Existence and Regularity of Minimizers for a Plateau Approximation Problem

    No full text
In this paper, we study the functional introduced by the author in collaboration with Bonnivard, Bretin, and Lemenant, which is designed to approximate Plateau’s problem. We establish the existence of a minimizer and prove its Hölder regularity. Our results may be viewed as a generalization to higher-dimensional surfaces of the one-dimensional work of Bonnivard, Lemenant, and Millot on the approximation of the Steiner problem

South Caucasus greening and Neolithisation: What happened 8200 years ago?

    No full text
International audienceIn the South Caucasus, located north of the Fertile Crescent and between Black and Caspian Seas, the Neolithic way of life emerged relatively late, around 6000 BCE (8000 cal BP). This delay, compared with regions such as Anatolia or the Kopet Dag, has long been discussed by archaeologists and generally attributed to geographical or technical constraints. Climate has also been considered a key factor, particularly the 8.2 ka event, which is often linked to the spread of farming and herding from the Fertile Crescent into neighbouring regions. This event is believed to have triggered a transition from hunter-gathering to agropastoralism. However, its direct impact on the South Caucasus remains debated. Recent palaeoenvironmental studies indicate that the region underwent a major ecological transformation around 8200 cal BP, coinciding with the Early–Middle Holocene Transition. This period was characterised by increased precipitation. As a result, vegetation expanded, particularly grasslands dominated by Poaceae, which provided favourable conditions for livestock grazing and fodder production. Unlike the abrupt 8.2 ka event, this longer-term shift significantly reshaped the environment of the South Caucasus. This review argues that it was not the short-term climatic anomaly but rather the sustained increase in precipitation during the Early–Middle Holocene Transition that created the conditions necessary for the emergence of the Caucasian Neolithic. The expansion of vegetation and natural resources provided an ecological basis for the gradual adoption of agriculture and herding, ultimately leading to the development of an agropastoral system in the region

THE EARLIEST RECORD FOR HONEYGUIDES (AVES: INDICATORIDAE), FROM THE EARLY PLIOCENE OF SOUTH AFRICA

    No full text
International audienceTwo new species of honeyguides (Indicatoridae) are described from the Lower Pliocene Upper Varswater Formation at Langebaanweg, South Africa. One of these species is referred to the genus Indicator, as Indicator sp. (taxon A), and comparable in size to the Lesser Honeyguide (I. minor). It is represented by a partial coracoid as well as 12 humeri, eight carpometacarpi, and two tarsometatarsi. The second species is slightly smaller than the Least Honeyguide (I. exilis). It is known from a fragmentary proximal humerus, a carpometacarpus and two tarsometatarsi, and cannot be referred to a particular genus of modern Indicatoridae, hence it is referred to Indicatoridae indet. (taxon B). Both species form the as yet earliest record of honeyguides in Africa and the world, and confirm the presence of woodland with mature trees suitable for cavity-nesting species at Langebaanweg during the Early Pliocene

Preoperative flexion contracture does not impair outcomes or early revision rates following robotic total knee arthroplasty with functional alignment

International audienceAbstract Purpose Preoperative flexion contracture remains a challenging deformity in total knee arthroplasty (TKA). This study aimed to evaluate whether the presence of preoperative flexion contracture influences outcomes and early revision rates following robotic‐assisted TKA performed with functional alignment (FA) principles. Methods This retrospective comparative study analysed 190 patients who underwent robotic‐assisted TKA using a computed tomography‐based FA strategy. Patients were grouped based on intraoperative measurement of flexion contracture: ≥10° (study group; 43 patients) and <10° (control group; 147 patients). Clinical outcomes, intraoperative data, and early revision rates were assessed at a minimum 24‐month follow‐up. Results The study group exhibited significantly more varus alignment intraoperatively and required greater lateral tibial and posterior medial femoral resections. Preoperative knee flexion was lower in the contracture group (110° vs. 120°, p = 0.0018), and postoperative flexion remained slightly reduced (120° vs. 130°, p = 0.05). Flexion contracture at follow‐up was 1° in the study group versus 0° in controls ( p = 0.04). However, no significant differences were observed in Knee Society Scores, Forgotten Joint Score, Kujala score, or early revision rates. All‐cause revision rates were similar (97.67% vs. 98.64%, p = 0.66), with a hazard ratio of 1.85 (95% CI: 0.12–27.72). Aseptic survivorship was 100% in the contracture group versus 99.32% in controls ( p = 0.59). Conclusion Patients with preoperative flexion contracture ≥ 10° achieved comparable mid‐term outcomes and early survivorship to those without contracture following robotic‐assisted TKA using FA. These findings support FA as a reliable strategy to manage complex deformities without the need for soft tissue releases. Level of Evidence Level III

Tectonic setting and petrogenesis of Alibori and Yarra plutons in the Kandi Shear Zone, Pan-African Dahomeyide orogen (Northern Benin Republic)

International audienceThe Alibori and Yarra plutons, located in the Sinende area, are spatially associated with the Kandi shear zone in the Pan-African Dahomeyide orogenic belt of northern Benin. This study aims to characterize the tectonic setting and magmatic processes of these plutons. The methodological approach integrates structural investigations of the host rocks, and petrographic, U-Pb dating and whole-rock geochemical analyses of igneous rocks. The Alibori pluton is formed of sheared diorite and granodiorite while the Yarra pluton consists of porphyritic, coarsegrained biotite and biotite-hornblende granites with magmatic texture. The Alibori pluton yielded a U-Pb zircon age of 661 ± 1.66 Ma, interpreted as the emplacement age. Geochemical investigations reveal that the igneous rocks of the Alibori and Yarra plutons are metaluminous. The Alibori pluton is magnesian, calcic to calcalkalic, while the Yarra pluton belongs to the ferroan, alkali-calcic, strongly potassic series. Trace and rare earth elements (REE) investigations reveal that the Alibori igneous rocks originate from mantle magma with crustal contamination in a forearc environment, while the Yarra granitoids originate from the mixing and mingling of crustal and mantle magmas in a post-collision setting. The combination of these data and the existing data suggest that the magmatic event in the Sinende area can be divided into two episodes, which can be temporally located relative to the main regional shearing. The first one emplaced during the convergent tectonism is calcic to calk-alkalic (c. 660Ma) and derived from mantle magma with crustal contamination is interpreted as preshearing magmatism. The second one is alkali-calcic strongly potassic (c. 545 Ma) and intruded during the Kandi shearing activity towards the waning stage of the orogeny and involving both crustal and mantle magmas.</div

Le XXe siècle de Nuto Revelli : pratiques, réseaux, mémoires, témoignages

Nuto Revelli (1919–2004) was an Italian author from Cuneo (Piedmont) who drew inspiration from his experiences as an officer in Russia, as a “Partigiano” during the Second World War, and later from recording the stories of peasants in the Cuneo area. He died in 2004, leaving behind a complex and diverse body of work. From diaries to oral account collections, all his books converge on a moral and political imperative: to pass on the memory of wars and the marginalised populations of his region. The issue titled The 20th Century of Nuto Revelli: Practices, Networks, Memory, Testimonies aims to examine Nuto Revelli’s work in light of the experiences, encounters and intentions that shaped the author’s intellectual and literary journey, as well as his interviewing, collecting, translating and transcribing methods. The specificity of the dossier lies in its ambition to situate Revelli within the history of knowledge from the post-war period to the 2000s. It also aims to methodologically analyse both the intellectual traditions that influenced Revelli’s development of his laboratory tools and the philological examination of his work, including both written and oral sources.
