Checklist Strategies to Improve the Reproducibility of Deep Learning Experiments with an Illustration
Poster to be presented during RDA 19th Plenary Meeting, Part Of International Data Week, 20–23 June 2022, Seoul, South KoreaInternational audienceWe report a review of the reproducibility of three publications for Poverty estimation using DL and Remote sensing imagery. For each experiment, we identified the methods and workflows used, if the experiments were not fully reproducible. Although the three use cases were proposed for a specific task (poverty estimation), we believe that the evaluation methods could be applied to more general Deep Learning tasks, where difficulties might include (a) a lack of dataset specificity (and the metadata related with it), (b) inadequate description of the DL methodology, (c) the implementation methodology, and the infrastructure used. We also feel that these recommendations can be extended to other domains such as medical, climatic, biodiversity, industrial, military, etc

LUCAS: an Agent-Based model for Understanding Adaptation Strategies in the Mekong Delta
International audienceThe Mekong Delta area will be deeply impacted by effects of the Climate Change, but also of salinization, sand mining, and underground water extraction, inducing changes and adaptations at individual (mainly farmers) and institutional (province and region) levels. In the Vietnamese Mekong Delta, local provinces play an important role in the decision of adaptation strategies and resource exploitation management. In addition, as some provinces can share agro-ecological regions, the coordination of provinces’ actions appear to be a necessary factor to adapt efficiently to climate change issues. This paper aims to develop an Agent–Based model for land use change adaptation strategies modeling (named LUCAS). LUCAS is based on a combination of social,economic, and environmental dynamics. It simulates land-use change and can test various land use adaptation strategies in the context of climate change. LUCAS simulates the complex interactions amongst individual and provincial decision-makers to build appropriate adaptation strategies of land-use change. The experiment results showed a picture of land-use in the Mekong Delta by 2030, with a vision through to 2050 in order to adapt to climate change based on coordination in the regions and individual adaptation of farmers. The results showed that the model can provide the ways for adaptation planning
Acceptabilité de la posthectomie infantile à Mayotte en 2021
Background : Nowadays, safe Child Medical Male Circumcision (CMMC) does not exist in Mayotte. Methods : A multi site descriptive cross sectional epidemiological study was conducted in Mayotte. Based on an individual hetero questionnaire for parents at the birth of their male child in one of the 5 maternity wards of Mayotte. A descriptive and multivariate analysis was used to describe the factors associated with the acceptability of CMMC.Results : Data collection as occurred during 8 days in the 5 maternity wards in Mayotte. A total, 104 respondents participated (90 mothers and 14 fathers) with an average age of 30. The great majority of the respondents (88.5%) answered that they wanted to circumcise their child under medically supervised conditions. Bivariate analysis showed that the acceptability of CMMC was significantly associated with the initial choice of the practitioner (traditional or medical ; p = 0,002), the place (home or hospital-based ; p = 0,03) and with the consideration of risk of a CMMC done outside of the medical setting (p = 0,023).Conclusion : The results of this study show a high acceptability of medical child circumcision by the population if it was proposed by the Mayotte’s hospital. This study provides a proper understanding of cultural factors associated with the acceptability of CMMC which will ultimately enhance the successful implementation of the CMMC program in Mayotte.Introduction : À ce jour, il n’existe pas de filière de prise en charge de la posthectomie infantile (PI) à Mayotte.Méthode : Il s’agissait d’une étude épidémiologique transversale descriptive multisite. Basée sur un questionnaire hétéro administré aux parents d’enfant de sexe masculin naissant dans une des 5 maternités de Mayotte. Une analyse descriptive et multivariée a été utilisée pour décrire les facteurs associés à l’acceptabilité de la PI.Résultats : Le recueil s’est déroulé sur 8 jours dans les 5 maternités de Mayotte en 2021. Au total, 104 personnes ont participé à l’étude (90 mères et 14 pères) d’une moyenne d’âge de 30 ans. La majorité des participants (88,5%) a répondu favorablement à la circoncision de leur enfant si elle était proposée dans des conditions médicalement encadrées. L’analyse bivariée a montré une association significative avec : le choix initial du praticien (traditionnel ou médical ; p = 0,002), l’endroit (au domicile ou en structure ; p = 0,03) ainsi qu’avec la considération du risque en dehors d’un cadre médical (p = 0,023).Conclusion : Cette étude montre une forte acceptabilité de la population à la PI si elle était proposée dans les dispensaires ou hôpital de Mayotte. Cette étude montre certains facteurs culturels associés au choix de la PI. Elle permettrait d’aider à la mise en place d’une filière pour la PI à Mayotte
Identification of a novel vitivirus from pineapple in Reunion Island
Research SquareWe report the complete genome sequencing of a novel member of the genus Vitivirus in the family Betaflexiviridae (subfamily Trivirinae) infecting pineapple. The full genome of this virus was obtained from total RNAs extracted from pineapple leaf samples collected in Reunion Island, using a combination of high-throughput sequencing technologies. It is 6,757 nt long, excluding the poly(A) tail, and shares all the hallmarks of vitiviruses. Phylogenetic analyses performed on the replication-associated protein and capsid protein gene sequences unambiguously place this new virus, for which we propose the name “pineapple vitivirus A”, in the Vitivirus genus

