Developing a child's authentic learning experience through media: teachers' approach /

    No full text
The article analyses the development of an authentic experience for primary school students as a result of experiential learning. Possibilities of developing children’s authentic experience through media are discussed, as the ability to find, perceive and critically assess and use information and media content, as well as to express oneself, are one of the most important human abilities in the 21st century. The article presents a qualitative research of the attitudes of primary education teachers about the development of a child’s authentic experience by using media. The following research revealed that the method of accumulating authentic experience has a positive effect on students’ learning motivation, allows to develop critical, creative thinking, constructs a real connection with teaching materials and practice, enables students to operate actively, independently, and be responsible for their own learning. The research highlighted the advantages and disadvantages of developing an authentic learning experience through media

Downscaling with an unstructured coastal-ocean model to the Goro Lagoon and the Po river delta branches /

    No full text
The Goro Lagoon Finite Element Model (GOLFEM) presented in this paper concentrates on the high-resolution downscaled model of the Goro Lagoon, along with five Po river branches and the coastal area of the Po delta in the northern Adriatic Sea (Italy) where crucial socio-economic activities take place. GOLFEM was validated by means of validation scores (bias – BIAS, root mean square error – RMSE, and mean absolute error – MAE) for the water level, current velocity, salinity and temperature measured at several fixed stations in the lagoon. The range of scores at the stations are: for temperature between −0.8 to +1.2◦C, for salinity from −0.2 to 5 PSU, for sea level 0.1 m. The lagoon is dominated by an estuarine vertical circulation due to a double opening at the lagoon mouth and sustained by multiple sources of freshwater inputs. The non-linear interactions among the tidal forcing, the wind and the freshwater inputs affect the lagoon circulation at both seasonal and daily time scales. The sensitivity of the circulation to the forcings was analyzed with several sensitivity experiments done with the exclusion of the tidal forcing and different configurations of the river connections. GOLFEM was designed to resolve the lagoon dynamics at high resolution in order to evaluate the potential effects on the clam farming of two proposed scenarios of human intervention on the morphology of the connection with the sea. We calculated the changes of the lagoon current speed and salinity, and using opportune fitness indexes related to the clams physiology, we quantified analytically the effects of the interventions in terms of extension and persistence of areas of the clams optimal growth. The results demonstrate that the correct management of this kind of fragile environment relies on both long-term (intervention scenarios) and short-term (coastal flooding forecasts and potential anoxic conditions) modeling, based on a flexible tool that is able to consider all the recorded human interventions on the river connections. This study also demonstrates the importance of designing a seamless chain of models that are capable of integrating local effects into the coarser operational oceanographic models

Local perianal anesthetic infiltration is safe and effective for anorectal surgery /

    No full text
Background: General or regional anesthesia is predominantly used for anorectal surgery, however in the recent years more attention was drawn in the use of local anesthesia for anorectal surgery. In this study we present the technique and results of the use of local perianal anesthetic infiltration for minor anorectal operations. Methods: In this cohort study patients undergoing surgery for hemorrhoids, anal fissures and low anal fistulas were included. Posterior perineal block was induced with a mixture containing 0.125% bupivacaine and 0.5% lidocaine. All patients were followed up at 30 days either by a post-operative visit or a telephone call and all post-operative complications over the post-operative 30-day period were registered. Results: One thousand and twenty-six consecutive patients were included in our study. For all patients' intraoperative analgesia was achieved after performing perianal anesthetic infiltration and no additional support from the anesthesia team was necessary in any of case. Complications were observed in 14 (1.4%). Urinary retention occurred in 5 (0.5%) cases. Six cases of bleeding occurred after hemorrhoidectomy (0.6%) and 1 (0.1%) after lateral internal sphincterotomy. Perianal abscess developed for two patients (0.2%). Conclusions: Local anesthesia using posterior perineal block technique is safe and effective for intraoperative analgesia in anorectal surgery, saving a substantial operation cost by avoiding the involvement of an anesthesia team and resulting in minimal incidence of urinary retention and other complications

Monte Carlo experiments are an efficient tool for investigation of the Laser-Induced Damage Threshold (LIDT) testing with pulsed lasers. In this study, the approach of sequential Monte Carlo search is developed for LIDT testing with bundle of laser pulses and compared with the approach of Sample Average Approximation (SAA). The likelihood ratio test is applied to accept or reject the hypothesis about the data distribution

Organic personal care cosmetics: behavior of choice and consumption /

    No full text
Background. The researchers have shown that even small doses of some chemical substances in cosmetics, when absorbing and accumulating in the body, can damage the skin and provoke various diseases. Therefore, the choice of organic cosmetics with certified ingredients can contribute to human health and nature conservation. The survey aimed to determine behavior of choice and consumption of organic cosmetic products according to the consumers’ socio-demographic characteristics

