1989 in the East. Between Order and Subversion
April 15, 2026 by RoutledgeInternational audience1989 in the East revisits the processes that led to the collapse of communist regimes in Central and Eastern Europe, the Balkans and the USSR. This disintegration appeared to be the result of complex mobilisations where the repertoires of action, the institutional and non-institutional ties, the ideological preferences, and the identities of the actors, including the most official ones, have been profoundly changed. The modes of contestation have gone from a self-limited subversion of established institutions, with some forms of collaboration with the regime, to much clearer and more radical forms of head-on opposition. Opposition movements developed according to rhythms and modalities specific to each country, sometimes to each social sphere. Social mobilisations, institutional transformations (both visible and less visible), and the emergence of new actors in all social spheres are therefore central issues in this book.This book, based on rich empirical material, will be of interest to specialists in the region, as well as, more generally, to students of regime change and collapse, political crises, social movements, authoritarian regimes, and the forms of mobilisation that develop within them

Nous - deux chercheurs et une architecte cartographe - avons expérimenté avec K. un itinéraire en marchant centré sur sa respiration et son expérience ordinaire de l’air, en nous donnant l’objectif suivant : produire une cartographie qui non seulement exprime l’expérience de l’itinéraire, mais aussi constitue un outil réflexif et critique des espaces publics contemporain
Austérité sanitaire Face à l’érosion de l’économie fondamentale dans les espaces délaissés
International audienceSmall and medium-sized cities have long been sidelined in urban research. However,they have recently come to the forefront of media, political and academic debate. Thenotion of “left-behind places” questions the rise of territorial inequalities that lead tothe marginalisation of territories previously integrated into national dynamics, but alsothe political and social consequences of these developments.The article presents two cities that can be considered as left-behind: Roanne, amedium-sized city of 34,000 inhabitants, and La Grand-Combe, a small town of5,000 inhabitants. In a French context where the withdrawal of the state is perceptiblein a number of spheres of public action, the article is based on the analysis of a keysector of the “fundamental economy”: healthcare. The study of the evolution of thissector allows us to refine the analysis of the austerity policies implemented in France.These policies are characterised less by spectacular cuts in funding than by a slowerosion of the workforce, an unequal distribution of resources and a concentration ofsupply that affects access to care.Longtemps restées à la marge de la recherche urbaine, les villes petites et moyennesse sont récemment imposées dans les débats médiatiques, politiques et académiques.La notion d’« espaces délaissés » permet d’interroger la montée des inégalitésterritoriales qui conduisent à la marginalisation de territoires auparavant intégrés dansles dynamiques nationales, mais aussi les conséquences politiques et sociales de cesévolutions.L’article présente deux villes en déclin : Roanne, une ville moyenne de 34 000 habitantset La Grand-Combe, une petite ville de moins de 5 000 habitants. Dans un contextefrançais où le retrait de l’État est perceptible dans un ensemble de sphères de l’actionpublique, ce texte s’appuie sur l’analyse d’un secteur clé de l’« économiefondamentale » : la santé. L’étude des évolutions de ce secteur permet d’affiner celledes politiques d’austérité mises en oeuvre en France. Celles-ci se caractérisent moinspar des coupes spectaculaires dans les dotations que par une lente érosion deseffectifs, une inégale répartition des ressources, et une concentration de l’offre quiaffecte l’accès aux soins
Local specialists' experience and skills in animal behaviour studies: insights from wild chimpanzee field assistants
International audienceThe study of wild animal behaviour and cognition has greatly benefited from the foundational work of local specialists (LSs), particularly field assistants. In primate research, long-term studies rely on accurate identification and tracking of individuals—a skill often honed by LSs and passed on to international specialists (ISs). Despite growing recognition in publications, LSs' scientific contributions often remain undervalued. Here, we show that LSs at the Budongo Conservation Field Station (Uganda) reliably extract acoustic information (caller identity, sex and age, call components and production context) from long-distance pant hoot calls produced by wild chimpanzees. Importantly, LSs significantly outperform ISs at identifying individuals (LS accuracy = 50% (95% confidence interval (CI): 45–56%); IS accuracy = 8% (95% CI: 5–11%)), an important skill for recognizing and locating individuals in dense forests. LSs' performance was positively associated with duration of working experience. Given the limited field time of ISs (typically 1–2 years), LSs' expertise and longer commitment (mean 16.75 years) represent an essential yet underacknowledged scientific resource. Our study highlights LSs' critical role in ethological research—not only enhancing skills and data quality, but also potentially helping address both ethical (e.g. community involvement) and environmental (e.g. travel carbon footprint) challenges linked to fieldwork in remote locations
Impact of the Numerical Aperture on the Dosimetry Performances of Low‐OH Pure Silica‐Core Optical Fibers
International audienceThis study investigates the influence of pre‐irradiation and numerical aperture (NA) on radiation‐induced luminescence (RIL) and radiation‐induced attenuation (RIA) of pure silica core (PSC) multimode (MM) optical fibers (OFs) under steady state X‐rays (40 keV mean energy‐fluence). The RIL properties of MM PSC OFs with identical core compositions and geometries but having different NAs (0.12, 0.15, and 0.22) have been characterized as well as the influence of pre‐irradiation doses at 250 kGy, 1 and 2 MGy. RIL were measured under dose rates varying from 40 mGy(SiO 2 )/s to 1.1 Gy/s. RIL spectral analysis shows two main emission bands correlated to Oxygen Deficient Centers (ODC(II), ∼460 nm) and NonBridging Oxygen Hole Centers (NBOHC, ∼650 nm). The spatial distribution of NBOHC, confined in the fiber core, has been measured through confocal photoluminescence microscopy. RIA was carried out up to a total ionizing dose (TID) up to 200 kGy and no major effect of NAs was observed. RIL intensity increases with both NA and pre‐irradiation dose due to defect generation within the PSC MM optical fiber. Based on these results, the potential of these PSC MM fibers to serve as radiation sensitive probes or as transport fibers for dosimetry systems is discussed
Pulsed X‐Ray Radiation Responses of Single‐Mode and Multimode Fluorine‐Doped Optical Fibers
International audienceIn this study, we compare the pulsed X‐ray radiation responses of standard, radiation‐tolerant optical fibers with those of super‐hard, radiation‐resistant multimode (MM‐SRH) and single‐mode (SM‐SRH) fluorine‐doped optical fibers. Real‐time measurements of radiation‐induced attenuation (RIA) spectra were conducted in the spectral range of 0.6 to 3.0 eV (400–2000 nm), both at room temperature and at liquid nitrogen temperature, to characterize the nature of metastable defects, quickly recombining after the short (a few tens of ns) irradiation pulse. Additionally, we monitored the RIA kinetics at the two telecommunication wavelengths, 1550 and 1310 nm, from the microsecond timescale to several hundreds of seconds. MM‐SRH fibers exhibit superior light transmission efficiency following the X‐ray irradiation pulse, better than the other fiber compositions and the one expected from current literature on transient responses of silica‐based optical fibers. Possible explanation of this radiation hardness could be the very high level F‐doping distribution in this graded‐index optical fiber, demonstrating how the RIA in optical fibers strongly depends on fiber composition and manufacturing parameters
