    optiGAN: a deep learning-based alternative to optical photon tracking in Python-based GATE (10+)

    International audienceAbstract Objective. To accelerate optical photon transport simulations in the GATE medical physics framework using a generative adversarial network (GAN), while ensuring high modeling accuracy. Traditionally, detailed optical Monte Carlo methods have been the gold standard for modeling photon interactions in detectors, but their high computational cost remains a challenge. This study explores the integration of optiGAN, a GAN model into GATE 10, the new Python-based version of the GATE medical physics simulation framework released in November 2024. Approach. The goal of optiGAN is to accelerate optical photon transport simulations while maintaining modeling accuracy. The optiGAN model, based on a GAN architecture, was integrated into GATE 10 as a computationally efficient alternative to traditional optical Monte Carlo simulations. To ensure consistency, optical photon transport modules were implemented in GATE 10 and validated against GATE v9.3 under identical simulation conditions. Subsequently, simulations using full Monte Carlo tracking in GATE 10 were compared to those using GATE 10–optiGAN. Main results. Validation studies confirmed that GATE 10 produces results consistent with GATE v9.3. Simulations using GATE 10–optiGAN showed over 92% similarity to Monte Carlo-based GATE 10 results, based on the Jensen–Shannon distance across multiple photon transport parameters. optiGAN successfully captured multimodal distributions of photon position, direction, and energy at the photodetector face. Simulation time analysis revealed a reduction of approximately 50% in execution time with GATE 10–optiGAN compared to full Monte Carlo simulations. Significance. The study confirms both the fidelity of optical photon transport modeling in GATE 10 and the effective integration of deep learning–based acceleration through optiGAN. This advancement enables large-scale, high-fidelity optical simulations with significantly reduced computational cost, supporting broader applications in medical imaging and detector design

    Social factors contributing to the development of chronic low back pain: a scoping review

    International audienceBackground: Research and clinical practice approaches to chronic low back pain (CLBP) have predominantly focused on biomedical and psychological aspects, often overlooking social influences. The biopsychosocial (BPS) model provides a theoretical framework for conceptualizing CLBP as the outcome of complex interactions between individuals and their environment, offering valuable insights into its progression and informing effective care strategies. This scoping review seeks to identify social factors contributing to CLBP, and to propose a classification system that offers a complementary perspective on social influences.Methods: Eight databases were searched following the JBI methodological guidelines for scoping reviews. The reporting of this review is guided by the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Sources were selected based on the Population-Concept-Context (PCC) framework, specifically targeting studies involving adults with CLBP assessed through the BPS model. The focus was on social factors linked to CLBP evolution in the context of Westernized countries. Two researchers independently screened articles for inclusion, extracted data, and conducted the analysis. The protocol for this review was prospectively registered (DOI: https://doi.org/10.17605/OSF.IO/8DBJV ).Results: Among the 35 articles meeting inclusion criteria, we identified 28 categories of social factors potentially associated with CLBP. These factors were organized into six domains spanning from individual-level influences to broader societal contexts.Conclusions: This review provides a comprehensive overview of social factors influencing CLBP. The proposed classification provides a foundation for future research and may assist clinicians in better understanding the social dimensions of chronic pain, ultimately contributing to the development of more personalised interventions tailored to patients' social and life contexts

    Cysteine Redox State Governs the Condensation Pathway of Hendra Virus W Protein and Differentially Impacts Type I IFN and NF-κB signaling

    The Hendra and Nipah viruses (HeV and NiV) are zoonotic biosafety level-4 pathogens belonging to theParamyxoviridae family. We previously showed that their W protein, a key player in the evasion of the hostantiviral response, forms highly flexible, curved fibrils in vitro. Here, we show that the cysteine oxidationstate acts as a molecular switch controlling the formation of either amorphous aggregates or flexible fibrils,and that residues 2 to 29 are essential for fibrillation. We also uncover that the HeV W protein (WHeV) canalso self-assemble in cellula. WHeV forms distinct types of nuclear condensates that exhibit differentdependencies on the cysteine redox-state. While deletion of residues 2-29 prevents formation of nuclearfilaments, cysteine-to-serine substitution mainly impairs the formation of non-filamentous condensates.Both infection and WHeV ectopic expression trigger oxidative stress presumably favorable to WHeVcondensation. Finally, we show that impaired ability to form redox-sensitive, non-filamentous condensatesis associated with a reduced W ability to inhibit the NF-κB pathway, while it conversely enhances W abilityto repress the interferon response pathway

    International audienceCe livre offre une réflexion inédite sur le rôle des femmes dans la production littéraire du Moyen Âge et de la Renaissance, en s’interrogeant sur le lectorat d’un genre à succès, la nouvelle, qui est souvent présentée comme adressée à un public féminin dans les prologues et les péritextes des recueils. Les contributions analysent les fondements de cette destination affichée (simple topos ? indice d’une réception féminine attestable ?). Elles explorent un ensemble d’oeuvres narratives variées appartenant à différentes aires linguistiques européennes : Italie, France, Espagne, Allemagne. En empruntant aux outils de l’histoire littéraire, de la philologie et de l’histoire du livre, les études posent un regard neuf sur la nouvelle européenne et mettent en évidence le rôle des femmes dans son essor, en tant que lectrices, autrices et objets de débats.     Conceptualisation et test empirique de l’expérience hôtelière digitalisée

