Should archaeology simply cancel plastics?
Malignant! Wicked! Toxic! These terms might bring to mind descriptions of some world leaders or conflict situations, but in actuality they have all been recently used to describe plastics in our material heritage and archaeological sites (Scott 2002 and British Archaeology 2024). While I might use the slang ‘wicked’ to describe the plastic spacesuit worn by Andreas Mogensen, the first Danish astronaut in 2015, I cannot imagine that professional bodies like ICOM and EAA applaud the application of such negatively biased terminology to the materials in our care. In our modern world, where the policies and practices of inclusivity are promoted, I question why plastics are being cancelled in archaeology publications and how it affects their perceived value as artefacts as well as for use in both conservation and as storage materials.First, I will introduce plastics and why they degrade from a scientific perspective. Next, I follow with three cases of heritage materials to illustrate why archaeology should not cancel plastics. I contend that plastics are both a substantial part of our material heritage in modern times and an important tool in contemporary archaeological work

Spaces of Withdrawal:Compassionate Cities Without Citizens
Shortly after Denmark's 2019 national elections, ‘social mixing’ became a key housing policy and urban development strategy. Aiming to end a period of neoliberal speculation, the new Social Democratic government promoted egalitarianism, civic participation and a benevolent public administration. Despite the government touting social mix as a revitalizing force for Danish cities, global data suggest that spatial proximity does not necessarily reduce social distance, as interactions between different social groups are often limited. Concurrently, more urban residents are withdrawing from traditional participatory forms such as neighborhood associations and municipal institutions, which often fail to address their concerns and accommodate their schedules. This essay questions whether the Danish version of social mixing is indeed a panacea for robust welfare urbanism. For those urban residents who may not have the resources to embody and enact the participatory ideal suggested by a welfare society, withdrawal may come to constitute a viable and often pragmatic form of care through connectedness. Paradoxically, then, compassion for the city is here articulated through deliberate and concerted strategies of moving away from major urban collectivitie
Biometrics of stranded white-beaked dolphins (Lagenorhynchus albirostris) in Danish waters
White-beaked dolphins (Lagenorhynchus albirostris) are among the most common toothed whales in the North Sea, but still relatively little is known about their general biology and their biometrics. The white-beaked dolphins are known to breed in the outer Danish waters and have recently been documented as breeding in inner Danish waters too. Here we present the biometrics (stranding location (n=128), stranding month (n=129), sex (n=103), reproductive status (n=103), length (n=102), external body dimensions (n=90) and blubber thickness (n=57; 22 with complete data set)) for individuals stranded between 1979 and 2023. Organ size was measured in 12 individuals. Most white-beaked dolphins (85%) were stranded on the coastline of the outer Danish waters, and with January, May and June as the most common months for stranding. Males made up 41%, of which 73% were immature, while only 36% of the stranded females were immature. Apart from the curve measures around the genital slit, no differences in the relative lengths of external measurements were found between males and females. No seasonal, sexual or geographical differences were found in blubber thickness. The intestines had a median length of 20.5 meter (18.30-23.90 meters) from the duodenum to the pelvic part of the rectum. Measurements of beak to belly button, beak to dorsal fin and tail width were highly correlated (R2<65%, p<0.0001).
