Sustainable investment opportunities in the blue economy.

    No full text
The blue economy is becoming the basis and the policy for new maritime technologies and sustainable maritime economic activity. According to the World Bank (2017), the challenges of the sustainable use of marine resources are related to the impact of climate change on rising sea levels, more frequent extreme weather events, and rising air temperatures. There is no doubt that this will have an impact on the performance of ocean-related business sectors. However, investment is needed for the blue economy to grow successfully. Financial institutions have an important role to play in financing sustainable projects. According to M. Janicka (2016: 27), financial institutions are usually associated with a policy of maximising profits rather than pursuing environmental action. However, there has been a change in the philosophy of these institutions, not only due to the increasing pressure on public authorities to take environmental issues into account, but also due to the changing attitudes of people in charge of financial institutions towards the environment. Investment decisions made by maritime businesses depend on many factors, but there is no doubt that successful profit-making should be reconciled with reducing resource intensity, making the development of the blue economy a modern-day pursuit. This may require significant investment from the public and private sectors. The term ‘the blue economy’ has been recognised for almost 15 years, but it is defined differently in various sources. R.E. Boschen-Rose et al. (2020: 835) define the concept of the blue economy as the sustainable use of ocean resources to promote economic growth, improve livelihoods, and enhance the state of ocean ecosystems. A. Alempijevi and A. Kovačic (2019: 97) describe the blue economy as a combination of sustainable development and green growth. Focus of the research: opportunities for sustainable investment in the development of the blue economy. Aim of the research: to identify sustainable investment opportunities in the development of the blue economy. Research methods: analysis of scientific literature, systematisation, generalisation and analysis of statistical data. The study shows that the successful development of the blue economy requires sustainable investment, and therefore needs to be given high priority. The European Union has put measures in place to finance this investment, and is creating a favourable environment to facilitate and encourage public and private investment in the blue economy. The study has revealed that the concept of sustainable investment should be understood as the concerted effort by technological progress, research, business and governments to invest in projects that include social, economic and environmental dimensions. A statistical analysis of sustainable investment trends in the development of the blue economy has shown that sustainable investment has the potential to grow in the future, but it is important to take into account the impact on the blue economy of the Covid-19 pandemic

The aim of this study was to determine the dependence of the total phenolic, flavonoid, and extractive content in extracts of Origanum vulgare L. on the soil pH, humus, total nitrogen (Ntotal), and plant-available/mobile phosphorus (P2O5 ), as well as potassium (K2O), total calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and sodium (Na) concentrations. Experimental fields were formed in four locations in Lithuania. Soil and perennial O. vulgare samples were taken at three sites of each experimental field. A total of 12 samples of soil and 12 samples of the tested plant were collected and analyzed. The concentrations of bioactive compounds in plants are significantly (p < 0.05–0.01) affected by some chemical properties of the soil: the total phenolic content was reliably correlated with the soil pH, Ntotal, Ca, Mg, and P2O5 ; the flavonoid content was correlated with the soil P2O5 , K2O, Mg, and Na; and the extractive content was correlated with the soil humus, Ntotal, and Na. The obtained results are useful for the development of the commercial cultivation of O. vulgare

Discourse on professionalisation in the practice of public health professionals providing services to persons with disabilities /

    No full text
This article is aimed to discuss findings of the study on professionalisation in the practice of public health professionals who provide services to persons of all ages with disabilities. The following problematic questions are raised: how does a public health specialist become a professional competent in providing their services to all citizens, regardless of age or health status? What are the possible professionalisation ways and opportunities for public health professionals who provide services to persons of different age with disabilities? The article presents a theoretical discourse of the professionalisation process, as well as results of the qualitative research so as to provide insight into possible ways (opportunities) for professionalisation of public health professionals in providing services to persons of different ages with disabilities. The study is novel in that it discloses dimensions (professionalism and professionism) of a public health specialist’s professionalisation process in working with persons of different ages with disabilities. As findings of the study show, the dimensions are theoretically inseparable from each other, though, with quite different ways of professionalisation in practice. The study has established that the ways of professionalisation (1.Work-based learning; 2.Reflection and activities; 3.Reflection on activities (formalisation of unexpressed competencies); 4.Reflection for activities; 5.Organisational culture and activities; 6.Integration/assimilation of knowledge) enable a person to develop existing competencies, to construct a professional identity through the integration of both aspects of relevance of professionalisation ways: practical activities and reflection

The article presents the concept of the cross-border method that was developed in the framework of the Erasmus+ programme project. The aim of this method is to provide students on PhD/Mg programmes with theoretical knowledge and practical competencies on how to properly develop and conduct research on social and health issues of the elderly in care institutions and in the family environment by using the cross-border method through collaboration and the transfer of innovation. This method was constructed as an attempt to understand the challenges of an ageing society in the modern world, and to be able to assess them in research thereof from both intercultural and comparative perspectives. In order to adopt innovations and to transfer experience in the context of addressing the problems of an ageing society, there is a potential to contribute to the stability of social protection and the accessibility of social services for the elderly. The article presents the concept of the method as one of the results of the project, and as a part of the long-term scientific contributions to revealing the importance of international cooperation and innovation in meeting the challenges of an ageing society. A properly chosen method and well-conducted studies show the essence of the phenomenon of an ageing society and its patterns. The methods determine the quality and reliability of the knowledge of the research subject, and open up opportunities for developing political, learning and care strategies for the social protection of an ageing society in the context of demographic change

A healthy diet and physical activity begin in early childhood, promote child’s healthy growth, improve cognitive development, and can have long-term health benefits and delay the development of chronic non- communicable diseases. For this reason, it is very important for the family to take responsibility, consciously educate and set an example for their children, thus creating healthy conditions for them to develop, grow and mature. The aim of the study – to investigate the role of the family in the formation of children's eating and physical activity habits. Objectives of the study: 1) Based on the scientific literature, to examine the impact of the family on the formation and health of children's eating and physical activity habits. 2) To find out parents’ attitude towards children’s health education in their social environment. 3) To determine the connection between children's health-promoting habits and their parents' sociodemographic factors. 4) To study and determine the parents’ role in the formation of children's eating and physical activity habits. Research methods: literature analysis and quantitative questionnaire by completing an anonymous written survey, statistical data analysis. The research sample – 450 respondents. The results of the research: The results showed that most of the parents who participated in the research constantly (50.2%) or sometimes (47.8%) try to develop their children’s health-friendly habits. 69.8% of the parents, constantly encourage their children to be physically active. Parents with higher education were much more likely to say that they seek to strengthen their child’s health through physical activity (p=0.042) and healthy food (p=0.007). In addition, these parents rated their child’s health better (more often as excellent) than parents without higher education (p=0.012). After the nutrition reform, the respondents noticed more positive changes in the educational institution than at home, these differences in assessments were statistically significant (p<0.001). A statistically significant connection was found that the parents with 3-4 year olds spend much more time cooking together their kids than parents with 5-7 year olds (p <0.001). Parents with higher education (compared to those without it) are less likely to agree with the opinion that children are sufficiently engaged in physical activity in an educational institution (p<0.001). It was confirmed that the higher the parents' education (r =-0.246, p <0.001) and the higher the family income (r=-0.135, p<0.01), the less often the child consumes carbonated sweet drinks. Conclusion: Based on the results of the study, it can be stated that parents and other family members play a key role in shaping children's eating and physical activity habits in early life. Therefore, their contribution to child's first skills is very important, because they usually last a lifetime
