International audienceThe corrections which are necessary in the determination of the Electron Energy Distribution Function (EEDF) by means of Langmuir probe under near-probe space-charge layer conditions are investigated. Exact calculations of the first and second derivative function of the I(V) probe characteristic are given and approximations are used to determine the electron diffusion parameter (sink parameter) and consequently the EEDF. The results obtained using these different approximations are discussed and compared with those obtained using other methods reported in the literature
Spectroscopy of Ho:Y2O3 transparent ceramics: Effect of YF3 addition
International audienceTransparent ceramics of Holmium-doped yttria (Ho:Y2O3) were fabricated by Hot Isostatic Pressing at 1720 °C / 190 MPa in argon, and the effect of YF3 addition on their microstructure, optical, vibronic and infrared emission properties was studied. The fluorine addition improves the ceramic transparency, accelerates the grain growth and enhances the luminescence lifetimes of Ho3+ states responsible for emissions at 2 µm and 3 µm

Impact of fear on pediatric pain assessment: A retrospective study
International audienceBackground: Fear and pain are intimately linked in the experience of caring for a child. The advent of a self-assessment tool for fear makes it possible to study the link between these two emotions. Objectives: The primary objective was to determine whether self-assessment of fear (with the Trouillomètre®) affects self-assessment of pain. The three secondary objectives were to search for a correlation between fear and pain scores, and to analyze the effect on analgesic consumption and tool satisfaction. Methods: A retrospective study was carried out in a French university hospital comparing the VAS (visual analogue scale) values of children aged 7-12 presenting to pediatric ED before and after the introduction of a fear assessment by Trouillomètre®. Selected pain scores were measured using the VAS. Analgesic consumption was compared between the exposed and unexposed periods. Satisfaction was assessed using a questionnaire distributed to the paramedical team. Results: 154 patients in the Trouillomètre® group and 154 in the unexposed group were included in the analysis. There was no significant difference between the 2 groups in terms of pain assessment, but there was a significant correlation between fear and pain (rho = 0.18, p-Value = 0.002). Following the implementation of the tool, there was an increase in level 1 analgesic use and a corresponding decrease in level 2 analgesic use. The paramedical teams were satisfied with the tool. Conclusion: This study did not show any impact of fear assessment on pain assessment, but secondary analyses suggest that there is an effect of fear management on pain already described in the literature, and that Trouillomètre® can be used to highlight this fear for its better management
International audienceThe trade-off between reducing pesticide use and ensuring effective crop protection is a key challenge for sustainable agriculture. Stimulating the plant’s natural defense mechanisms represents a promising alternative. In this study, we evaluated the potential of pulsed light as a physical elicitor in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum). This technology is based on the emission of brief but intense light flashes, covering a broad spectrum (from UV-C to infrared), capable of simultaneous activation of multiple signaling pathways. Tomato plants were treated using a standard protocol and subjected to biochemical, transcriptional, physiological, and pathological analyses. The treatment significantly increased the activity of defense-related and antioxidant enzymes, the accumulation of phenolic compounds and callose, and the expression of key immunity-related genes. Upon Botrytis cinerea inoculation, pretreated tomato plants showed enhanced defense responses and a significant reduction in disease severity, indicating a priming effect. The standard protocol did not impair photosynthesis, growth, or yield. These findings highlight pulsed light as an innovative technology for integrated crop protection
