Estimating Seasonal Water Losses from Supply-Demand Analysis Using Satellite-Derived Cropping Patterns: A Case Study

The irrigation systems that use canal command require effective, but not expensive, strategies to quantify annual water requirements and water losses. Field-based traditional methods are all costly and cumbersome to generalize. The current research paper demonstrates how satellite imagery and a crop water need model were applied to estimate the extent of water lost or utilized during the season in the 354-acre command of watercourse number 5AR in the UC Chukhi district, Hyderabad, Pakistan. The CROPWAT model was used to estimate reference evapotranspiration (ET0) and crop evapotranspiration (ETc) using 5 years of meteorological data. Landsat eight images processed in ArcGIS 10.1 provided a classified map of major crops and their acreage. Wheat (24.5 percent of the hectares under cultivation) was the primary crop, followed by mango (17.5 percent), banana (14.0 percent), sugarcane (7.1 percent), and others. 29.6 percent of the hectares were under cultivation, while the remaining 70.4 percent were not. Berry volumetric demands were 117.7 acre-ft (wheat), 81.56 acre-ft (mango), 169.4 acre-ft (banana), 77.4 acre-ft (sugarcane), and 66.38 acre-ft (other crops). The surface water and ground water were 430.3 and 403.04 acre-ft, respectively, and the seasonal supply was 833.45 acre-ft. The seasonal losses incurred were estimated at 279.6 acre-ft, equal to 33.5 percent of the amount of water supplied, 15.0 percent of the conveyance losses, and 18.5 percent of the application losses; application losses exceeded conveyance losses by about 3.5 percentage points. The results suggest that combining CROPWAT and Landsat-based crop mapping with straightforward discharge measurements can offer a feasible, cost-effective, and transferable method for quantifying seasonal water losses and contribute to planning and policy-making for irrigation decisions in canal-command contexts of a similar nature

Local Wisdom and Justice Principles in Musyarakah Mutanaqisah Financing Law at Sharia Bankaltimtara

This study aims to analyze the integration of local wisdom and the principle of substantive justice in the financing practice of Musyarakah Mutanaqisah (MMQ) in Bankaltimtara Syariah, East Kalimantan. The central problem is the empirical-normative gap between formal sharia compliance (Sharia Compliance) and the effectiveness of integrating local wisdom (deliberation, cooperation) as an instrument of social law. Using a socio-legal approach (sociological jurisprudence with a descriptive qualitative method), this study is supported by the triangulation of data from in-depth interviews, observations, and document studies. The theoretical significance confirms that Islamic banking practices operate within a legal pluralist framework, demonstrating that the integration of local wisdom serves as a social mechanism of compliance, thereby strengthening the legitimacy of Islamic law. Results show that the integration of local values has been proven to strengthen customer compliance and realize distributive justice through proportional risk sharing and contract transparency. Substantive justice is achieved through dialogue-based dispute resolution and flexible payment options. Effective MMQ governance requires an adaptive and contextual model that prioritizes the principles of raḥmah and adl, ensuring the well-being of customers (hifz al-nafs and hifz al-māl) and the sustainability of partnerships, going beyond formal compliance

Mangrove degradation is an environmental issue that has a significant impact on the sustainability of coastal areas. Rupat Island, as a coastal region in Riau Province, is experiencing pressure on its mangrove ecosystem due to land use change and weak regulatory control over spatial utilization. This study aims to analyze the degradation of mangrove land on Rupat Island from the perspective of spatial law, emphasizing the alignment between normative regulations and the practical utilization of space at the regional level. The research employs a normative-empirical approach through a review of legislation in spatial planning and forestry, supported by field observations and interviews. The study reveals that the primary issue of mangrove degradation on Rupat Island is not caused by a lack of legal framework, but rather by the failure in the implementation of spatial law, which is reflected in weak supervision, inconsistent application of sanctions, and the lack of synchronization between spatial plans and actual land use practices. Additionally, the research finds that spatial law has not effectively functioned as an instrument for controlling spatial utilization because it is more administratively oriented rather than preventive or repressive against environmental violations. This study contributes by affirming the position of spatial law as a determining factor in mangrove degradation in coastal areas and implies the need for strengthening the enforcement of spatial law through consistent oversight, the imposition of strict sanctions, and the harmonization of central and local policies as prerequisites for sustainable mangrove protection.

Legal Responsibility of Marketplaces in Distributing iQIYI Digital Services and Consumer Protection in Indonesia

This study concludes that the distribution of unauthorized iQIYI digital services through marketplaces creates inherent legal defects, as access remains revocable by the authorized provider, exposing consumers to the risk of unilateral account blocking and potential systematic losses. Accordingly, marketplaces should not be treated as passive intermediaries; their platform control and economic benefits justify the application of Absolute Responsibility for consumer losses arising from such transactions. This research employs a normative legal method, combining statutory and conceptual approaches, with a focus on Indonesian consumer protection law and electronic commerce regulation. The analysis demonstrates that intermediary-based liability models are inadequate to address risks inherent in non-physical and revocable digital services. To operationalize this accountability, marketplaces must ensure accurate risk disclosure, verify seller legitimacy, handle complaints effectively, and implement measurable loss-recovery mechanisms. Finally, regulatory alignment of the Government Regulation on Trade Through Electronic Systems with consumer protection principles, including enforceable algorithmic accountability, remains necessary to strengthen supervision and legal certainty in Indonesia's digital commerce ecosystem
