mixed-methods study was conducted with 50 first-and second-year nursing students. Data were collected through questionnaires assessing smartphone use, addiction, and health impacts, followed by semi-structured interviews with 12 participants. Quantitative and qualitative analyses were performed to explore usage patterns, addiction, and preventive awareness. Results: The average daily smartphone usage was 6 h and 15 min. Of the participants, 86 % showed signs of smartphone addiction, while 66 % exhibited subjective convergence insufficiency, indicating potential ocular discomfort. Although students had some awareness of harmful effects, many struggled to regulate their smartphone use effectively. Conclusion:This study reveals excessive smartphone use among nursing students, contributing to addiction and ocular discomfort. Despite awareness of its negative impacts, students lack effective preventive strategies. Integrating digital health literacy and targeted prevention measures into nursing curricula is essential to address these risks and promote healthier smartphone use.</div
Direct and indirect costs of breast cancer management in Sub-Saharan Africa
International audienceIn Benin, breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related mortality among women, with 566 deaths reported in 2020. The cost of its management remains poorly understood, although its estimation is essential for assessing the implementation of public health policies, particularly in a resource-limited setting. This study aims to estimate the direct and indirect costs of breast cancer management from the patients' perspective. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in three healthcare facilities in Cotonou, collecting healthcare expenditures from 104 breast cancer patients through a structured questionnaire. A linear regression analysis was performed to identify factors influencing direct medical costs. Results: The average direct medical cost of breast cancer management in Benin was estimated at US 774.7). The median productivity loss cost, based on patient-reported data, was US 477.2 -US$ 1336.1). Chemotherapy accounted for 38.5 % of the direct medical costs. An advanced disease stage was significantly associated with higher medical costs (coefficient = 0.50; p = 0.007). Conclusion: Breast cancer leads to high direct and indirect costs, especially in the advanced stages of the disease in Sub-Saharan Africa. PFMG2025–integrating genomic medicine into the national healthcare system in France
International audienceIntegrating genomic medicine into healthcare systems is a health policy challenge that requires continuously transferring scientific advances into clinics and ensuring equal access for patients. France was one of the first countries to integrate genome sequencing into clinical practice at a nationwide level, with the ambition to provide more accurate diagnostics and personalized treatments. Since 2016, the French government has invested €239M in the 2025 French Genomic Medicine Initiative (PFMG2025) which has so far focused on patients with rare diseases (RD), cancer genetic predisposition (CGP) and cancers. PFMG2025 has addressed numerous challenges to set up an operational organizational framework. As of December the 31st 2023, 12,737 results were returned to prescribers for RD/CGP patients (median delivery time: 202 days, diagnostic yield: 30.6%) and 3109 for cancer patients (median delivery time: 45 days). PFMG2025's future priorities encompass ensuring economic sustainability, strengthening links with research, empowering patients and practitioners, and fostering collaborations with European partners.Funding As of December the 31st 2023, €239M have been invested by the French government.</div

Anthracenyl‐Hydrazinyl‐Thiazolo Arene Ruthenium Complexes Coupled to Photosensitizers as PDT Agents
