Dynamical analysis and numerical simulation of a reaction-diffusion model for microbial decomposition of organic matter in 3D soil structure

    No full text
Microbial decomposition of organic matter in soil is a fundamental process in the global carbon cycle, directly influencing soil health, fertility, and greenhouse gas emissions. This paper presents a dynamic analysis and numerical simulation of a reaction-diffusion model that describes microbial decomposition of organic matter within a three dimensional soil structure. We investigate the interactions between {Microbial Biomass} (MB) and organic substrates, as well as the diffusion of various compounds through the soil matrix, using nonlinear parabolic partial differential equations. Our study provides proofs for the existence and uniqueness of solutions, as well as an analysis of asymptotic behavior. Notably, our investigation reveals the presence of a global attractor, where any solution, regardless of initial conditions, tends to converge. To illustrate the practical implications of our findings, we have developed a numerical tool to simulate the long-term behavior of the system with reasonable computational expense. This tool provides a visual proof of the global attractor for a validated set of biological parameters in a real sandy loam soil sample captured using 3D tomography imagery

Elevated-Mn ChemCam targets illuminating Mn redox cycling and diagenesis in the Bradbury Rise, Gale Crater, Mars

International audienceManganese plays a crucial role as a paleo-environmental and geological indicator due to its sensitivity to redox potential and pH variations in the environment. On Earth, the association between the rise of atmospheric oxygen during the Great Oxidation Event and the presence of Mn in the sedimentary rock record underscores its significance. In this study, we reexamined ChemCam targets from the first 600 sols of the Mars Science Laboratory mission, focusing on identifying instances of above-average Mn within these targets. These elevated-Mn targets were categorized into distinct geologic classes, revealing a pattern linking heightened Mn levels with diagenetically altered materials, such as calcium-sulfate veins and concretions, as well as clay minerals within the same targets, indicating a compelling relationship between Mn enrichment and diagenetic processes. High concentrations of Mn were observed in chemically altered targets, suggesting the occurrence of multiple fluid events: the first to alter the material and the second to deposit Mn. The observed patterns suggest multiple diagenetic events and redox cycling that facilitated the deposition and transport of Mn subsequent to the initial dissolution of basaltic materials. This research sheds light on the complexity of martian diagenetic processes and their implications for the planet’s environmental evolution

Multilayer MEG source modelling enables depth-resolved inference across all six cortical laminae in humans

    No full text
Neural dynamics at the laminar level are critical for cortical computation. However, in humans, non-invasive methods to probe such dynamics have been limited to coarse distinctions between deep and superficial layers. Here, we demonstrate that under certain conditions, magnetoencephalography (MEG) can achieve laminar inference by localizing sources at the level of individual cortical laminae. Using a multilayer source reconstruction approach, we systematically assess the limits of MEG depth resolution, and show that laminar precision is achievable under realistic signal-to-noise ratios and co-registration accuracy. We show that accurate laminar inference depends critically on aligning forward model dipole orientations with true cortical column orientations, and that regional variations in cortical anatomy influence reconstruction fidelity. We then apply this approach to empirical data from three independent datasets, revealing the expected laminar patterns of activity during event-related fields in primary visual, somatosensory, and motor cortices. These findings position MEG as a powerful tool for investigating lamina-specific neural dynamics in cognition and behavior, and offer new opportunities to bridge invasive electrophysiology and human neuroimaging

    No full text

International audienceTraining in fieldwork occupies an important place in social science and geography curricula. However, gender relations in the fieldwork relationship appear to be an element that is still absent from field training, whether in textbooks, courses or exchanges with various supervisors. By placing the question of the female researcher's gender at the center of our thinking, we aim to shed light on the implicit assumptions that still surround these issues, and to show how gender can be a risk factor, exposing the female researcher to uncomfortable or even dangerous situations, but also a form of asset or an element that can be played to advantage when gathering data.

The two-step scenario of the Messinian Crisis (Clauzon et al. , 1996): a specification supported by new data

    No full text
International audienceMany papers refer in a revised way to the two-step scenario of the Messinian Crisis conceived by Clauzon et al. (1996). The present paper recalls the basis for the two-step scenario and discrepancies with the later modified version, completed by new data supported by extensive micropaleontological analyses. Our interpretation of the Sicilian Eraclea Minoa section as belonging to a peripheral basin is the centre of the debate. We show the great amplitude of fluvial erosion during the peak of the crisis, which for the Rhône River, exceeded 400 km upstream of the present shoreline. Based on dinoflagellate cysts, we also recall the reasons for supporting the occurrence of three successive Lago Mare episodes of two different origins. The first and third episodes constitute phases of high sea-level exchanges between the Mediterranean and the Paratethys respectively just before the onset of paroxysm and after it. The second episode is due to overflowing Paratethyan waters from the Aegean Basin just before the end of paroxysm. Similarly, the demonstration of the marine reflooding of the Mediterranean Basin prior to the Zanclean is repeated. We emphasize dissimilarity between basins, focussing in particular on those, isolated or perched ones, which were continuously filled by waters during the desiccation phase: western part of the Alboran Sea and southeastern part of the Levantine Basin (marine waters), Apennine Foredeep (fresh waters), and Aegean Basin (brackish waters). The Apennine Foredeep cannot be the reference for the entire Mediterranean with respect to its evolution during the crisis. During the crisis, water exchanges between the Aegean Basin and the Eastern Paratethys (Dacic Basin, Black Sea) were impossible through the Marmara region because of the development of two opposed fluvial networks. Such exchanges existed thanks to a gateway that was probably located within the Balkans. Investigations around the Levantine Basin point to areas submitted to fluvial erosion during the crisis paroxysm and nearby areas, which might have received marine waters from the Red Sea. Much information is still to be discovered and that more progress is still needed in order to fully decipher this outstanding event.

Locally 0\aleph_0-categorical theories and locally Roelcke precompact groups

    No full text
International audienceIt is well-known that Polish Roelcke precompact groups are the groups that can be represented as automorphism groups of 0\aleph_0-categorical structures in continuous logic and that there is a precise correspondence between properties of the group and properties of the structure. The goal of this paper is to extend this correspondence to the classes of locally Roelcke precompact groups and locally 0\aleph_0-categorical structures, the latter of which we define here. We characterise locally Roelcke precompact groups in terms of their isometric actions. We define locally 0\aleph_0-categorical theories and structures, prove an appropriate version of the Ryll-Nardzewski theorem, and identify the Polish locally Roelcke precompact groups as the automorphism groups of such structures. In all locally 0\aleph_0-categorical structures, there is a definable metric, which we call localising, and which captures the coarse geometric structure of the corresponding automorphism group. We show that two locally 0\aleph_0-categorical structures are bi-interpretable if and only if their automorphism groups are isomorphic. Finally, we show that (the unit ball of) a Banach space is 0\aleph_0-categorical if and only if the corresponding affine space is locally 0\aleph_0-categorical (as a metric space)
