Exploring the Challenges of Initial Teacher Preparation: Voicing the Concerns from the Field
Get PDFIt is widely recognized that the best education systems have the best teachers, and a school can only ever be as good as its teachers. However, the quality of a teaching force is dependent on the availability of good quality teacher education program. Hence, the purpose of this study was to explore the challenges of initial teacher preparation program from insiders’ perspectives. Data were collected via semi-structured interview and analyzed narratively. The findings of the study revealed that failure to attract the right people into teaching, poor quality of teacher training programs, weak University and School partnership, unfair and disproportionate treatment of teacher education, policy- practice gap, poor teacher retention strategy, and poor information and communication technology integration as the challenges undermining the teacher education program. The need to attracting best and brightest candidates into the profession, strengthening teacher education programs, improving the management of teacher education, valuing teachers and improving their status are areas identified as implication of the study
An Empirical Study of the Effect of Multimedia Information Technology on College English Teaching
Get PDFIn college English teaching, educators often use multimedia information technology to carry out teaching activities and present the corresponding curriculum content in detail. Based on two semesters of analysis and investigation, this paper presents an empirical study on multimedia teaching in two courses of a non-English major in one Chinese college. The results show that multimedia teaching technology can effectively enhance college students' interest in English learning, stimulate their enthusiasm, enhance the interaction between teachers and students, and cultivate their autonomous learning ability. The research suggests that colleges and universities should strengthen the hardware support and software facilities of multimedia-assisted teaching to promote the significant improvement of students' language ability
Oral Communication Needs of Pre-Service Teachers in Practice Teaching
Get PDFPractice teaching is the culmination of the teacher education program where student teachers apply learned content knowledge and pedagogical skills in real classroom teaching. The purpose of this paper is to present the perceived oral communication needs of student teachers during their practice teaching. Survey questionnaire, classroom observations and focused group discussions were used to collect the needed data. It was found that student teachers’ oral communication skills in English fall short and need to be enhanced to cope with the demands of the teaching profession. Likewise, it was noted that the need to have a special kind of English class for pre-service teachers is very much needed to help them in their practice teaching since the medium of instruction used in class is English. Furthermore, the kind of English they need for classroom communication is also very specific for classroom interactions. The findings serve as basis in designing a module that can be used in remedial class in English for Pre-Service Teachers to respond to their communicative needs in the classroom
On the Theme of Immortality Through Literature in Shakespeare’s Sonnets
Get PDFWilliam Shakespeare’s 154 Sonnets contribute a great deal to art and literature. As a world-class master, he lives in the English Renaissance period, which is marked by a cultural flowering. Humanism is the essence of the Renaissance. It dramatically affects Shakespeare’s works. In the sonnets, he reinforces his affirmation of human wisdom and knowledge of creating magnificent literature, thus bringing about the immortality of youth and beauty, which is an acute reflection of his humanistic thought of the Renaissance. This paper takes the humanism of the Renaissance as its concept. Then, this paper concentrates on investigating the theme of immortality through literature in these sonnets, including Sonnet 15, 17, 18, 19, 55, 60, and 81. After interpreting the themes with concrete examples, this paper summarizes that Shakespeare’s yearning for immortality through literature derives from his humanistic spirit. Additionally, this paper is of higher significance for valuing the principle of putting people first at the core, while pursuing a comprehensive, balanced, and sustainable development in modern society
Practicing of Corporate Social Responsibility for Community Empowerment: A Case of a Mining Company in Indonesia
Get PDFIn recent years, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has attained increased significance in both business and in the associated academic literature. The very term, CSR, clearly indicates the focus is on social responsibility as a company’s obligation to be accountable to all its stakeholders in all its operations and activities. Nowadays the concept of empowerment has become the development paradigm. The Indonesian government is expected to coordinate and be responsible for a wide range of community development activities that allow the entire community to participate actively, while the company contributes to the community empowerment process as the implementation of social responsibility undertaken through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). This study assessed the CSR activities undertaken by a mining company (PT Vale Indonesia). Over the past 50 years, PT Vale Indonesia (PTVI) has been operating under the Contract of Work (CoW) agreement with the Indonesia government to open-pit nickel mines and processing plant facilities near Sorowako, Indonesia. This study provided empirical evidence on PTVI's presence benefits the surrounding communities by implementing PTVI’s CSR program called Integrated Community Development Program (ICDP). The research purpose is to explore the concept of CSR practice that is viewed and applied by PTVI to create a win-win situation that contributes to community empowerment. The findings of this case study contribute significantly to give more profound knowledge of the role of ICDP to community empowerment and to extant an understanding of the company dealing with the challenges of CSR activities for community empowerment
The Differences between English and Indonesian Lecturer in the Classroom Interaction Based on Sinclair and Coulthard Model