The current tendencies of a global society are obvious: the labour market is expanding, people are travelling for various reasons all over the world, every organisation can have foreign workers with different cultural backgrounds, the internationalisation of studies HEIs is constantly being implemented, etc. Successful and effective daily life depends on the readiness of people of any age to be open to global change and innovation. The intense pace of life requires adaptation to new circumstances and the use of internationally recognised tools to address global challenges. This article reveals the benefits of intercultural communication in a global society. This form of communication influences the quality of modern life, and strengthens positive attitudes towards new trends in the labour market, global business, immigrants and foreigners. In addition, intercultural communication can be used to promote local culture to others, and to become familiar with other cultures. The analysis and survey of various sources provides valuable evidence that intercultural communication is beneficial to the quality of daily and professional life, and creates a competitive advantage for labour market professionals. According to the results of the survey, intercultural communication is useful for strengthening self-esteem and confidence, developing new competencies, studying abroad, and managing careers in business

Assessment o f leadership styles in organisations.

    No full text
This research article discusses leadership style as the actions of a manager when he seeks to influence employee behaviour and makes decisions that are goal-oriented or employee-related and able to reconcile goal-seeking and employee focus. The selected researched leadership styles are: transactional, transformational and servant. Transactional management is perceived as a leadership style that focuses more on technical problem-solving, and less on employees. The transformational style is considered more complex than transactional, and is not limited to employee encouragement through awards or punishments. The servant leadership style offers more meaningful leadership, to ensure sustainable outcomes for people, organisations and societies. The aim of the article: to distinguish theoretically leadership style criteria, to evaluate leadership style using the developed assessment tool. The object of the research: the evaluation of the leadership style in an organisation. Research methods: based on the insights of researchers, and applying methods of analysis and the synthesis of scientific literature, to present the importance and concepts of leadership styles, to identify their features as evaluation criteria, to describe leadership styles. Based on primary empirical data collected through a survey by two qualitative researchers (directly accompanying manager and staff), a comparison of leadership styles in organisations is assessed. This paper explores different criteria of leadership style: the decision-making method; providing instructions (tasks); responsibility sharing; the attitude towards initiative; the attitude towards employees; the attitude towards one’s own knowledge; communication with employees; the character of relations with employees; the attitude towards discipline; the attitude towards values; providing a vision for employees. These criteria were chosen to assess leadership styles in organisations. The qualitative research conducted allows us to conclude that the leaders of organisations 1 and 2 evaluate their leadership style as a combination of servant, transformational and transactional leadership styles. Their employees argue that the opposite is true, because their managers combine transactional, transformational and servant leadership styles. The leader of organisation 5 indicates that his combination of leadership styles is the same as that of the leaders of organisations 1 and 2. His employees say the same, only indicating that their manager combines transformational, servant and transactional leadership styles. The leader of organisation 4 refers to the leadership style as a transactional and transformational leadership style combined with the servant style. His staff refer to a different combination of leadership styles, consisting of servant, transactional and transformative leadership styles. Only the evaluation opinions of the head of organisation 3 and his staff agreed that the manager uses a combination of transactional, transformational and servant leadership styles. It can be concluded that the criteria chosen are suitable for assessing leadership styles in organisations. The criteria selected showed differences and overlaps between respondents, heads of organisations, and the employees directly under them. It provides opportunities to evaluate leadership styles and combinations of them in organisations. By using these criteria properly and purposefully, managers can ensure successful leadership, and the achievement of the organisation’s goals. Organisations use combinations of different leadership styles. A comparison of the statements made by managers and employees under them reveals the same combinations of leadership styles, only in different proportions

Assessment of ecosystem services across the land–sea interface in Baltic case studies /

    No full text
Spatial assessments of ecosystem services (ES) are needed to fulfil EU policy requirements and to support practical applications of the ES concept in policy implementation. So far, ES assessments have largely focused on terrestrial systems. A joint approach for land and sea is especially lacking. To overcome this gap, we present a novel spatial habitat typology and ES classification for an assessment across the land–sea interface. We build upon existing approaches and common spatial definitions, like CORINE land cover (CLC) types, water bodies of the Water Framework Directive (WFD), and habitat types according to the Habitats Directive (HD). We show applications of the resulting ES matrix for an expert-based assessment of ES potentials in three Baltic study sites (Schlei, Greifswald Bay and Curonian Lagoon). A complementary indicator-based approach to assess ES flows is introduced and applied. It enables a quantification of ES potentials and flows and ensures comparability among case study sites. Comparisons between the results for ES potentials and flows show that development capacities exist in particular for provisioning ES for marine habitats. Our approaches are spatially expandable and transferrable and could be applied to support environmental policy implementation. Further, we discuss their practical relevance, current limitations, and future research perspectives
