A New Family of Exponential-Based High-Order DGTD Methods for Modeling 3-D Transient Multiscale Electromagnetic Problems
International audienceA new family of exponential-based time integration methods are proposed for the time-domain Maxwell's equations discretized by a high-order discontinuous Galerkin (DG) scheme formulated on locally refined unstructured meshes. These methods, which are developed from the Lawson method, remove the stiffness on the time explicit integration of the semidiscrete operator associated with the fine part of the mesh, and allow for the use of high-order time explicit scheme for the coarse part operator. They combine excellent stability properties with the ability to obtain very accurate solutions even for very large time step sizes. Here, the explicit time integration of the Lawson-transformed semidiscrete system relies on a low-storage Runge-Kutta (LSRK) scheme, leading to a combined Lawson-LSRK scheme. In addition, efficient techniques are presented to further improve the efficiency of this exponential-based time integration. For the efficient calculation of matrix exponential, we employ the Krylov subspace method. Numerical experiments are presented to assess the stability, verify the accuracy, and numerical convergence of the Lawson-LSRK scheme. They also demonstrate that the DG time-domain methods based on the proposed time integration scheme can be much faster than those based on classical fully explicit time stepping schemes, with the same accuracy and moderate memory usage increase on locally refined unstructured meshes, and are thus very promising for modeling 3-D multiscale electromagnetic problems

Two-stage kinetics of field-induced aggregation of medium-sized magnetic nanoparticles
International audienceThe present paper is focused on theoretical and experimental study of the kinetics of field-induced aggregation of magnetic nanoparticles of a size range of 20-100 nm. Our results demonstrate that (a) in polydisperse suspensions, the largest particles could play a role of the centers of nucleation for smaller particles during the earliest heterogeneous nucleation stage; (b) an intermediate stage of the aggregate growth (due to diffusion and migration of individual nanoparticles towards the aggregates) is weakly influenced by the magnetic field strength; (c) the stage of direct coalescence of drop-like aggregates (occurring under magnetic attraction between them) plays a dominant role at the intermediate and late stages of the phase separation, with the timescale decreasing as a square of the aggregate magnetization
Combining Fuzzy Logic and Formal Argumentation for Legal Interpretation
International audienceThe interpretation of a norm is often uncertain and connicting. In this paper we propose a model for arguing about legal interpretation , which considers the problems of vagueness. After motivating our adoption of graded categories as a tool to tackle the problem of open texture in legal interpretation, we introduce a model based on fuzzy logic and argumentation. Then, we conduct a case study by using an example from medically assisted reproduction
Vers une génétique cognitive des médias
International audienceThe cognitive sciences have provided crucial insights into several fields of cultural sciences. In particular, the faculty of language has been the area of spectacular advances which have produced arguments in favor of a naturalized vision of linguistic artifacts. It is now the turn of writing, the first complex medium of the human being to seal the union of verbal language with a system of graphic signs, to be subjected to the application of biological epistemology and thereby to confirm the existence of bridges between the genetics of the brain substrate, epigenetics, behavioral mimicry and finally cultural learning. The cerebral localization of the scriptural abilities, recently discovered in the area known as the Exner area, argues for this body/culture circularity and makes it possible to imagine new research programs covering all the media. The diffusion of digital multisensory media brings a new element to this perspective. Indeed, the intensive use of these media causes an ultrafast impact on the functional architecture of the human brain. This new situation, in which the learning of a new medium and the cognitive impact that its use arouses, coincides with the process of its conception and circulation, confers on designers the role "pro-geneticists".Les sciences cognitives ont apporté des éclairages décisifs dans plusieurs domaines relevant des sciences de la culture.
