Ayurveda is a science of life that deals with prevention and cure of diseases. To unscrew the pathology of various diseases, a thorough understanding the structural and functional built of the human physique is inevitable. To achieve such goals there should be knowledge of body (Sharir), body parts (Anga and Pratyanga) and their Pramana (anthropometry). Angula Pramana is determined by measuring the height (Utsedha), length (Ayam), breadth (Vistar) and circumference (Parinah) of Pratyangas. Here finger breadth of the individual (i.e. Swa-Angula) is used as the reference unit of measurement. Anthropometry measurement of the human body means measurement of height and weight where Acharya Charaka, Sushruta, and Vagbhatt have given different values of human height which is 84 Angula, 120 Angula, 31/2 Hasta respectively. The study was conducted on 200 healthy volunteers in age group of 18-50years. One Angula as a unit of Angula Pramana was obtained by measuring the width of Madhyamparva of middle finger of working hand. The measurements were taken in centimetres for standardization as per metric system. This article summarizes the facts related to Anguli Pramana from classical, Ayurvedic and modern literature along with result of our research work to identify the anatomical landmark of Sheerogreevagata Pratyanga measured through Anguli Pramana and its applied aspect. At present, there are many physical anomalies i.e., genetic, endocrine, congenital, developmental disorders and traumatic injury which results as anatomical disfiguration of Shira and Greeva that can distinguish from their Anguli pramana or anthropometry

    Get PDF
Objectives: Treatment of Alzheimer’s disease is the worldwide problem as it is having major impact on the memory. Ayurveda science describes Brahmi (Bacopa Monnieri) as memory enhancing drug which can improve the memory power in the Alzheimer’s disease. Data Sources: Classical textbooks and published research studies were searched in the context of use of Brahmi (Bacopa Monnieri) in the Alzheimer’s disease. Online search engines namely J gate, Google scholar, PubMed, DHARA online and AYUSH research portal were used for data mining of published research works. Review Methods: References and studies including the effect of Brahmi (Bacopa Monnieri) in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease were reviewed and reported according to the PRISMA guidelines. We include randomized controlled trials with mild cognitive impairment in Alzheimer’s disease which involves Bacopa Monnieri, its extract or its active ingredients. Results and Discussion: 5 studies found eligible for the search. Two studies used extracts of Bacopa Monnieri extracts while three studies used other drugs in combination with the Bacopa Monnieri extract. The cognitive subscale scores of the Alzheimer’s disease Assessment scale found in one study, mini mental state examination scores were found in three studies. All the studies found a significant difference in statistics. Hence, Brahmi (Bacopa Monnieri) may find to be effective in Alzheimer’s disease and its equivalent disease in Ayurveda. Conclusion: The evidence obtained from the present systematic review is of very low certainty. The evidence from 5 trials suggests that there is a very little difference between Bacopa Monnieri and a placebo or donepezil in the treatment of Alzheimer disease or mild cognitive impairment which needs to find in further future studies No major safety issues were reported in the trials included in this review

Astigmatism is a type of refractive error in which refraction varies in different meridians of the eyes; consequently, the light rays entering the eye cannot converge to a point of focus but form various focal lines. All the refractive disorders including astigmatism come under Timira. In modern science the treatment options of astigmatism include spectacles, contact lens, and Lasik surgery which are very expensive. Hence in order to provide efficient and better cure by cost effective method through Ayurveda, this study was planned which incorporates Kriya Kalpa procedure, oral drug, and eye exercises to tackle it efficiently. Aim: To evaluate the efficacy of Saptamrita Ghrita Tarpana and Eye exercises in management of Vataja Timira w.s.r. to astigmatism. Objectives: 1. To evaluate the effect of eye exercises and Shatavaryadi Churna in Vataja Timira w.s.r. to astigmatism. 2. To evaluate the effect of Saptamritam Ghrita Tarpana and Shatavaryadi Churna in Vataja Timira w.s.r. to astigmatism. Materials and Methods: 30 patients with Vataja Timira were randomly assigned to two groups for a clinical trial. Result: The clinical data shows that the effect of therapy on Vataja Timira is 60% in Group A and 51.04% in Group B. Conclusion: It can be concluded that clinically Saptamrita ghrita Tarpana, Shatavaryadi churna and eye exercises combine work better to manage the Vataja Timira

