Breeding success of a marine central place forager in the context of climate change: A modeling approach
International audienceIn response to climate warming, a southward shift in productive frontal systems serving as the main foraging sites for many top predator species is likely to occur in Subantarctic areas. Central place foragers, such as seabirds and pinnipeds, are thus likely to cope with an increase in the distance between foraging locations and their land-based breeding colonies. Understanding how central place foragers should modify their foraging behavior in response to changes in prey accessibility appears crucial. A spatially explicit individual-based simulation model (Marine Central Place Forager Simulator (MarCPFS)), including bio-energetic components, was built to evaluate effects of possible changes in prey resources accessibility on individual performances and breeding success. The study was calibrated on a particular example: the Antarctic fur seal (Arctocephalus gazella), which alternates between oceanic areas in which females feed and the land-based colony in which they suckle their young over a 120 days rearing period. Our model shows the importance of the distance covered to feed and prey aggregation which appeared to be key factors to which animals are highly sensitive. Memorization and learning abilities also appear to be essential breeding success traits. Females were found to be most successful for intermediate levels of prey aggregation and short distance to the resource, resulting in optimal female body length. Increased distance to resources due to climate warming should hinder pups' growth and survival while female body length should increase
Effects of Post-Exercise Protein Intake on Muscle Mass and Strength During Resistance Training: is There an Optimal Ratio Between Fast and Slow Proteins?
International audienceWhile effects of the two classes of proteins found in milk (i.e. soluble proteins, including whey, and casein) on muscle protein synthesis have been well investigated after a single bout of resistance exercise (RE), the combined effects of these two proteins on the muscle responses to resistance training (RT) have not yet been investigated. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the effects of protein supplementation varying by the ratio between milk soluble proteins (fast-digested protein) and casein (slow-digested protein) on the muscle to a 9-week RT program. In a double-blind protocol, 31 resistance-trained men, were assigned to 3 groups receiving a drink containing 20g of protein comprising either 100% of fast protein (FP(100), n=10), 50% of fast and 50% of slow proteins (FP(50), n=11) or 20% of fast protein and 80% of casein (FP(20), n=10) at the end of training bouts. Body composition (DXA), and maximal strength in dynamic and isometric were analyzed before and after RT. Moreover, blood plasma aminoacidemia kinetic after RE was measured. The results showed a higher leucine bioavailability after ingestion of FP(100) and FP(50) drinks, when compared with FP(20) (p<0.05). However, the RT-induced changes in lean body mass (p<0.01), dynamic (p<0.01), and isometric muscle strength (p<0.05) increased similarly in all experimental groups. To conclude, compared to the FP(20) group, the higher rise in plasma amino acids following the ingestion of FP(100) and FP(50) did not lead to higher muscle long-term adaptations
Comparing Jupiter interior structure models to Juno gravity measurements and the role of a dilute core
International audienceThe Juno spacecraft has measured Jupiter's low-order, even gravitational moments, --, to an unprecedented precision, providing important constraints on the density profile and core mass of the planet. Here we report on a selection of interior models based on ab initio computer simulations of hydrogen-helium mixtures. We demonstrate that a dilute core, expanded to a significant fraction of the planet's radius, is helpful in reconciling the calculated with Juno's observations. Although model predictions are strongly affected by the chosen equation of state, the prediction of an enrichment of in the deep, metallic envelope over that in the shallow, molecular envelope holds. We estimate Jupiter's core to contain an 7--25 Earth mass of heavy elements. We discuss the current difficulties in reconciling measured with the equations of state, and with theory for formation and evolution of the planet

Flowering cover crops in winter increase pest control but not trophic link diversity
