Evaluating the drivers of banana flowering cycle duration using a stochastic model and on farm production data
International audienceThe use of data produced by farmers to generate knowledge and to inform production decisions is one of the objectives of precision agriculture (PA). Frameworks to analyse and represent those data are now widely available for many crops but are not relevant to banana cropping systems because of its asynchronicity. The average period between two flowering events on the same plant, called CD, is variable, as opposed to most crops whose phenology is synchronized by the seasons. Therefore, CD is a property of interest for understanding yields but it cannot be easily measured in plantations. In this study, a method was proposed to generate information on CD using the producer’s commercially collected production data on flowering from 724 fields over 15 years in a Cameroonian plantation. A new stochastic model based on the development of the banana plant and using CD as a parameter was formulated. This model was then adjusted using temporal flowering data to estimate CD at the field level. Results showed that CD was variable between fields (median of 209 days and standard deviation of 24 days) and spatially structured (autocorrelation ratio of 0.87). The effect of management (irrigation, cultivar) and environmental conditions (temperatures, elevation) on CD was studied. There was no positive effect of thermal time (degree days) vs. Julian days on model fitting and the CD estimation. In contrast, elevation, cultivar and irrigation had an effect on CD. For growers, this highlights the importance of taking into account CD when analysing yields, and not to rely only on the weight of the bunches at harvest. It also shows that production data can be effectively used and mapped to inform production decisions

Investigating suitability of treated wastewater for agriculture in Hawassa, Sidama region, Ethiopia
This study is based on the quality of wastewater from Hawassa University surroundings, which was assessed to determine its suitability for irrigation purposes during 2019. Grab samples of influent and the treated water were taken for assessing for quality parameters. The study revealed that the treated water could be used for irrigation purpose with some moderate restrictions. Even though Electrical Conductivity (EC) and Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) permit to irrigate fruit trees and fodder crops, there is a risk of soil degradation due to high value of Sodium Adsorption Ratio (SAR). Results also indicated that carbonate, potassium and phosphate exceeded the specified limits for wastewater reuse in agriculture. Despite increased nutritive elements, continuous use of treated sewage water for irrigation will make the soil acidic. Analysis of soil parameters indicated that there is an increase in nitrogen, phosphate and potassium nutrient levels considerably to benefit crop production but increase in soil EC is a serious concern.

Production and profitability of small scale broiler farming in selected areas of Dinajpur district, Bangladesh
This study focuses on the production and profitability of the broiler farming by using Cobb-Douglas production function and Benefit-Cost analysis. For this purpose, data were collected from 50 broiler farmers living in Birol and Sadar upazila of Dinajpur district in 2020. The result revealed that involvement in broiler production seems to be profitable for the small-scale broiler farmers for the study areas notifying by net return as Tk. 6681 with a benefit-cost ratio greater than one, whereas the gross return was Tk.193367. The net return over the total cost is 0.075. The production function resulted that feed, medicines and human labor had significant positive effect on production of broiler whereas only rental cost had negative effect. Training had a highly significant (p<0.01) positive effect on production of broiler. Therefore, it can be recommended that training and proper use of drugs and medicine should be encouraged because of their significant impact. Government and NGOs should also arrange more training for improving broiler production in Bangladesh.

