    Clinical Importance of Agrya Ausadha Aragvadha in the Management of Vicharchika: A Pharmacological Review

    In Ayurvedic clinical practice, Agrya ausadha are the first drug of choice for treatment of various diseases. Aragvadha, as an Agrya ausadha, is employed for its therapeutic benefits in both internal and external applications. It is notably used for Mridu virechana (mild purgation) and as a topical remedy for various types of Kustha. In Ayurvedic dermatology kustha has been taken as supreme word for all skin diseases. Vicharchika, classified as a Kshudra Kustha, is treated through the dual principles of Sodhana (purification) and Samana Chikitsa (pacification). The Majja (pulp) of Aragvadha is utilized for internal Sodhana therapy, while the leaves are applied externally as a paste for Samana Chikitsa. Preliminary findings indicate that Aragvadha meets the criteria for an ideal drug as per classical Ayurveda, given its accessibility (Bahuta), versatility in formulations (Anekvidhkalpana), and effectiveness (Yogatyam). Aragvadha, through its varied formulations, plays a crucial role in the Ayurvedic management of Vicharchika. Its use aligns with the principles of Sodhana and Samana Chikitsa, offering a comprehensive approach to treating this skin disorder. The study highlights the clinical significance of different parts of Aragvadha and supports its continued use in Ayurvedic dermatological practice

    Assessing the Efficacy of Sneha Pottanam (Bundle Application) in Managing Vatha Related Diseases in Children

    The Siddha system of medicine offers a holistic approach that addresses not only physical ailments but also the spiritual well-being of individuals. It classifies 4,448 types of diseases and categorizes treatments into two types: internal and external medicines. Pottanam is one of the treatment methods described by Siddhar Therayar in his text ‘Therayar Tharu’. Managing special needs children has become a significant challenge today. Sneha Pottanam, an external therapy mentioned in ‘Pillaipini Vagadam - Part 2’, is particularly used for managing Vatha-related disorders in pediatric cases. Aim & Objective: The aim of this review is to elaborate the efficacy of Pottanam (bundle application) and to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of Sneha Pottanam, as described in ‘Pillaipini Vagadam – Part 2’, for the management of Vatha-related diseases through a comprehensive literature review. Materials & Methods: The review was conducted through Siddha literature, including ‘Pillaipini Vagadam – Part 2’, ‘Gunapadam’, ‘Pathartha Gunachinthamani’, the ‘Manual of Siddha External Therapy’, as well as research articles from Google Scholar and PubMed. Discussion: Siddha literature describes a wide range of external therapies, with Pottanam being a simple yet effective treatment for managing spasticity in Vatha-related diseases and balancing the three humors. This therapy rejuvenates the body and stimulates nerve endings. The ingredients in Sneha Pottanam act intradermally, making it an excellent remedy for special needs children by enhancing the function of motor and sensory receptors. Conclusion: The pharmacological properties and phytocomponents of Sneha Pottanam are highly effective in managing spasticity in special children and balancing the elevated Vatha humor. This review supports further studies on the ingredients of Sneha Pottanam, which could aid in the management of neurological disorders caused by imbalances in the body\u27s three humors

    A Comparative Clinical Evaluation of Janu Basti with and Without Upnaha in Janu Sandhigata Vata (Osteoarthritis of Knee)

    Sandhigata Vata is the commonest form of musculoarticular disorder. It comes under eighty Nanatmaja Vata Vyadhi which mainly occurs due to Dhatukshaya in Vriddhavasta. Janu Sandhi is the major bearing joint in the body it’s more subjected to wear and tear. Sandhi comes under Madhayam Roga Marga where Vata gets localized in Sandhi thereafter Shleshaka Kapha Kshaya and cause symptoms like Shoola, Shotha, Akunchana Prasarana Vedana, Vatapurna Driti Sparsha which limits everyday activities such as walking, sitting and standing etc thus making patient disable to do daily activities. In the Shastras, Acharya Sushruta has firstly given the method of treatment such as Snehana, Upnaha, Agnikarma, Bandhana, Mardana. Upnaha is a type of Sagni and Niragni Swedana, which relieves stiffness, heaviness, cold and induces sweat. Janu Basti is type of Bahya Snehana and Swedana. It provides strength to the knee muscle, joints, and improves function of knee joint. In this study 50 patients having the complaints of osteoarthritis were randomly divided into 2 groups in Group A patients were treated with Janu Basti with Upnaha and in Group B were treated with only Janu Basti. The data shows that Janu Basti along with Upnaha i.e., group A has provided better relief in the disease of Sandhigata Vata