    The hotel industry is undergoing major transformations because of changing customer expectations and technological advances. Historically focused on human service and quality of welcome, it must now contend with the increasing digitization of interactions and the emergence of new models such as online booking platforms. This research aims to understand how digital technologies, and more specifically gamification, can improve the customer experience while preserving the very essence of hospitality. A first major contribution of this thesis lies in the identification of anticipation as an essential phase of the customer journey. Even before they arrive, customers form expectations based on their online research and the digital content of hotels. This study highlights that digital technologies make it possible to better align these expectations with the actual experience on site, thus reducing the risk of dissatisfaction. We propose an integrative framework of the digitized hotel experience that studies the role of digital technologies (i.e., enabling and disruptive technologies), digital sources of value creation (i.e., individualization, automation and care), psychological mechanisms of consumers (i.e., convenience, relevance, automation, economy) and those of hotel professionals (i.e., autonomy, competence, relationship and creativity), the digitized hotel experience (i.e., stages of the customer journey and dimensions of the experience) and the psychological responses of the consumer (i.e., loyalty, satisfaction, willingness to pay and word of mouth). To conceptualize the digitized hotel experience, we adopted a qualitative approach based on in-depth interviews with 22 hotel professionals and 18 customers to identify their expectations and perceptions of digital innovations. Another fundamental contribution of this research is the development of the M-DER model, which measures the influence of perceived gamification on the digitized hotel experience. The study shows that gamification can strengthen engagement through points, badges, and rewards systems. It also promotes the creation of positive emotions, which contributes to customers' attachment to the hotel brand. The results of this thesis confirm that gamification works particularly well when the elements are intuitive and aesthetic, rather than overly complex. A simple and engaging interface captures attention better and promotes a positive experience. To test our hypotheses, a quantitative study was then carried out on a fictitious gamified hotel website, developed specifically for the research, with 226 participants. The results show that the positive emotions generated by gamification directly influence the perception of the hotel experience and that this approach can improve customers' attachment to a brand. Although digitization and gamification offer many opportunities, this research also warns against excessive dematerialization of the customer experience. Human interaction remains a fundamental pillar of hospitality. The study reveals that some customers appreciate the autonomy offered by digital tools, such as online check-in or virtual assistants, while others seek authentic and personalized human contact. The challenge for hoteliers is therefore to find a balance between technological innovation and human interaction, integrating digital tools as complements and not as substitutes for human service. Based on this work, several recommendations can be made for hoteliers.L’industrie hôtelière connaît des transformations majeures sous l’effet de l’évolution des attentes des clients et des avancées technologiques. Historiquement axée sur le service humain et la qualité d’accueil, elle doit aujourd’hui composer avec la digitalisation croissante des interactions et l’émergence de nouveaux modèles comme les plateformes de réservation en ligne. Cette recherche vise à comprendre comment les technologies numériques, et plus spécifiquement la gamification, peuvent améliorer l’expérience client tout en préservant l’essence même de l’hospitalité. Un premier apport majeur de cette thèse réside dans l’identification de l’anticipation en tant que phase essentielle du parcours client. Avant même leur arrivée, les clients se forment des attentes basées sur leurs recherches en ligne et les contenus numériques des hôtels. Cette étude souligne que les technologies numériques permettent de mieux aligner ces attentes avec l’expérience réelle vécue sur place, réduisant ainsi le risque d’insatisfaction. Nous proposons un cadre intégrateur de l’expérience hôtelière digitalisée qui étudie le rôle des technologies numériques (i.e., technologies habilitantes et disruptives), des sources numériques de création de valeur (i.e., individualisation, automatisation et soin), des mécanismes psychologiques des consommateurs (i.e., commodité, pertinence, automatisation, économie) et ceux des professionnels de l’hôtellerie (i.e., autonomie, compétence, relation et créativité), de l’expérience hotellière digitalisée (i.e., étapes du parcours client et dimensions de l’expérience) et des réponses psychologiques du consommateur (i.e., fidélisation, satisfaction, volonté à payer et bouche-à-oreille). Pour conceptualiser l’expérience hôtelière digitalisée, nous avons adopté une approche qualitative basée sur des entretiens approfondis menée auprès de 22 professionnels de l’hôtellerie et 18 clients afin d’identifier leurs attentes et leurs perceptions des innovations digitales. Un autre apport fondamental de cette recherche est le développement du modèle M-DER, permettant de mesurer l’influence de la gamification perçue sur l’expérience hôtelière digitalisée. L’étude montre que la gamification peut renforcer l’engagement grâce à des systèmes de points, de badges et de récompenses. Elle favorise également la création d’émotions positives, ce qui contribue à l’attachement des clients à la marque hôtelière. Les résultats de cette thèse confirment que la gamification fonctionne particulièrement bien lorsque les éléments sont intuitifs et esthétiques, plutôt que trop complexes. Une interface simple et engageante capte mieux l’attention et favorise une expérience positive. Pour tester nos hypothèses, une étude quantitative a ensuite été réalisée sur un site web hôtelier fictif gamifié, développé spécifiquement pour la recherche, avec 226 participants. Les résultats montrent que les émotions positives générées par la gamification influencent directement la perception de l’expérience hôtelière et que cette approche peut améliorer l’attachement des clients à une marque. Bien que la digitalisation et la gamification offrent de nombreuses opportunités, cette recherche met également en garde contre une dématérialisation excessive de l’expérience client. L’interaction humaine reste un pilier fondamental de l’hospitalité. L’étude révèle que certains clients apprécient l’autonomie offerte par les outils digitaux, tels que le check-in en ligne ou les assistants virtuels, tandis que d’autres recherchent un contact humain authentique et personnalisé. L’enjeu pour les hôteliers est donc de trouver un équilibre entre innovation technologique et interactions humaines, en intégrant les outils numériques comme des compléments et non comme des substituts au service humain.