Validation and comparison of incoming solar radiation satellite databases on the Atlantic coast of Central Africa
International audienceSolar radiation incident on the Earth's surface is important for the functioning of tropical forests, as it affects the availability of light and water. Due to the lack of in-situ data in tropical forest environments, satellite products and reanalyses are the only ways to estimate solar radiation on a regional scale. An intercomparison of five satellite databases including CERES-EBAF, CERES-SYN1deg, CMSAF-SARAH, CMSAF-CLARA, CAMS-JADE as well as the ERA5 reanalysis, is carried out for the Atlantic coast of Central Africa by evaluating them against two in-situ data sets: the monthly FAOCLIM2 database and original infra-daily data from meteorological stations set up within the framework of ecoclimatic projects. From this inter-comparison we show the differences between these six products and with in-situ data from monthly to daily scales. We also show that the Atlantic coast of Central Africa receives the least amount of solar radiation in all products compared to other regions of Central Africa
Influence du nitrate de plomb sur la flottation sulfurante d'un minerai d'oxyde de cuivre-cobalt: Augmentation de la récupération du cuivre à l'aide de nitrate de plomb
International audienceCopper-cobalt oxide ores contain several minerals that are economically treatable by concentration techniques. The most used technique is froth flotation in which selective reagents are used to recover more valuables. It is, therefore, important to examine the optimal doses of those reagents while investigating the behaviors of minerals at the same time. This study explored the influence of lead nitrate Pb(NO3)2 on the froth flotation of oxide ore to increase valuable metals recoveries. Four factors were investigated including Pb(NO3)2 dosage, its conditioning, its addition dose in the 2nd fraction, and sulfidiser dosage. Other parameters were kept constant. The optimum was found at 25 g/t of Pb(NO3)2, conditioning together with sodium silicate (Na2SiO3) for 5 min, the addition of 5 g/t of Pb(NO3)2 in the 2nd fraction, and 3,000 g/t of sulfidiser. Recoveries in concentrates were 79.51 % Copper (Cu) and 60.27 % Cobalt (Co), with grades of 9.49 and 0.67 %, respectively. The conclusion was that the use of Pb(NO3)2 can considerably improve copper and cobalt recoveries.Les minerais d'oxyde de cuivre-cobalt contiennent plusieurs minéraux qui peuvent être traités économiquement par des techniques de concentration. La technique la plus utilisée est la flottation par mousse dans laquelle des réactifs sélectifs sont utilisés pour récupérer plus d'objets de valeur. Il est donc important d'examiner les doses optimales de ces réactifs tout en étudiant le comportement des minéraux. Cette étude a exploré l'influence du nitrate de plomb Pb (NO3) 2 sur la flottation par mousse du minerai oxydé pour augmenter les récupérations de métaux précieux. Quatre facteurs ont été étudiés dont le dosage du Pb (NO3) 2, son conditionnement, sa dose d'ajout dans la 2ème fraction et le dosage du sulfurant. Les autres paramètres ont été maintenus constants. L'optimum a été trouvé à 25 g/t de Pb (NO3) 2, en conditionnant avec du silicate de sodium (Na2SiO3) pendant 5 min, l'ajout de 5 g/t de Pb (NO3) 2 dans la 2ème fraction, et 3000 g/ t de sulfure. Les récupérations dans les concentrés étaient de 79,51 % de cuivre (Cu) et de 60,27 % de cobalt (Co), avec des teneurs de 9,49 et 0,67 %, respectivement. La conclusion était que l'utilisation de Pb (NO3) 2 peut considérablement améliorer les récupérations de cuivre et de cobalt

CHANGEMENTS CLIMATIQUES ET COOPERATION INTERNATIONALE: REFLEXION SUR L’IMPACT DE L’ACTION DES ORGANISATIONS INTERNATIONALES EN AFRIQUE CENTRALE
International audienceL’action des organisations internationales est essentielle pour lutter contre les changements climatiques en Afrique centrale. Elle va de l’élaboration à la production de nouvelles mesures environnementales et forestières, en passant par leur mise en œuvre dans cette zone géographique. Cependant, plusieurs obstacles entravent sérieusement l’atteinte des objectifs et missions qu’elles se sont librement fixées. L’effectivité des instruments internationaux liés aux problématiquesenvironnementales constitue un réel défi à la gouvernance internationale. Au rang des difficultés qui gangrènent l’action des organisations internationales dans la stabilité du climat, l’on peut indiquer la nature non contraignante et imprécise de certains instruments juridiques ; le caractère disparate et peu usité decertaines normes environnementales. Ilfaut mentionner que la profusion des organisations internationales engendre souvent une mauvaise coordination de leurs actions. À celle-là, l’on peut aussi ajouter d’autres difficultés, notamment les limites intrinsèques du pouvoir de leur action et parfois des ressources financières insuffisantes