    Management of Sandhivata with special reference to Osteoarthritis

    Sandhivata is Vataja nanatmaja Vyadhi and one of the common types of Vatavyadhi. It is most commonly witnessed in elderly patient more than 50 years due to Dhatukshaya. Females are more prone to Sandhivata due to hormonal imbalance after menopause. Since it is located in Marma sthana it is Kashtasadya. In this case study Upanaha with Goduma churana, Rasna churna, Kottumchukkadu churna, and Janu Basti with Ksheerabala taila, and Vyadhishardoola guggulu is used as Shamanayoga to manage Sandhivata. As a result observed that subject had significant relief in all cardinal symptoms. In this case study Godumadi Churna is used for Upanaha, Ksheerabala Taila used for Janu basti and Vyadhishardoola Guggulu is used as Shamanayoga for the management of Janusandhigata Vata. It is observed that all the symptoms are reduced and patient feels significant relief. This study can be taken for the further study in large sample size with different variety of patient to look over the results

    Analytical Profile of Punarnavadi Ghrita- An Ayurvedic Formulation

    Punarnavadi Ghrita, a traditional Ayurvedic formulation, is used in the management of Madatyaya (alcoholism). It comprises Punarnava (Boerhaavia diffusa), Yashtimadhu (Glycyrrhiza glabra), Godugdha (cow\u27s milk), and Goghrita (cow\u27s ghee). The present study focuses on the analysis of this Ghrita as per the general guidelines for drug development of Ayurvedic formulations. This formulation was prepared following the general procedure of Bhaishajya Kalpana, ensuring the authenticity and quality of raw ingredients through rigorous organoleptic assessment. Physicochemical analyses were conducted to determine parameters such as optical rotation, iodine value, saponification value, specific gravity, and free fatty acid content. Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of alkaloids, phenols, and terpenoids. HPTLC analysis at 254nm and 366nm wavelengths identified multiple peaks, indicating a complex profile of active compounds. Heavy metal, pesticide residue, and microbial contamination tests confirmed the safety of the formulation, with no harmful contaminants detected. The findings offer a comprehensive profile of Punarnavadi Ghrita, establishing quality benchmarks for its therapeutic use and providing a reference standard for future research. This study underscores the formulation\u27s potential in replenish Ojadhatu and mitigate the adverse effects of alcoholism, aligning with ancient Ayurvedic wisdom

    Formulation and Evaluation of Herbal Anti-Acne Gel Containing Extracts of Tabernaemontana Divaricata and Psidium Guajava

    This study aims to formulate a herbal anti-acne gel containing extracts of Psidium Guajava and Tabernaemontana Divaricata and to characterize the formulated gel for its physicochemical properties. The extraction method used was maceration and Continuous hot extraction. The presence of diverse phyto-constituents in the obtained extracts was also determined. Three formulations containing the extracts of Psidium Guajava and Tabernaemontana Divaricata were prepared using 1% Carbopol 940 as a gelling agent. Parameters like colour, odour ,homogeneity, phase separation, consistency, washability, pH, viscosity, spreadability and anti-microbial activity were evaluated. The formulated gels were odourless, uniform, consistent, without lumps and washable. It was found that pH of the prepared formulations was closer to skin, had good viscosity and spreadability. The anti- microbial activity of the prepared gel formulation against p-acne was also investigated using disc diffusion method. The anti-microbial activity of the prepared gels was studied with a clear inhibition zone. The formulated gel F2 has greater anti-microbial activity with a larger diameter of zone of inhibition compared to F1 and F3. It was concluded from study that the extract of Psidium Guajava and Tabernaemontana Divaricata can be formulated in an aqueous gel-based system for topical therapy of acne vulgaris

    Ayurvedic Management of Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy

    The prevalence of diabetic neuropathy is rising in the present society. Despite advances in the field of diabetic care, it is the most common chronic complication of diabetes mellitus. Even before the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus, diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) symptoms appear in patients with pre-diabetes. A 74-year-old male patient with history of diabetes mellitus presented with DPN symptoms. Numbness and burning sensation are described as the Poorva rupa of Prameha. Acharya Charaka mentioned Daha as the complication of Prameha. Vataraktha and Prameha upadrava treatment were adopted which includes both internal and external therapies. Toronto Clinical Scoring System and diabetic neuropathy symptom score were assessed for outcome. The scores showed good improvement after treatment. The result indicates that Ayurvedic medicines are effective in management of DPN