The most common disease currently affecting a large population is Sandhivata. The term Sandhivata (considered as Osteoarthritis -OA in Ayurveda) is derived from two words Sandhi and Vata. Sandhi is considered as joint and Vata is one amongst the three Dosha namely Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Sandhivata affects most commonly the weight bearing joints, primarily the knee joint. Sandhivata is challenging to treat due to its chronicity, incurability, and complication. Treatment in contemporary health science (modern or allopathy) is aimed primarily to alleviating only symptoms temporarily and is accompanied by a variety of negative side effects, toxic effects, and unpleasant reactions. The aetiopathogenesis and symptomatology of Sandhivata are succinctly described in the Ayurvedic classics. One such chronic, inflammatory, and degenerative condition that significantly affects a person\u27s quality of life is Janu Sandhivata, Which can be very well correlated with OA of the knee joint. Treatment approach in Ayurveda system of health care emphasis on Aahaara (diet)- Vihara (physical activities) as foremost measure in treating any disease followed with use of Samshmana, Samshodhana or Shalya karma. The current study focuses on a thorough analysis of Sandhivata with the aim of assessing and highlighting the effectiveness of various Ayurvedic treatments in patients with OA. An effort has been made to review numerous formulations mentioned in the Ayurvedic classics (like Kwatha, Guggulu Kalpana, Ghrita, Taila, Gutika, Rasa Aushadhi and Panchakarma procedures like, Abhyanaga, Swedana, Basti, Janubasti, Rasayana therapy, Agnikarma) pathological condition of Sandhivata, which may be helpful for clinicians and researchers for their clinical practice

Etiopathological Evaluation of Swasa Roga in Relation to Anxiety

    Get PDF
The modern era has seen significant changes in lifestyle that have disturbed people’s physical and emotional well- being. Ayurvedic classics state that unhealthy lifestyle (Apathya Aahar and Apathya Vihar) is the root cause of all the Vyadhis. Many people go through periods of Anxiety at various occasions of their lives. Although these periods of anxiety are not permanent, if the symptoms persist for a long time, it can cause damage to both mind and body. Health is considered as a state free from mental and physical disorders. Anxiety serves as a predisposing factor for disease such as respiratory diseases. In Ayurveda respiratory disorders are mentioned under the Swasa vyadhi. Swasa roga is Vata Kaphajanye vyadhi and its aggravation is directly related to the anxiety. In the Ayurvedic classics, none of the Acharya has given any clear description regarding the role of anxiety in aggravation of Swasa roga. The lack of data drives the need to define the pathophysiogenesis of Swasa roga with respect to Anxiety in order to understand the progression of Swasa roga in a better way

Haemorrhoids, commonly known as piles, are a prevalent anorectal disorder affecting a significant portion of the population. This case report presents the successful management of second-degree internal haemorrhoids using Ayurvedic treatment, specifically Kshara karma with Apamarga pratisaraneeya Tikshna kshara. A 32 year male patient with prolapsed pile mass and bleeding during defecation was treated at the National Institute of Ayurveda, Jaipur. After a few days of initial post-operative pain and swelling, the patient\u27s symptoms significantly improved, with the haemorrhoids reducing in size and eventually disappearing. The post-operative complications were managed by the internal administration of Triphala guggulu, Yashtimadhu taila matravasti, and sitz bath. This case highlights the efficacy of Ayurvedic treatment, particularly Kshara karma, as an office procedure for managing haemorrhoids. The approach demonstrated reduced hospitalization, minimal bleeding, and post-operative complications, making it a promising alternative to conventional surgical procedures

A Review of Antihyperlipidaemic Medicinal Plants used in Ayurveda

    Get PDF
Hyperlipidaemia is considered a significant modifiable risk factor for Cardiovascular Diseases (CVD). The risk of cardiovascular events is approximately three times higher in comparison to individuals with normal lipid profile. Current practice of hyperlipidaemia management includes life style modifications, exercise, dietary changes and drug therapy with statins. However, statins are expensive and having several limitations including adverse effects. Hence there has been a long demand for evidence based alternative medicines which can improve lipid profile. It is also one of the thrust areas of WHO to find out economical, safe and effective solutions for non-communicable diseases (NCD) based on traditional medical systems. Ayurveda is the oldest scientific traditional system of medicine practiced in India. It offers a variety of plant based medicines for the management of hyperlipidaemia. The current review is aimed at finding potential medicinal plants for effective management of hyperlipidaemia/dyslipidaemia based on the results of experimental and clinical studies