Get PDFThis study was about IRF (Initiation-Response-Feedback) analysis on classroom interaction between English and Indonesian lecturer with students. The aimed of this study were to describe the processes of Initiation-Response-Feedback are employed by the English and Indonesian Lecturers with students in classroom interaction based on Sinclair and Coulthard Model. This research used qualitative research. The data of this study were the utterances that expressed by the English and Indonesian lecturer with students in thelearning process. The source of data was English and Indonesian lecturer with the students in STKIP Budidaya Binjai. The data were collected in five ways by Rymes (2009) observing, recording, transcribing, interviewing and analyzing. The data were analyzed based on Sinclair and Coulthard (1975). The result of this study were English subject, the lecturer initiaton was the highest appear in classroom interaction. The students felt enthusiastic in learning it although they had problem in pronounciation and write words but they want to try to do the task given by the lecturer. Lecturer initiation as the highest appear in classroom interaction. The competition as the technique of teaching that lecturer used in this learning process just made one student of each group that become active in share their opinion. The other students felt ashamed to share their opinion because of afraidness to get bad score from the lecture
The Impact of Using Online Educational Tools on Science Learning among Students
Get PDFThe present study aims to investigate the effect of using online educational tools on science learning among male students in the fifth year of primary school in Shahriyar city. Research method is semi-experimental based on pre-test - post-test design. All male students in the six year of primary school at Shahriyar city in the academic year 2016-17 that 260 of them were selected by random sampling. First, pages from the book of science without the use of educational tools in all classes are taught and filled researcher-made inventory of science learning (reliability of learning inventory using Cronbach's alpha coefficient was calculated and was used to assess the validity of the content from the point of view of primary school teachers and professors and experts). Then other pages of the math book using educational tools in 5 sessions of 30-minute was done supervised by teachers and researchers for all classes. Having the project been completed, researcher-made learning questionnaire was again conducted equal to the first questionnaire for all classes. And to analyze the assumptions, gamma test in agreement tables and non- parametric Spearman correlation test using SPSS software version 20 was conducted. The results showed that the active use of educational tools leads to a significant difference in science learning in students. 
Banking Competition and Economic Growth: 2006-2015 Case of Rwanda
Get PDFIt has been argued that a competitive and efficient financial sector is a prerequisite for economic growth and development. The objective of this study therefore was to determine the influence of bank competition on economic growth in Rwanda for the period 2006 - 2015.The study used Error Correction Model after conducting Unit Root Test(ADF) and Cointegration Test(Johansen) so that to check the degree of adjustment in the short run. The results revealed that Credit to GDP is highly significant and this implied that there is a need to set the policy influencing credit distribution in order to influence economic growth. In addition disequilibrium found in the short run is corrected quarterly at 70.32%
The Role of Youth in Overcoming Problems Related Sinabung Volcano Eruption

In the disaster management, the youth certainly has a very important role to maintain the regional resilience. So that young people must be prepared to overcome threats and challenges related disasters that cannot be predicted. This study aims to determine how the role of youth in overcoming problems related Sinabung Volcano Eruption in Tiganderket Sub-District, Karo District, North Sumatra. This research uses qualitative methods. In this study, there are three informants interviewed. They are; 1) The Secretary of BPBD (Regional Disaster Management Agency, Karo District, 2) Youth Leaders, and 3) The local community who were presented in the form of scientific analysis. The results of this study indicate that: The Effectiveness of Youth's Role in overcoming Sinabung Volcano Eruption, Tiganderket Sub-district, Karo District, North Sumatra has not been able to tackle effectively. It can be measured from the level of Youth involvement to play a role in overcoming the disaster. It can look from the three phases which are Pre -disasters, During-disasters, and Post-disasters. The youth in Tiganderket Sub-district Only involved when the disaster happened.  
Influential Factors to Financial Management in Chegutu District Secondary Schools of Mashonaland West Province, Zimbabwe
No full textThe study explored factors that influence financial management in Chegutu District Secondary Schools of Mashonaland West Province, Zimbabwe. The study was stimulated by the serious financial challenges in secondary schools as characterised by failure to follow laid down procedures, disagreements, inadequate training and lack of knowledge by both school heads and SDC members in managing finances. The interpretive paradigm and qualitative approach guided the study. A case study design was adopted and purposively sampled participants constituted five school heads, five School Development Committee chairpersons, five School Development Committee treasurers and five school bursars. Thematically analysed data was collected through semi-structured interviews and document analysis. The findings revealed that manuals and policy circulars influence the way schools formulate their budgets as they give clear steps that should be followed. It also emerged from the study that the school finance committee is responsible for drawing the school budget after consultation with other stakeholders. It was found that training of school heads, School Development Committee members and bursars influence financial management to a larger extent and there is a very strong relationship between financial management training and effectiveness of financial management in secondary schools. The study concluded that good working relationship among stakeholders and lack of knowledge by both school heads and School Development Committee members in managing school finances greatly influence the way they execute their duty of managing school finances. The study recommends further research that explores strategies that can be established for improving the way schools manage finances