    Assessment of Efficacy and Safety of Dr.Ortho Capsules in Managing Musculoskeletal Disorders: A Phase IV Post-Marketing Surveillance Study

    Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the potential efficacy and safety of Dr. Ortho capsules in managing various musculoskeletal conditions, including knee pain, joint stiffness, arthritis, bulky shoulders, joint inflammation, acute sports injuries, strains, and sprains. Methods: The study was a single centric, open-label, non-randomized, post-marketing surveillance study involving 120 subjects. Subjects were selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. The study assessed changes in pain intensity and disability levels after the administration of Dr. Ortho capsules, employing the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), respectively. Additionally, safety was evaluated through physical examinations, vital sign monitoring, and laboratory safety parameters. Results: The study revealed significant reductions in pain intensity and disability levels among the participants. Pain intensity, as measured by VAS, decreased significantly (p< 0.0001) from a mean score of 4.84 at baseline (day 1) to 0.38 at the end of the study (day 30). Disability levels, indicated by ODI, significantly improved (p<0.0001) from a mean score of 14.73% at baseline to 1.88% at the end of the study. There were no reported adverse events during the study, and all safety parameters remained within normal ranges. Conclusion: The findings of the study suggest that Dr. Ortho capsules may offer effective relief for individuals with musculoskeletal conditions, reducing pain intensity and improving functional abilities. The absence of adverse events and the maintenance of normal safety parameters indicate the safety of Dr. Ortho capsules for human consumption

    The Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry Analysis of an Ayurvedic Formulation Amruthadi Kashaya

    Amruthadi Kashaya is a Ayurvedic formulation mentioned in the book Arogya Kalpadruma for the treatment of Pandu (anaemic syndrome), Kamala (jaundice) and Raktapitha (bleeding disorders). The Yoga contains six drugs namely Amrutha (Tinospora cordifolia), Vasa (Adhatoda vasica), Yashtimadhu (Glycyrrhiza glabra), Tiktha (Solanum anguivi), Ela (Elettaria cardamomum), Pichumantha (Azadirachta indica). This Kashaya is rich in phytoconstituents, such as phenolics, terpenoids, and lipids, which are known for their many biological benefits, including anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and antioxidant effects. The purpose of the current study is to use Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GCMS) analysis to identify the different types of bio molecules that are present in this Kashaya. Kashaya was prepared according to standard protocol. It was concentrated in the rotary vacuum evaporator, and the total soluble solid (TSS) obtained was used for GCMS analysis. The GCMS of Kashaya showed the presence of bio molecules such as 7 Hexadecanoic acid, methyl ester, Methyl tetradecanoate, Diethyl Phthalate, Dodecanoic acid, methyl ester, Methyl stearate, à-Terpineol, Methyl 8-methylnonanoate, 3-Cyclohexene-1-methanol, à, à,4-trimethyl-, acetate, Decanoic acid, methyl ester, 1,6,10-Dodecatrien-3-ol,3,7,11-trimethyl-, (E)-, Ethyl iso-allocholate, Spiro [2,4] hepta-4,6-diene, Butylated Hydroxytoluene, 9-Hexadecenoic acid, methyl ester, (Z) etc. à-Terpineol, 7-Hexadecenoic acid, methyl ester, Butylated hydroxytoluene, Nerolidyl acetate have antioxidant activity likewise some of the bio molecules have anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, anticancer activity. It is concluded that Ayurvedic formulation Amruthadi Kashaya contains many bio molecules having therapeutic actions

    Ahara, Nidra and Brahmacharya plays significant role in preventing major diseases affecting both physical and mental well-being. Nidra stands out as one of the prominent factors to be examined in the contemporary era, constituting a vital component of a healthy lifestyle. Ayurveda defines Nidra (sleep) as the physiological state of rest for the Sharira (body), Mana (mind) and Indriya (sense organs).  Lack of Nidra, results in conditions like primary insomnia or Anidra and is associated with the onset of various clinical diseases. Over time, it progress into chronic disorders such as secondary or tertiary insomnia. Aim: To introduce and underscore the concept of Nidra and its physiological impact on the human body. Materials and Method: The literature review was compiled from available Ayurvedic literatures and various relevant articles related to Nidra and sleep. Conclusion: Ayurveda has given more importance to Nidra (sleep) by considering it as one among three pillars of life. The Samhitas provide an in-depth exploration of Nidra, presenting its classification and physiology. Nidra (sleep) is not just a phenomenon to ignore but it has great impact in our body and the study of sleep phenomenon is important for the early diagnosis of sleep disorders
