AYURVEDIC MANAGEMENT OF GUILLAIN-BARRÉ SYNDROME: A CASE STUDY
Guillain-Barré syndrome is a disorder which is caused by the body\u27s immune system attacking its own peripheral nervous system. The syndrome afflicts about one person in 100,000. Either gender can be affected in any age group especially between ages 30 and 50, however risk increases with age. It often follows a minor infection Most of the time, signs of the original infection have disappeared before the symptoms of Guillain-Barré begin. Guillain-Barré syndrome damages parts of nerves. This nerve damage causes tingling, muscle weakness, and paralysis. Guillain-Barré syndrome most often affects the nerve\u27s covering (myelin sheath). Such damage is called demyelination and it causes nerve signals to move more slowly. Damage to other parts of the nerve can cause the nerve to stop working altogether. It is a paralyzing syndrome which can have dire consequences if not managed by an informed medical team. This article will explain how this disorder begins, how it is managed in Ayurveda. It can be compared to Kaphavruta vyana, so approach is to treat Kapha first and then to Vata with Brihmana chikitsa

To assess the effect of Guduchi Ksheera Basti in Asthikshaya or osteoporosis, the study was undertaken.Total of 30 patients who were diagnosed to be osteoporotic on BMD test (bone mineral density), were taken in to a single group. Guduchi Ksheera Basti was given for duration of 15 days and follow up was done after one month and BMD test was done to see improvement. Treatment was more effective in subjective parameters like Asthi Toda, Sparsha Asahyata and moderately effective in objective parameters of BMD t -score
PHYTOCHEMICAL SCREENING OF SAPTAPARNA (ALSTONIA SCHOLARIS R. Br.) BARK
The Ayurvedic Pharmaceutical Industries use barks of many herbal drugs like Neema, Vata, Udumbara, Parisha, Saptaparna, Plaksha, Baboola etc. for the manufacturing of different herbal medicines. The stem bark of Alstonia scholaris R. Br. commonly known as Saptaparna in Ayurved, is in demand, due to its antipyretic, galactogogue, cardiotonic, anticancer, anti-helminthic etc. activities. But, the identification and separation of these barks drugs from each other is very difficult. Hence, a preliminary study has been done to ensure the basic phytochemical profile of A. scholaris R. Br. stem bark for identification of herbal drug. Physicochemical parameters, preliminary phytochemical screening, quantitative estimation of alkaloid and Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) were carried out in the present study. Physicochemical data revealed, there is more amount of water soluble extractive value (27.10% w/w) than alcohol soluble extractive value (7.40% w/w). Facts of phytochemical screening showed presents of alkaloid, carbohydrate, tannin, saponin, flavanoids and cardiotonic glycosides in the sample. Result of TLC identification showed 7, 8, and 6 spots under short UV, long UV and after spray reagent respectively. The present study on phytochemical investigation of A. scholaris R. Br. bark will be helpful in developing standards for quality, purity and sample identification of this plant
