The Effect of 8 Weeks of Yogic Practice on Type-II Diabetes Mellitus and Hemoglobin among 45–55 Age Groups
The purpose of the study was to access the effect of 8 weeks of yogic practice on Type-II diabetes mellitus and hemoglobin among 45–55 age groups. The present study is undertaken among 10 urban peoples, for example, five experimental groups and five control groups. They were selected randomly from rural area of Assam who recently use to practice yoga asanas regularly during the morning time for 1.30 h. A randomized single-group design was adopted in this study. The volunteers were made aware of testing and training procedure. For the collection of the data, blood glucose was measured using (Accu-Chek active blood glucose meter) and hemoglobin level was measured using (StatStrip hemoglobin and hematocrit meter system). To evaluate the hypothesis of the study, descriptive statistics such as mean, SD, and compare mean such as paired “t”-test were applied and were tested at 0.05 level of significant. The statistical findings revealed that there was a significant difference in blood glucose and hemoglobin of the subjects. The blood glucose level of the experimental group P value and t value was 0.001 and 2.7764 and the control group P value and t value was 0.969. Hemoglobin level of the experimental group P value and t value was 0.002 and 2.7764 and the control group P value and t value was 0.883, respectively. On the basis of the statistical result, it was concluded that there was a significant effect of 8 weeks of training on blood glucose and hemoglobin among the age group of 45–55 years
Design and Biological Evaluation of Novel Arylidene Hydrazides Derivatives for Anticonvulsant Activity
The aim of present study was to design and synthesized a novel series of compound which can be evaluate for anticonvulsant, anti-microbial activity. This novel derivatives of Arylidene Hydrazides (4a-4k) were synthesised from o-chloro benzoic acid and aniline via Ulmann reaction. The synthetic method used was simple, rapid and economical found to be accurate and reproducible. The series of chemical reaction was yielded as 11 novel Arylidiene Hydrazide according to the scheme. The chemical structures of the synthesized molecules were confirmed by different lab as well as instrumental analysis like TLC, IR, NMR, and MS. All the synthesised compounds were evaluated for anticonvulsant activity by using two different models on Wistar albino rats. The most common model for anticonvulsant activities are maximal electroshock seizure and subcutaneous pentylenetetrazole (scPTZ) which we were applied for the same. The title compounds 4a & 4b exhibited anticonvulsant potency against all the two screens methods with actuate toxicity. Nephroprotective Activity of Some Indigenous Medicinal Plants in Cisplatin Induced Nephrotoxicity
Aim: The aim of the present investigation is to study the nephroprotective activity of two indigenous medicinal plants. Material and methods: Dried leaves of Alstonia scholaris and Centella asiatica were procured from the medicinal garden and campus of Pharmacy College in the month of September, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India. Around 500 gm dried leaves of Alstonia scholaris and Centella asiatica were coarsely powdered weighed and filled in Soxhlet apparatus for extraction. Wistar albino rats of either sex between 2 and 3 months of age weighing 150-200 gm were used which were procured from the central animal house. The acute oral toxicity studies were carried out according to the guidelines set by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), revised draft guideline 423. Cisplatin (5mg/kg, i.p) was administered to the rats. The study was conducted for 15 days and the rats were divided into 12 groups (n=6). Rsults: Among all the extracts of Centella asiatica, methanolic extract showed a significant effect (P>0.01) as compared to other extracts. This shows that at these doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg the extract have preventive and protective potential against Cisplatin renal toxicity, suggesting it renal preventive role. Among all the extracts of Alstonia scholaris, dichloromethane extract showed a most highly significant effect (P>0.001) as compared to other extracts. Methanolic extract also showed significant effect (P>0.01) as compared to other extract. Petroleum ether showed almost negligible effect. Conclusion: The results obtained in this study have shown that extracts displayed significant nephroprotective activity in both acute and chronic conditions. Besides from the obvious therapeutic importance, these components would be useful in understanding the mechanism of diseases with higher levels of cellular and molecular level
A Comparative Clinical Study of Kanchanar Guggulu and Varuna Shigru Guggulu along with Bala Taila Matra Basti in the Management of Mootraghata w.s.r. to Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia
Background: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a benign enlargement of prostate gland commonly found in elderly men (50% found above 40 year of age) and responsible for major affecting factor for quality of life. The overall incidence rate of BPH is 15/1000 men per year. The present treatment modalities have their own complication and limitations. Hence, here is a need to approach a treatment aspect which can minimize the complication along with major relief effect. According to Ayurveda, considering Vata dosha (ApanaVata) as a main culprit for BPH/Mootraghata, line of treatment was planned to evaluate and compare the clinical efficacy of Kanchanar Guggulu and Varuna Shigru Guggulu, along with Matra basti of Bala Taila svata-kaphahar, mutrakrichahara, Lekhan, and shothahara along with oral medication. Materials and Methods: The patients having signs and symptoms of Mootraghata/BPH were registered and allocated into two groups by computer generated randomization method. Patients were treated with Kanchanar Guggulu orally (1 g thrice a day) in Group A (n = 40) and (1 g thrice a day) Group B (n = 41) for 21 days. Matra basti with 60 ml Bala Taila once a day was given in both groups for 21 days. Results: The result was drawn using appropriate statistical testes in objective as well subjective parameters and also to compare efficacy of both group treatment modalities. The trial drug depicted highly significant results in international prostate symptoms score (IPSS) symptoms, average urine flow rate and prostate size, and post-void residual urine (PVRU) in Group A, whereas Group B possessed highly significant effect on all the mentioned IPSS symptoms with improvement in the QOL, but significant changes were observed in PVRU. Conclusion: Final study concluded that Kanchanar Guggulu and Varuna Shigru Guggulu orally along with Bala Taila Matra bastiis safe and effective in the management of Mootraghata (BPH)
Assessment of Factors Affecting Food Security in Tribal Community
Food security means ensuring food that is available, accessible, and affordable to all the people at all times. Food security is of global concern affecting most of the people in the society at some point of time. In comparison to other population groupings, tribal communities are more vulnerable groups and face socioeconomic disadvantages and food insecurity and are “at risk” of undernutrition. This is mainly due to lack of knowledge, geographical isolation, and suboptimal utilization of health services. Objectives of this study are to determine sociodemographic profile of tribal community, to assess nutritional status, to assess and evaluate the availability, accessibility of various foods, and factors influencing food security in tribal communities. It was a community-based study carried out by random sampling procedure in different villages of Paderu division, Alluri District, Andhra Pradesh by taking permission from the Integrated Tribal Development Agency Project Officer and Administrative Officer for conducting the study. Consent was obtained from the heads of the concerned households and data were collected from the participants who were willing to participate in the study. Information on sociodemographic details, anthropometric measurements, availability of various food items, severity of food insecurity, and factors affecting food insecurity were assessed using pretested schedule which included health and lifestyle related Knowledge, Attitude, and Practices (KAP). The mean body mass index was 21.6 ± 3.3 kg/m2, in which most of the men are normal, whereas women are undernourished. The KAP survey revealed that subjects possessed knowledge and attitude on health and hygiene to some extent but poorly practiced. Food insecurity experience scale revealed that the people were facing moderate to severe food insecurity. This study concludes widespread food insecurity among tribal population and there is need for proper implementation of various programs and schemes to prevent food insecurity and its consequences
A Rare Case of COVID-19-Associated Acute Hemorrhagic Necrotizing Encephalopathy in a Young Patient
Coronavirus disease-19 is an infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, a strain of coronavirus. It can also present with neurological sequelae. It has been related to intracranial cytokine storm. Here, we present a case of acute hemorrhagic necrotizing encephalopathy in a young patient who presented with the characteristic magnetic resonance imaging findings. As the pandemic continues, we can expect that the spectrum of neurological presentations will widen. Knowledge of these neuroimaging features may assist in the detection and early management of neurological complications
Nutritional Assessment of Selected Emerging Adult Women with Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome
Introduction: Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common endocrine conditions, usually begins in adolescence and prominent in more than 75% of the adult population. Aim: The aim of the study was to assess the nutritional status of emerging adult women with PCOS. Objectives: The objectives of the study were to assess the nutritional status of the selected emerging adult women with PCOS using anthropometric, biochemical, and clinical parameters. Methodology: Prospective interventional design was adopted in the study to test the hypothesis framed and stated above. Emerging adult women between 18 and 23 years of age and who were free from other diseases were included for the study from SRHER (DU) and a working women hostel (Vaanavil Hostel) in Porur, Chennai. Anthropometric, biochemical, and clinical assessment were performed for 57 selected emerging adult women “at risk” for PCOS. Results: The mean height, weight, BMI, waist and hip