    Proposed Work Text in Teaching and Learning Communication Arts for Freshman College Students

    Teaching and learning English can be most successful with developed instructional materials that are research-based. This study investigated the grammatical competencies of college freshman students with the end-in-view of proposing a worktext in teaching/learning communication arts. The study used descriptive analysis method. 64 freshman students enrolled in English 11a (Communication Arts and Skills 1) were used as participants. Results revealed that the freshman students’ grammatical competencies improved from “fairly competent” before exposure to the modules to “competent” after exposure. Moreover, findings indicated that there was significant difference in the competency level in grammar of the respondents before and after exposure to the worktext. This means that after using the worktext, the students’ level of competence in grammar greatly improved. Hence, the worktext as an instructional material in teaching/learning communication arts is effective

    In Universitas Negeri Medan, there are 6 assignments for each subjects to be accomplished in each semester, namely Routine Tasks, Critical Book Reviews, Critical Journal Reviews, Mini Research, Engineering Ideas and Projects. In doing all these tasks, of course, reading has important role. A good reading gives accurate data and information in accomplishing all tasks. To avoid a very boring reading and provide challenges, develop a good learning methods is a must. The aims of the study is to investigate how the recitation learning methods developed for  the reading comprehension of the students. The data obtained through the observation, questionnaires, and interviews to know the competence of students in reading comprehension. Adopting research development method that refers to the development of model, this development research data is qualitative and quantitative data. The objective of this research is to develop recitation methods in online learning for reading comprehension skills of the students of English Literature Study Program in Universitas Negeri Medan. The results of this study are expected to be able to give contribution to the students who take Reading Subject and also to the lecturers who teach Reading Subject to be more efficient and effective in using appropriate learning methods in Reading Subject

    Developing Case Method Based Course Substantial in Enriching ELT for Student of English Education Study Program

    This study aimed to develop case method-based course materials on Culture in ELT Subjects for students of the English education study program at Universitas Negeri Medan. It was conducted by using Research and Development (R&D) design. The subject of this study was 25 students in the fourth semester taken from 3 classes (C, D, and E) of the English Education study program academic year of 2021/2022. Borg, and Gall‘s research theory (1983) is used in this research, there are several procedures conducted namely gathering data and information, need analysis, designing course material, validating and evaluating new course material by the experts, and revising the course material and final product. The instruments used to collect the data were questionnaires, interviews, and expert judgment questionnaires. The data resulted from needs analysis and interviews with students and lecturers. The product of this study was English Culture on ELT course materials for the English Education Study Program based on the case method, which consists of five units. Based on the expert judgment, the whole aspects of developed materials were 81-100% and can be categorized as “very good“

    The existence of transgender people in Indonesia is still considered a mismatch with norms in society. Not infrequently, they are individually and community marginalized, criminalized, and even persecuted. This study aims to determine the negotiation of gender identity in trans women on Kasu Island, the Indonesia-Singapore border. The existence of trans women on Kasu Island is not a new thing, but the social environment does not mind their existence. This study uses a qualitative research method of case studies. Data collection was carried out through in-depth interviews and observations. Secondary data is obtained through online searches of relevant literature. The results of this study revealed that the existence of trans women on Kasu Island faces fluid identity management and negotiations over a close social environment (attachment identity). The existence of trans women in the border areas of this country is inseparable from the influence of the modern situation in the country of Singapore

    An investigation of the key Challenges and Resolutions for Sustainable Groundwater Management in Paktika, Afghanistan

    If Afghanistan's current environmental problems are not addressed, the consequences could include severe water scarcity in some areas, which could threaten livelihoods, create environmental refugees, exacerbate adverse humanitarian conditions, and increase regional tensions. Therefore, the study was conducted in Sharana, the center of Paktika province, and was attended by 45 farmers. The goal of the research was to determine the major threats to Sharana's groundwater resources. For this study, questionnaires and field observations were chosen as techniques. according to the study's findings that drought, increased use of solar-powered submersibles, a lack of water management plan, a lack of regulations related to groundwater exploitations, and extensive use of underground water for irrigation due to farmers' lack of awareness and traditional irrigation systems are among the key challenges threatening groundwater in Paktika. Because the groundwater level has dropped, it is not unlikely that this situation may turn into a disaster if it continues. The primary components that can contribute to the sustainability of groundwater resources management in Paktika city are raising public knowledge about water resources management, switching to smart irrigation techniques, and adopting an integrated water resources management framework

