Context Matters: Human Faces Hinder Face Pareidolia

    No full text
Article In Special Collection: CogNet.International audienceThe human visual system readily processes illusory faces (IFs) as faces, a phenomenon known as face pareidolia. Building on evidence that IF processing elicits face-like neural activity and is sensitive to contextual cues, we investigated, via two experiments, whether and how the presence of human faces as a visual context to IFs influences IF categorization. In Experiment 1, we exploited the frequency-tagging approach in EEG to display IFs within rapid sequences of various object categories, interleaved with either human faces (face context, FC) or houses (nonface context, NC). The IF-selective neural response was significantly weaker and less face-like in FC compared to NC, with different topographical and temporal patterns. In Experiment 2, another group of participants performed an explicit IF detection task and exhibited slower RTs and lower detection accuracy in FC than in NC, consistent with the neural findings from Experiment 1. These results suggest that, rather than facilitating IF categorization, the presence of human faces interferes with IF categorization, likely because they compete for the same face-selective resources. Overall, this research highlights the critical role of context in shaping visual categorization by demonstrating earnestly how the visual environment dynamically influences the neural and perceptual processing of ambiguous stimuli

A Single Device for Complete Temporal Characterization of Ultrafast Laser Pulses Across Six Octaves

    No full text
We report the first reconfiguration-free temporal characterization of a femtosecond light source spanning more than six octaves, from the ultraviolet (210-220 nm) to the midinfrared (15-16 μm), using the recently developed plasma-induced frequency-resolved optical switching (PI-FROSt) technique. A commercial optical parametric amplifier equipped with harmonic-generation and difference-frequency modules is characterized, including the signal, idler, second-and third-harmonic beams, and mid-infrared extensions. All measurements are performed with the same optical setup and switching medium, without any realignment or change of nonlinear elements. These results establish PI-FROSt as a unique, broadband, phase-matching-free, and damage-free diagnostic tool for ultrafast sources

Paleozoic and Mesozoic oceanic anoxic events and biotic crises

International audienceAnthropogenic global warming is causing rapid deoxygenation of the modern oceans, threatening marine ecosystems. The multiple episodes of oceanic anoxic events (OAEs) that occurred during geological history provide a crucial perspective for understanding their mechanisms and consequences. This paper presents the classification system of ocean redox states (from oxic to euxinic), and summarizes the different indicators used for paleo-redox reconstructions such as lithofacies, biofacies, minerals, redox-sensitive elements, isotopes, and biomarkers. Based on the 30 studies in this special issue, we synthesize the following advances: (1) spatio-temporal evolution of ocean anoxia from the Cambrian to the Late Paleozoic and its coupling with the carbon and nitrogen cycles; (2) triggering and driving roles of volcanic activity, climate fluctuations, and enhanced weathering on OAEs; (3) responses of biota to OAEs, including extinction, recovery, and community reorganization; (4) responses of terrestrial ecosystems to OAEs, such as vegetation turnover and increase of lacustrine organic carbon burial; and (5) the modulating role of astronomical orbital cycles (especially eccentricity) on organic matter burial during OAEs. These multidisciplinary results deepen our understanding of the mechanisms and ecological responses of deep-time OAEs and provide geological analogies and theoretical bases for assessing the future trends of modern ocean deoxygenation
