Hybrid Communication and Community Resilience: The Adaptation of the Indonesian Citizens’ Radio Community in Jepara

    Get PDF
The rapid development of digital technology has altered people's media consumption patterns, making traditional radio often seem less relevant. However, the sustainability of the amateur radio community demonstrates that conventional media can adapt and still play an important role. This study examines how Radio Antar Penduduk Indonesia (RAPI) Jepara maintains its relevance through a hybrid communication model that combines amateur radio with digital platforms, including WhatsApp, Telegram, and live streaming. The research focus is on how RAPI adapts to media convergence while maintaining its community-based identity. This research uses a qualitative method with an ethnographic approach. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, then thematically analyzed using the Braun & Clarke framework to uncover patterns of meaning that reflect sociocultural dynamics within the community. The analysis was enriched by Everett Rogers' theory of innovation diffusion, which explains the process of technology adoption among RAPI members. The study's results show that amateur radio remains the primary communication medium, especially in emergencies, while digital media serve to enhance efficiency, coordination, and documentation. Innovation at RAPI Jepara takes place through hands-on experience, mentoring, and trust-based interactions. This study contributes to a broader understanding of media convergence and community resilience by affirming that technological adaptation does not necessarily eliminate the collective values or social identities of communities

Adaptive Communication and Religious Inclusivity in the Electoral Defeat of a Long-Term Incumbent

    Get PDF
This study analyzes the unexpected electoral defeat of a three-term incumbent in the 2024 Provincial Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat Daerah (DPRD) race in Central Java’s Electoral District 4, an area historically characterized by strong Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) socioreligious dominance and long-term Partai Kebangkitan Bangsa (PKB) electoral stability. While existing research on Indonesian local politics underscores incumbency advantage rooted in ritual embeddedness, symbolic authority, and organizational loyalty, such explanations are insufficient to capture the challenger’s unprecedented rise. This article addresses that gap by examining the relational, communicative, and symbolic mechanisms that reshaped voter preferences. Using a qualitative case-study design, the research draws on eighteen semi-structured interviews, participant observation in religious and community events, digital-content analysis, and official data from the General Elections Commission (Komisi Pemilihan Umum, KPU). The findings reveal that the incumbent experienced a substantive decline in symbolic authority due to reduced ritual visibility and diminishing emotional proximity, corresponding with an 8–12% decrease in vote share across key polling-station clusters. Conversely, the challenger constructed legitimacy through embodied service practices, adaptive political communication tailored to diverse audiences, and hybrid digital–offline visibility that amplified everyday interactions into credible public narratives. The study concludes that voter behavior in NU-based rural constituencies is undergoing a cultural reorientation in which sincerity, accessibility, and continuous moral presence now outweigh structural party advantages. These insights expand theoretical discussions on personalization, symbolic legitimacy, and relational politics in Indonesia’s decentralized electoral landscape, providing a more nuanced understanding of how challengers can penetrate entrenched socioreligious strongholds

    Get PDF
This study aims to explore the role of charismatic leadership in fostering cultural independence within Islamic boarding schools (pesantren), with a specific focus on Pondok Pesantren Nahdlatut Tholibin Blado Wetan in Probolinggo, Indonesia, under the leadership of KH. Ahsin Ahsanakallah. Islamic boarding schools are crucial in preserving cultural and religious values while adapting to modern challenges; however, their leadership often faces difficulties in balancing tradition and innovation. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with kiai, teachers, and students; participant observation; focus group discussions; and document analysis of pesantren archives and related literature. The data sources combine primary information from internal stakeholders and secondary materials from religious manuscripts and institutional documents. The analysis employed the Miles and Huberman model, consisting of data reduction, data display, and verification, complemented by triangulation to ensure validity. The research findings reveal that Kiai's leadership serves as a central figure in preserving the culture of the Islamic boarding school and guiding the students towards cultural independence. The study highlights that his leadership strategies, including internalising cultural values and mobilising community participation, strengthen the cultural autonomy of the Islamic boarding school. The Kiai acts as a "press agent" for the Islamic boarding school, using his public influence to enhance its visibility and reputation. This study contributes to the understanding of charismatic leadership in religious education and provides recommendations for enhancing leadership training in Islamic boarding schools, thereby preserving cultural heritage

    Get PDF
This study aims to analyze ecotheology as a new direction in the politics and policy of Islamic religious education in Indonesia, particularly in responding to contemporary ecological challenges. This research employs a qualitative approach using library research. Data sources consist of policy documents issued by the Ministry of Religious Affairs, theoretical works on ecotheology, and scholarly articles and books related to Islamic education and ecological studies. Data were collected through a document review and a systematic literature review, focusing on themes of relevance. The data were analyzed using content analysis, which involved data reduction, thematic categorization, and drawing interpretative conclusions. The findings reveal that the integration of ecotheology has begun to appear in national educational policy, as reflected in programs such as Green Theology, forest endowment initiatives, and large-scale tree-planting movements. Challenges persist in the dominance of normative curricula and the limited capacity of educators. Yet, significant opportunities emerge through the roles of pesantren, religious leaders, and faith-based organizations as agents of ecological change. Theoretically, this study expands the discourse on Islamic education by positioning ecotheology as an ethical and political framework for understanding. Practically, the findings guide policymakers and Islamic educational institutions in designing more ecological, transformative, and sustainable learning policies and programs

Disrupted Communication: Understanding How Bullying-Related Anxiety Interferes with Students' Speaking Class Proficiency

    Get PDF
Bullying remains a persistent issue in educational settings, with serious consequences for students’ emotional well-being and academic engagement. This study examines the impact of bullying on students’ willingness to speak, identifies the specific aspects of speaking most affected, and explores the coping strategies employed by victims. A qualitative descriptive case study was conducted with five purposively selected students who had experienced bullying. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews to explore the students’ classroom anxiety in depth. The findings reveal that bullying-induced anxiety significantly reduces students’ willingness to participate in classroom discussions and impairs their verbal communication skills, particularly pronunciation, vocabulary use, and overall confidence. Coping responses varied, with some students relying on self-affirmation while others adopted proactive strategies to manage their anxiety, highlighting the complexity of individual adaptation. This study, though limited to a small sample, provides valuable insights into the nuanced experiences of bullying victims in a higher education context. The results emphasize the importance for English language educators to create supportive classroom environments, implement anxiety-reducing speaking activities, and for institutions to develop anti-bullying initiatives. These implications contribute to both pedagogical practice and policy development aimed at fostering inclusive and resilient learning spaces
