Nanotechnologies as a Key Issue for Microsensors: Example of wave-based resonant devices for (bio)chemical detection
International audienceIn this talk, we shall first briefly introduce Resonant wave-based microsensing transducers. Among them, the versatile mechanical principle of Surface Acoustic Wave or SAW-based devices for highly sensitive and real time detection have great potential. We shall then touch upon a large spectrum of nano structured materials as sensitive coatings for various chemical or biochemical sensing applications, especially environmental and health related ones. Nanotechnologies offer a powerful tool for designing innovative advanced materials needed for such sensitive layers, both the material itself by chemists as well as coating and patterning processes by technological multidisciplinary teams. Indeed, good sensing properties imply efficient sensitive layers intimately linked to the transducing platform. This means high specific surface, for increased sensitivity towards target species as well as, most of all, a form of specificity towards interferent compounds. A particular structuration adapted to the size and type of the compounds to be detected, can improve sorption/interaction/diffusion phenomena often leading to necessary compromise between sensitivity and response time. Other properties such as good temperature behaviour or chemical stability, among others, can be of particular importance. A typical approach deals with optimizing a versatile matrix as layer with good mechanical properties on the transducer, and by functionalizing it, before or after deposition, with end-groups dedicated for specific target species. Among examples, we present materials based on organic, inorganic, hybrid materials, either natural or engineered, typically with micro- to nano-structuration and surface modification. We also discuss an increasing interest for carbon materials such as nanotubes or graphene which could lead to unexpected sensitivities. The integration of sensitive thin-films, microfluidics and other embedded features leads to microsensing platforms customized for the targeted compounds and applications. Development of wireless solutions for micro-energy brings us to perspectives in wireless sensing networks. Nanotechnologies are involved in such overall system integration, too
Finding cut-vertices in the square roots of a graph
The square of a given graph is obtained from by adding an edge between every two vertices at distance two in . Given a graph class , the -Square Root problem asks for the recognition of the squares of graphs in . In this paper, we answer positively to an open question of [Golovach et al., IWOCA'16] by showing that the squares of cactus block graphs can be recognized in polynomial time. Our proof is based on new relationships between the decomposition of a graph by cut-vertices and the decomposition of its square by clique cutsets. More precisely, we prove that the closed neighbourhoods of cut-vertices in induce maximal prime complete subgraphs of . Furthermore, based on this relationship, we introduce a quite complete machinery in order to compute from a given graph the block-cut tree of a desired square root (if any). Although the latter tree is not uniquely defined, we show surprisingly that it can only differ marginally between two different roots. Our approach not only gives the first polynomial-time algorithm for the -Square Root problem in different graph classes , but it also provides a unifying framework for the recognition of the squares of trees, block graphs and cactus graphs — among others
Genetic diversity of Meloidogyne spp. parasitising potato in Brazil and aggressiveness of M. javanica populations on susceptible cultivars
Root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.) significantly impact potato production worldwide and in Brazil they are considered one of the most important group of nematodes affecting potatoes. The objectives of this study were to survey Meloidogyne spp. associated with potatoes in Brazil, determine their genetic diversity and assess the aggressiveness of M. javanica on two susceptible potato cultivars. Fifty-seven root-knot nematode populations were identified using esterase phenotyping, including Meloidogyne javanica, M. incognita, M. arenaria and M. ethiopica. Overall, root-knot nematodes were present in ca 43% of sampled sites, in which M. javanica was the most prevalent species, and the phenotypes Est J3, J2a and J2 occurred in 91.2, 6.7 and 2.1% of the positive samples, respectively. Other species, such as M. incognita, M. arenaria and M. ethiopica, were found less frequently and occurred at rates of 6.4, 4.3 and 2.1% of the samples, respectively. Sometimes, M. javanica was found in mixtures with other root-knot nematodes in ca 10.6% of sites containing Meloidogyne. After confirming the identification of 17 isolates of M. javanica and one isolate each of M. incognita, M. arenaria and M. ethiopica by SCAR markers, the populations were used to infer their genetic diversity using RAPD markers. Results revealed low intraspecifc genetic diversity among isolates (13.9%) for M. javanica. Similarly, M. javanica sub-populations (J2a) clustered together (81% of bootstrap), indicating subtle variation from typical J3 populations. The aggressiveness of four populations of M. javanica from different Brazilian states on two susceptible potato cultivars was tested under glasshouse conditions. Results indicated differences in aggressiveness among these populations and showed that potato disease was proportional to nematode reproduction factor
Using Calendula officinalis as a floral resource to enhance aphid and thrips suppression by the flower bug Orius sauteri (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae)
BACKGROUND The flower bug Orius sauteri (Poppius) (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae) is widely used as a biocontrol agent against thrips and aphids infesting greenhouse vegetables in Asia. The survival and oviposition of such predators, as well as the biocontrol services they provide, may be enhanced by adding extra floral resources to the crops. In the present study we investigated the effects of the plant Calendula officinalis L., used as a floral resource, for promoting the control of Myzus persicae (Sulzer) and Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) by O. sauteri under laboratory and greenhouse conditions. RESULTS Results showed that the presence of C. officinalis enhanced aphid and thrips suppression via an increased O. sauteri population growth. The predator populations responded positively to the addition of C. officinalis in the system, and they also varied as a function of the temperatures tested under laboratory conditions. In a similar way, predator populations varied among seasons, with the highest densities recorded in May in the greenhouse. CONCLUSION:C. officinalis can be used to increase available resources for natural enemies used in agricultural crops, notably in greenhouses. This study also provides evidence that increasing floral resources can enhance pest suppression provided by O. sauteri
Grey and harbour seals in France: distribution at sea, connectivity and trends in abundance at haulout sites
International audienceGrey (Halichoerus grypus) and harbour seals (Phoca vitulina) are sympatric seal species, but they display distinct strategies of habitat use and connectivity between haulout sites. The distribution patterns and variations in relative abundance of both species were investigated along the French coast of the English Channel, at the southern limit of their range where seal numbers are increasing. Regular censuses conducted at all main haulout sites in mainland France showed significant seasonal variations at most sites, with more harbour seals counted during summer (breeding and moulting seasons), and more grey seals during summer only in the eastern English Channel. Trends in maximum haulout numbers at haulout sites showed a significant increase over the last five years, ranging from 9.7 to 30.9% per year for harbour seals, and from 5.8% (in the western English Channel) to 49.2% (in the eastern English Channel) per year for grey seals. These rates of increase in grey seal numbers are not linked to local pup production and most probably result from seal movements from the southwest British Isles and the North Sea, respectively. Aerial surveys conducted across the English Channel showed that most seal observations at sea were concentrated in the north-eastern English Channel. Telemetry showed that the 28 harbour seals tracked remained highly coastal, within a radius of 100 km from their haulout sites, and did not move to other known colonies. Grey seals moved much greater distances, reaching up to 1200 km from their capture site. More than half of the 45 grey seals tracked crossed the English Channel, especially during the breeding season, moving to known colonies in the southwest British Isles and the North Sea. Combining individual tracks and long-term surveys of the seal populations allowed a better understanding of the dynamics of these populations and their connectivity at a larger regional scale. The findings provide direct information for the management of grey and harbour seals within the frame of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive, and highlight focus areas where potential interactions between the two species should be monitored