circumference, and WHR of 57 “at risk” emerging adult women was found to be, 160.4± 6.7 cms, 60.7 ± 7.5 kg, 23.6 ± 2.9, 95.9 ± 10.6 cm, 119.1 ± 13.0 cm, and 0.80 ± 0.05, respectively. The mean biochemical parameters, namely, FBS, fasting insulin, total testosterone, total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, and TGL were 98.4 ± 19.7 (mgs/dl), 13.04 ± 6.4 (mcU/ml), 30.9 ± 13.6 (ng/dl), 170.2 ± 36.3 (mgs/dl), 47.7 ± 7.9 (mgs/dl), 115 ± 26.9 (mgs/dl), and 173.5 ± 43.2 (mgs/dl), respectively. It was observed that 25 (44%) had acne, 16 (33%) had hirsutism, 2 (4%) had dark discoloration of the skin, and 5 (9%) had both acne and hirsutism. Conclusion: The mean height was within the standard range; however, the body weight, BMI, waist and hip circumference, and WHR were higher. The mean biochemical parameters analyzed were within the normal range. Acne, hirsutism, and dark patches were observed
Comparative Study of Teramnus labialis and Xanthium strumarium for Anti-Diabetic Property
Introduction: Plants have always been a very good source of drugs. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the common metabolic disorders acquiring around 2.8% of the world’s population. Hence in the present study, we intend to evaluate the antidiabetic property of the Teramnus labialis, Xanthium strumarium. Materials and Methods: T. labialis, Methyl extract Teramnus labialis (METL) and X. strumarium Methyl extract Xanthium strumarium (MEXS) were collected from hills of Tirupathi, dried, and powdered. Healthy male Wistar albino rats induced DM with the Streptozotocin-Nicotinamide and Alloxan induced model were studied on days 1, 7, 14, 21, 28 for the serum glucose (SG), total cholesterol, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein and low-density lipoprotein levels. The observations were compared with the standard drugs Glibenclamide. Results: When extracts administered at low dose in combination exhibited a valuable synergistic activity on mean blood glucose levels, which were almost similar when these results compared with that of standard drug-treated animals. Conclusion: Both the plant extracts were safe in the combination and do not shown any toxicities or drug-related interactions but future pharmacokinetic studies required to validate the given result
Antimalarial Activity of Eco-friendly Green Synthesis of Gold Nanoparticles Using Coccinia grandis (L.) Voigt. against Plasmodium berghei
Malaria is one of the life-threatening infectious diseases caused by the Plasmodium parasites infect red blood cells of humans. The major problem associated with malaria treatment and control is the spread and development of resistance against chemical insecticides. Hence, the plant-based formulations may serve as an alternative source for the development of new drugs for the treatment of malaria. The present study is an attempt to evaluate the antiplasmodial activity of synthesized gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) using the aqueous leaves extract of Coccinia grandis against Plasmodium berghei and characterized by UV-Visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared, X-ray diffraction, Scanning electron microscopy with Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) with selected area (electron) diffraction analyzes. The UV-Vis spectra of Au NPs showed a surface plasmon resonance peak range of 500–600 nm. The TEM image revealed the spherical shape with a mean particle size of 2.82 ± 2.5 nm. The in vivo antimalarial activity of synthesized Au NPs showed a significant (P < 0.001) chemosuppressive effect, with parasite suppression of 88.75%, compared to aqueous extracts of C. grandis showed 69.45% against P. berghei at 100 mg/kg body weight. To sum up, further phytochemical research is required in the future to standardize C. grandis compounds with strong antiplasmodial activity and devise the best alternative nano herbal formulation to replace the synthetic drugs currently in use
Detection of Colistin Resistance in Uropathogenic Carbapenem Resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae
Background: Colistin resistance among carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKp) strains at an accelerated rate poses a serious global threat which limits therapeutic options. Objective: In this study, 203 laboratory-archived uropathogenic K. pneumoniae isolates were screened for carbapenem and colistin resistance. Methods: Carbapenam resistance screening was performed using combined disc test. Colistin resistance was determined for CRKp isolates, according to clinical and laboratory standards institute- European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing guidelines. Polymerase Chain Reaction for carbapenamase genes (blaNDM-1, blaKPC-2 and blaOXA-1) and plasmid-mediated colistin resistance genes (mcr-1-2) were performed for the resistant isolates. Results: About 30% of the CRKp isolates were resistant to colistin; 57.1% and 35.7% of the isolates carried blaNDM-1 and blaOXA-1 gene, respectively. None of the isolates showed positive for blaKPC-2 and mcr (1-2) genes. Conclusion: Colistin resistance in the absence of a plasmid borne transfer mechanism was observed among our CRKp strains. Escalating colistin resistance is a crucial obstacle in treatment of K. pneumoniae infections and repurposing their usage is important to combat and control the resistance