Genèse et développement d’une rivalité rugbystique entre la Nouvelle-Zélande et l’Afrique du Sud avant l’apartheid (1899-1948) : constructions identitaires, jeux de pouvoirs impériaux et discriminations raciales
Since its inception, the rugby rivalry between South Africa and New Zealand has been much written about because of its complex and peculiar nature. Over the years, a number of historians (Nauright, 1993; Buckley, 1996; Dobson, 1996), sports journalists (Labuschagne, 1974; Harding & Williams, 2000), activists (Thompson, 1975; Richards, 1999) and even politicians (Templeton, 1998) have examined its history. Most of them usually situate the starting point of this unique duel in 1921, when the first New Zealand tour by the South African national rugby team took place. In this thesis, I wish to show that competitions between these two former British colonies began much earlier, as soon as the first rugby matches were played between New Zealanders and South Africans during the Second Boer War (1899-1902). These tournaments raise at least three socio-political questions through which I analyze, in a chronological order, the history of rugby exchanges between two nations under, construction (Renan, 1882; Hobsbawm, 1990). The aim is, on the one hand, to highlight the process that led to the representation of the South African and New Zealand rugby unions within the international rugby body (International RugbyFootball Board). On the other hand, I examine the evolution of racial relations between players of European origin and indigenous players. Finally, I focus on the creation of national identities in two former territories of the British Empire, which emancipated themselves from the central London-based power at different rates. Using digitized archives, I thus attempt to trace the origins of this rugby rivalry and the racism that characterizes it while shedding light on the logic of imperial domination that were exercised on both the colonist and the colonized (Gleyse, 2004).Depuis qu’elle existe, la rivalité rugbystique entre l’Afrique du Sud et la Nouvelle-Zélande a fait couler beaucoup d’encre du fait de son originalité et de sa nature complexe. Ainsi, au fur et à mesure de son développement, un certain nombre d’historiens (Buckley, 1996 ; Dobson, 1996 ; Nauright, 1993), de journalistes sportifs (Labuschagne, 1974 ; Harding & Williams, 2000), d’activistes (Thompson, 1975 ; Richards, 1999) et même des hommes politiques (Templeton, 1998) se sont penchés sur son histoire. D’une manière générale, ils s’accordent à situer le point de départ de ce duel singulier en 1921, date de la première tournée de l’équipe nationale de rugby sud-africaine en terre néo-zélandaise. Avec ce travail de thèse, je souhaite montrer que les compétitions entre ces deux ex-colonies britanniques démarrent bien plus tôt, dès les premiers matchs de rugby disputés entre Néo-Zélandais et Sud-Africains pendant la seconde guerre des Boers (1899-1902). Ces tournois font surgir au moins trois questions socio-politiques par le biais desquelles j’analyse, de manière chronologique, l’histoire des échanges rugbystiques entre deux nations en construction (Renan, 1882 ; Hobsbawm, 1990). Il s’agit d’une part, de mettre en évidence le processus qui conduit à la représentation des fédérations sud-africaine et néo-zélandaise de rugby au sein de l’instance internationale du rugby (International Rugby Football Board). D’autre part, j’examine l’évolution des rapports entre joueurs d’origine européenne et joueurs indigènes. Enfin, je porte une attention particulière à la création d’identités nationales dans deux territoires de l’Empire britannique qui s’émancipent à des rythmes différents du pouvoir central londonien. À partir d’archives numérisées, je tente ainsi de retracer l’origine de cette concurrence rugbystique et du racisme qui la caractérise en mettant en lumière les logiques de la domination impériale qui s’exercent autant sur le colon que sur le colonisé (Gleyse, 2004)

Le systèmelinéaire résultant est résolu par une méthode rapide, appeléeGPILE (Generalized Propagation Inside Layer Expansion), quipermet de réduire la complexité de l’inversion de la matriceimpédance et d’isoler chacune des contributions au processusglobal de diffusion. Satellite magnetic data reveal interannual waves in Earth's core
International audienceThe Earth's magnetic field displays variations on a broad range of time scales from years to hundreds of millions of years. The last two decades of global and continuous satellite geomagnetic field monitoring have considerably enriched the knowledge on the rapid physical processes taking place in the Earth's outer core. Identification of axisymmetric torsional Alfvén waves with subdecadal periods from observatory and satellite data has given access to an averaged intensity of the magnetic field in the Earth's core interior. A significant part of the rapid signal, however, resides in non-axisymmetric motions. Their origin has remained elusive as previous studies of magnetohydrodynamic waves in the Earth's core mainly focused on their possible signature on centennial time scales. Here, we identify non-axisymmetric wavelike patterns in the equatorial region of the core surface from the observed geomagnetic variations. These wavelike features have large spatial scales, interannual periods in the vicinity of 7 years, amplitudes reaching 3 km/yr and coherent westward drift at phase speeds of about 1500 km/yr. We interpret and model these flows as the signature of Magneto-Coriolis (MC) eigenmodes. Their identification offers a way to probe the cylindrical radial component of the magnetic field inside Earth's core. It follows from our work that there is no need for a stratified layer at the top of the core to account for the rapid geomagnetic field changes