International audienceIn agrosystems, the increase in non-crop plant diversity by habitat management in or around arable fields contributes to improved Conservation Biological Control. During winter, plant flower are often used as monospecific ground cover and are expected to die before flowering as a result of recurrent frost events. Decreases in minimal temperature due to climate change offers new possibilities for plants used in such sown cover crops to mature and flowers. Changes in plant phenology thus constitute an important environmental change with expected consequences for ecosystem functioning, such as biological control. In Brittany, where winter agricultural landscape is dominated by a mosaic of cereal and sown cover crops, we assessed the consequences of mustard (Synapis alba) flowering cover crops (MFCC) on aphid parasitism and food web structure in plots adjoining cereal crops, in contrast to plots close to spontaneous non-crop plants (SNCP) of the same field. Overall, aphid parasitism rate at the field scale was strong (60–70%), being 13% higher adjacent to the MFCC than closer to SNCP. In addition, there was no change in food web structure between the two distinct zones, enabling us to hypothesize that MFCC mostly constituted an alimentary patch. The positive effect on parasitism rate was significant but weak, as floral nectar of mustard is known to be of poor quality for parasitoids. Results highlight the potential advantages of adapting practices in response to actual changes in agrosystems. Increase floral diversity in sown cover crops could constitute a complementary method in management programs, by providing more alternative food resources, alternative hosts, and climatic refuge to enhance the Conservation Biological Control of parasitoid populations
Shared predation: positive effects of predator distraction
Simple rules based on population equilibria can characterize indirect interactions in threespecies systems but fail to predict them when considering behavioral mechanisms. In this paper, we revisit the effects of shared predation, i.e. the situation in which two prey are consumed by a common predator. Such predation usually induces negative indirect interactions between prey, or apparent competition, through an increase of predator density and thus of predation pressure. Two mechanisms can however weaken apparent competition and lead to equivocal signs of indirect interactions. On the one hand, predator distraction, which stems from the difficulty to efficiently forage for different prey at the same moment in time and diminishes the number of prey captured per predator. On the other hand, predator negative density dependence limits predator growth. To getfurther insights into simple rules describing indirect interactions brought about by shared predation, we studied two classes of one-predator–two-prey models exhibiting these two mechanisms. We found robust simple rules derived from predator equilibria which state that at least one prey is favored by the presence of the other when the predators partition their foraging effort between them. These rules thus characterize a surprising wide range of indirect effects including apparent predation, apparent commensalism and apparent mutualism. They also highlight different situations in which larger predator populations do not entail smaller prey populations and in which neither prey species can be negatively affected by the other
SEaMLESS: A SErvice Migration cLoud Architecture for Energy Saving and Memory releaSing Capabilities
International audienceIdle virtual machines (VMs) are a waste of resources in data centers. We introduce SEaMLESS, which transforms a fully-fledged idle VM into a lightweight and resourceless Virtual Network Function (VNF). Idle VMs can then be saved to disk and release their memory. Simultaneously, the VNF provides service availability. Upon user activity, the appropriate VM is restored, without introducing any interruption for service users. Tens of VNFs can be contained within the same memory space required for one single VM, thereby facilitating ample resources savings when scaled up to a data center

Exploring Halo Substructure with Giant Stars. XV. Discovery of a Connection between the Monoceros Ring and the Triangulum-Andromeda Overdensity?
International audienceThanks to modern sky surveys, over twenty stellar streams and overdensity structures have been discovered in the halo of the Milky Way. In this paper, we present an analysis of spectroscopic observations of individual stars from one such structure, "A13", first identified as an overdensity using the M giant catalog from the Two Micron All-Sky Survey. Our spectroscopic observations show that stars identified with A13 have a velocity dispersion of 40 , implying that it is a genuine coherent structure rather than a chance super-position of random halo stars. From its position on the sky, distance (15~kpc heliocentric), and kinematical properties, A13 is likely to be an extension of another low Galactic latitude substructure -- the Galactic Anticenter Stellar Structure (also known as the Monoceros Ring) -- towards smaller Galactic longitude and farther distance. Furthermore, the kinematics of A13 also connect it with another structure in the southern Galactic hemisphere -- the Triangulum-Andromeda overdensity. We discuss these three connected structures within the context of a previously proposed scenario that one or all of these features originate from the disk of the Milky Way