    The persistence reports on crime in Mushin are derogatory in nature and generate concerns for noble and intellectual researcher across Nigeria. Thus, Mushin was listed as one of the notorious areas in Lagos with constant cases of criminal activities that negate growth and development of the State. Extant literatures and Instinctual drive theory by Sigmund Freud was adopted for the justification of the inquiry. Mixed methods and cross sectional research was adopted with structured and unstructured questionnaires for collection of quantitative and qualitative data respectively from the participants at Mushin, Lagos. Yemane Taro (1963) formula for sample size was adopted but due to fear of unknown demonstrated by the participants after screening, coding and editing 185 quantitative instruments was found useful with 10 participants that willingly gave their consent to give verbal information The result gathered shows that there is relationship between personal characteristics and criminality at r=0.594, F-value yields F=99.837. Psychological factors and criminality at r=0.694, F=170.211. Parent socio economic factors and criminality at r=0.798, F=320.928.  Environmental factors and criminality at r=0.654, F=136.807 Community policing and criminality at r=0.826, r=0.951 while the R-Square is 0.904. On this ground, the following recommendations were made; Nigerian government all levels, Philanthropist, Multinational organizations and the entire community members must come together to tackled the menace, Nigeria security should learn not to divulge classified information on issue of insecurity among others

    The ever increasing menace associated with substance or illegal drug consumption among the Nigerian youth is endemic and it has posed as serious challenges and threats toward achieving progressive growth and development on the part of the families, community members, medical practitioners, social workers and other researched area throughout the world. Several publications articulated claim that youths are the future leaders of tomorrow due to their unique characteristics. Unfortunately when denied access to showcase their talents, the situation result to antisocial behaviour (trauma, dependency, larceny,/thefts, poor manpower development among others) that may hampered human and societal development Strain theory, Rational Choice theory and Structural Functionalism were adopted. Content analysis method was adopted in reviewing various publications from Jstor, Scopus, PDF, and Scholarly Google among others. The consequence of increase in security issues can be related to several factors which include illicit drug usage, poor parenting style, peer pressure, poor role modelling. On these grounds, the following recommendations were make- the parent should by all means socialized their children in the way of the Lord so that they will not depart from it, de-associate themselves from negative or bad company as friends or role model, the government at all levels should create recreation, sports centres for the youths to channel their youthful energy, more of public awareness should be carried out in various communities to awake the moral consciousness of the youths concerning negative consequences associated with illicit drug intak

    The Lack of the English Lab and Its Effects on Students’ Listening Skills: The Case of the Second-Year Students from English Departments in Kinshasa

    This article is based on the fact that there is lack of English language laboratory in the institutions of higher education. The research problem is that the students in these institutions have difficulties to develop their listening skills. Since the students in these institutions are taught by non-native speakers of English, they are exposed to a kind of English influenced by the lecturers’ mother tongues or French. As English is taught in the institutions of higher education in Kinshasa as a Foreign Language, the English Language Lab becomes indispensable to develop the students’ listening skills. Therefore, the research question of this paper is “what are the effects of the lack of the English Language Lab on the students’ listening skills?” So the aim of this paper is to investigate into the second-year students’ listening skills so as to find out the effects of the lack of the English Language Lab on the students under study. The hypothesis is that the effects are inabilities to discriminate the English sounds and to grasp the words uttered with high speed. To reach the aim, a listening test was used to collect data and the content analysis was used to analyze them. The results confirmed the hypothesis and the discussion showed that without an English Language Lab, students cannot develop their listening skills

    Representation of Madura Cultural Tourism in Indonesian Poetry Discourse (Tourism Literature Study)

    The purpose of this study was to describe Madura tourism contained in a collection of Indonesian poetry books. The method used in this study was descriptive qualitative with a tourism theory approach. Data was the form of words and sentences that represent Madura cultural tourism, while the data source in this study came from a collection of Indonesian poetry with the theme of tourism. The instrument used for data collection in this study was the researcher himself. The data collection technique in this study was carried out with the note-taking method, with the work steps of reading repeatedly the collection of Indonesian poetry books, outlining the selected data, and recording data. To analyze the data in this study, researchers used the Milles & Huberman model by adjusting the needs. The results showed that there were 14 collections of Indonesian poetry books with the theme of Madura cultural tourism, consisting of 69 poetry titles, 121 data were found, with details of 105 data representing Madura traditional tourism and 16 data representing Madura art tourism. The representation of tourism in Indonesian poetry would ultimately have an impact on the introduction, preservation, and development of Madurese culture as a tourism object
