Cellulose aerogel composites as oil sorbents and their regeneration /

    No full text
Background: With every oil tanker comes the risk of an accident and oil spill. Sorbents are the most suitable means to remove oil spills. Aerogels as sorbents have high porosity and can be made from cellulose from paper waste. The literature does not distinguish between paper and cardboard as sources of cellulose aerogels and little is known about composites of cellulose aerogels consisting of cellulose fibres and chemically untreated, unprocessed fibres or particles of straw, wool, macroalgae or cellulose acetate from cigarette butts. In this study, the sorption properties for marine diesel oil and biodiesel of such aerogels and their regenerative capacity with bioethanol were investigated. Methods: Cellulose aerogels were prepared from office paper and cardboard waste without and with chemically untreated algae, straw, wool and cellulose acetate as a composite by freeze drying. All samples were hydrophobised with methylsilane. The density to calculate the porosity and the contact angle were determined. Then the sorption capacity was determined over five cycles of sorption of oil and regeneration with bioethanol. Results: The average contact angle of all samples was 125°, indicating hydrophobicity. Paper-based aerogels were found to consistently have higher sorption capacities for biodiesel, marine diesel oil and bioethanol than cardboard-based aerogels. In particular, the wool/cellulose aerogel composite was found to have better sorption capacity for biodiesel, marine diesel oil and bioethanol than all other samples. The cellulose acetate/cellulose aerogel composite showed significantly higher sorption capacities than the paper and cardboard control samples (highest value is 32.25 g g−1) only when first used as a sorbent for biodiesel, but with a rapid decrease in the following cycles

This article analyses the response of Lithuanian local authorities to the first wave of COVID-19 with a special focus on the economic support measures they took. The main goal of this in-depth study is to compare the economic response measures included in the action plans of Riga and Tallinn, two large Lithuanian municipal administrations, as well as to analyse the narrative developed in the two cities. The methodology of this research is based on the review of literature, the analysis of action plans, and a case study. The Vilnius and Klaipėda city municipalities adopted action plans to support residents and businesses. Although there are many measures the plans have in common, they differ in the context and scope of application. Municipalities are willing to grant exemptions from various fees and taxes. They have used innovative measures: Vilnius allowed the opening of outdoor cafes, the practice, which was observed by global media. According to the research findings, the actions of municipal authorities can be successful, as municipalities are closer to the residents and can respond to their needs and those of entrepreneurs more quickly and flexibly. The approval of COVID-19 management action plans by municipalities has contributed to the narrative of recovery and hope

In the master’s thesis, it is proposed to cover an open site of the shipyard, located in Klaipėda seaport, Lithuania, the EU, by mobile steel structures. In the review chapter the development of Klaipėda seaport and shipyard have been reviewed. The research of dynamically acting steel structures, provided by the scientific literature and similar mobile structures have being analysed, peculiarities of foundation design have being discussed. In the research chapter of site modernization possibilities, the shipyard existing open site conditions were investigated. An archival report of the geological conditions of the site area has been reviewed. Six transverse frames mobile structure of height of 23 m and span of 40 m have been proposed. The frames are arranged by the step of 6,0 m and jointed by the system of braces. Pile foundations have been calculated. In the chapter of static analysis of the models, according to the design codes and climatic conditions in Klaipėda city, two types of steel frames have being designed: trussed and continuous. A special algorithm from three stages has been made: three transverse frame calculation schemes have been created, cross sections have been determined, cross-sectional optimization has been performed. Finally, the trussed frame is lighter by 37 %, the continuous frame is stiffer up to 40 %. In the movement analysis chapter, the influence of dynamic effects is discussed. After third stage, the calculation results of different models were compared and the most appropriate trussed type was selected. In the economic assessment chapter, it has been calculated that the mobile facility would increase the productivity of the open site up to 92 %. To sum up, the conclusions of the research and suggestions for the implementation have been presented. During research, the scientific article was prepared and presentation was presented in the international conference. The thesis consists of 79 pages of the main text and 27 pages of annexes. The text contains 25 tables, 79 figures and a list of 64 references

The management of personal career in the aspect of self-fulfillment.

Scientific problem: How does the management of personal career help satisfy a person’s need for self-fulfillment? The aim of the research is to theoretically analyse and empirically substantiate personal career management from the aspect of self-realization. Tasks of the research: 1. To analyse the aspects of personal career management and self-realization concepts and their mutual synergy. 2. To explore the attitudes of adults towards the management of their personal careers in satisfying the need for self- fulfillment. Research methods: analysis of scientific literature and interviews. Theoretical and empirical reseach and analysis confirmed the hypothesis that self-fulfillment through professional activities is possible when an individual is able to purposefully manage their personal career. This results in a strong synergistic link between personal career management and self-realization to achieve this goal. The analysis of qualitative data shows that interviewees have considerable experience in personal career management, are well aware of their competencies and have an excellent ability to realize themselves in practice. Self-expression at work is the most important driving force in everyone’s career. However, informants don‘t make sufficient use of all career planning opportunities (do not have an interest in career planning), which would allow them to pursue a career more effectively in the chosen field and give even more self-confidence