International audienceAbstract Four anthracenyl‐functionalized hydrazinyl‐thiazolo pro‐ligands ( L 1 ‐ L 4 ) have been synthesized and characterized. Complexation to p‐ cymene ruthenium units has been conducted in methanol, affording four p ‐cymene ruthenium complexes [Ru( p ‐cymene)( η 2 ‐ L )Cl]Cl (abbreviated [ RuL 1‐4 Cl]Cl). The ligands are coordinated to ruthenium by two nitrogen atoms, thus forming five‐membered metalla‐cycles. Then, these four arene ruthenium piano‐stool complexes ( RuL 1‐4 ) were coordinated at the periphery of three pyridyl‐functionalized porphyrin compounds, 5‐pyridyl‐10,15,20‐triphenylporphyrin ( MPP ), 5,15‐dipyridyl‐10,20‐diphenylporphyrin ( DPP ), and 5,10,15,20‐tetrapyridylporphyrin ( TPP ), after removal of the chlorides in [ RuL 1‐4 Cl]Cl by addition of silver triflate, to produce the corresponding dicationic [ MPP ( RuL 1‐4 )] 2+ , tetracationic [ DPP ( RuL 1‐4 ) 2 ] 4+ and octacationic complexes [ TPP ( RuL 1‐4 ) 4 ] 8+ . All organic molecules ( L 1 ‐ L 4 , MPP , DPP , TPP ), organometallic complexes ([ RuL 1‐4 Cl]Cl), as well as the 12 porphyrin arene ruthenium systems [ MPP ( RuL 1‐4 )](CF 3 SO 3 ) 2 , [ DPP ( RuL 1‐4 ) 2 ](CF 3 SO 3 ) 4 and [ TPP ( RuL 1‐4 ) 4 ](CF 3 SO 3 ) 8 have been tested as anticancer agents on the colon cancer cell line HCT116. In addition to cytotoxicity, the phototoxicity of the porphyrin‐containing derivatives MPP ( RuL 1‐4 ), DPP ( RuL 1‐4 ) 2 and TPP ( RuL 1‐4 ) 4 , together with MPP , DPP , TPP, and [ RuL 1‐4 Cl]Cl, were evaluated under blue (420 nm, 20 J/cm 2 ), green (527 nm, 72 J/cm 2 ), and red (630 nm, 71 J/cm 2 ) light, showing a phototoxicity in the lower nanomolar range as well as excellent phototoxic indexes
Steric confinement for suppressing ion migration and boosting thermoelectric performance in Cu–S system via Ag and Se co-doping
International audienceThe Cu-S superionic compound exhibits excellent thermoelectric (TE) performance in the mid-temperature region. However, obtaining a thermally and electrically stable material in this system is still challenging. Herein, motivated by the perspective of steric confinement for suppressing Cu+ migration, we designed an Ag and Ag-Se co-doping strategy on pristine Cu1.93S to modulate the crystal structure. On one hand, Ag dopant is discovered to act as a vacancy filler, simultaneously optimizing carrier concentration and reducing thermal conductivity. Moreover, strategic Se co-substitution stabilizes Ag insertion within the Cu-S vacancy and induces non-negligible enhancement of phonon scattering to further reduce thermal conductivity. A competitive peak zT of 1.33@873 K was obtained for the Cu1.93Ag0.04S0.9Se0.1 sample at a relatively moderate temperature among current state-of-the-art Cu-S system. Moreover, thanks to the steric confinement, the Cu1.93Ag0.04S0.9Se0.1 composition exhibited superior electrical stability under dynamic DC-current compared to CuxS (with 1.9

Overcoming the Technical Hurdles of IoT Adoption: the FITNESS Project Vision and Insights
White paper from the ANR-funded project NF-FITNESSThe Internet of Things (IoT) has emerged as a transformative force, enabling seamless connectivity and data exchange between diverse devices and networks. However, the realization of a truly interoperable, secure, and energy-efficient IoT ecosystem remains a significant challenge. In this paper, we present the vision and the first key findings of the FITNESS project, a comprehensive research initiative funded by the French Research Agency (ANR) as part of the France 2030 program. Our work aims to develop solutions that enable the IoT's full potential, emphasizing scalability, interoperability, security, and sustainability, and enabling seamless connectivity and efficient data transmission between diverse IoT devices and networks. We focus in this paper on three critical areas: IoT architecture and interoperability, the place of Artificial Intelligence in IoT, and energy efficiency. Additionally, we identify and analyze key use cases that demonstrate the practical applications of our research, highlighting the importance of real-world implementation to validate and refine our solutions. Through our dedicated research efforts, we have made significant advances across several key areas, while also laying the groundwork for further development in others. These contributions support the emergence of a more secure, efficient, and interoperable IoT ecosystem, and provide a foundation for adoption by stakeholders seeking to harness its transformative potential
