Contesting Da’wah Authority in Indonesian Mosques and Islamic Organizations

    Get PDF
In the process of segregation, every social institution, including religious ones, experiences both conflict and integration, as well as consensus and contestation. As a religious social institution, the mosque serves as a place for prostration in mahdhah worship and as a center for community development. This article examines two critical issues: first, the shifting dynamics of the mosque’s function as a social institution in Islamic preaching, and second, the negotiation and contestation of Islamic preaching spaces between mosques and other Islamic mass organizations. Employing a qualitative approach, this study conducts an in-depth analysis of primary data sources. Key insights were gathered through participatory observation of behavioral processes and activities within the research context. The research conducted in Kudus revealed several key findings: First, as a site for disseminating Islamic values, mosques serve as a vital medium for employing diverse preaching methods. Second, the overlapping social roles shared with other institutions have led to struggles, shifts, and even takeovers of functions traditionally held by religious organizations—including mosques. Consequently, mosques have transformed into contested arenas for political piety.

    Get PDF
This article aims to analyse the learning outcomes in calculating the qibla direction using the cosine and sine formulas of spherical triangles in the Constitutional Law class of the Faculty of Sharia and Law at UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya during the odd semester of the 2024/2025 academic year. This research employs a mixed-method approach, combining descriptive quantitative and qualitative methods through a case study conducted in the Law class. Data collection was conducted using a questionnaire with a dichotomous scale. The collected data includes information before and after the lecture on calculating the qibla direction, which utilises the cosine and sine formulas of spherical triangles. Furthermore, changes in data before and after the lecture are analysed based on the level of change in the responses to the questionnaires completed by students. Based on the results of the analysis conducted, it was found that many students lacked comprehensive knowledge about the direction of the qibla before the lectures, both from a fiqh and a mathematical perspective. Following the lectures, a significant change occurred in the understanding of this qibla direction, which, mathematically, increased by 65.77%. Meanwhile, in terms of calculation skills for determining the qibla direction, before the lectures were held, only a small fraction of the students stated they could calculate the qibla direction for both areas in Indonesia and outside Indonesia. After the lectures, there was a significant change of 74.32% expressing their ability to calculate the qibla direction for areas in Indonesia, as well as outside Indonesia

    Get PDF
This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of learning media in the form of short videos and e-booklets in improving students' understanding of traffic safety among ninth-grade students at SMP Negeri 7 Samarinda. This study employs a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental method and a pre-test and post-test control group design. Data were collected through comprehension tests administered before and after the intervention, supplemented by interviews, observations, and documentation as primary data. Additionally, secondary data were gathered through relevant literature reviews to strengthen the theoretical foundation and analysis. The population in this study consisted of 871 students, and 60 students were selected as samples using purposive sampling. The samples were divided into two equal groups, the first group using short video media and the second group using e-booklet media in learning. Data were analyzed using the Liliefors normality test and the Independent Samples T-Test. The results of the study indicate that both media contribute positively to improving student understanding. Although the difference between the two media is not statistically significant, the average understanding score of students in the short video group is higher than that of the e-booklet group. Thus, it can be concluded that short video media tends to be more effective in practice in improving students' understanding of traffic safety compared to e-booklets. Therefore, teachers and educators are advised to optimize the use of short videos as an attractive, concise, and interactive learning medium

    Get PDF
This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Snakes and Ladders-based learning media in improving students' mastery of Arabic vocabulary. Traditional methods like textbooks and static visual aids often fail to engage students actively and ensure consistent vocabulary retention. To address this, the study applied a pre-experimental design with a quantitative approach, using a one-group pretest-post-test format. The intervention involved a life-sized Snakes and Ladders board placed on the classroom floor, where students physically moved as game pieces and answered vocabulary prompts at each square—this setup aimed to provide an interactive learning experience, reinforcing vocabulary through repetition and contextual application. The study involved 18 fourth-grade students, with an initial average pretest score of 71.61, which increased to 94.11 in the Post-test, showing an improvement of 22.50 points. A paired t-test revealed a statistically significant improvement (t(17) = -12.144, p < 0.001), with Cohen's d = 3.79, indicating a substantial impact. These results demonstrate that Snakes and Ladders game-based learning can significantly enhance vocabulary acquisition. Incorporating physical movement, peer interaction, and visual stimuli is vital in reinforcing vocabulary retention, offering a promising alternative teaching method to support Arabic language learning at the elementary level
