Interactive simulation of plume and pyroclastic volcanic ejections
International audienceWe propose an interactive animation method for the ejection of gas and ashes mixtures in volcano eruption. Our novel, layered solution combines a coarse-grain, physically-based simulation of the ejection dynamics with a consistent, procedural animation of multi-resolution details. We show that this layered model can be used to capture the two main types of ejection, namely ascending plume columns composed of rapidly rising gas carrying ash which progressively entrains more air, and pyroclastic flows which descend the slopes of the volcano depositing ash, ultimately leading to smaller plumes along their way.We validate the large-scale consistency of our model through comparison with geoscience data, and discuss both real-time visualization and off-line, realistic rendering

Description of two new species of Turanogryllini crickets (Orthoptera, Gryllidae, Gryllinae) from Cameroon, with identification keys for African species
International audienceDuring a Gryllidae survey in the Southern Cameroonian Plateau, two new species of the tribe Turanogryllini Otte, 1987 were discovered and described, namely Turanogryllus zamakoensis Um Nyobe, Kekeunou & Bilong Bilong sp. nov. and Neogryllopsis gorochovi Um Nyobe, Kekeunou & Ma sp. nov. This finding extends the known distribution of the genera Turanogryllus Tarbinsky, 1940 and Neogryllopsis Otte, 1983. New environments are also recorded for these crickets, and an identification key for African species is proposed for these two genera.
Background : The psychosocial risks of SAMU-center 15 professionals are a major issue because they affect all staff and therefore impact the care of patients. Medical Dispatcher Assistant (MDA) is at this time the first intervener in the care of a patient in pre hospital. He is daily exposed to emergencies, anxiety and stress of patients that he must know how to manage as well as possible in order to make fair, decisive, and sometimes vital decisions. The use of medical hypnosis in the management of anxiety no longer has to prove itself in the field of care. It is also known that medical hypnosis has an effect on both, the practitioner and the patient. No studies have been done so far between the use of medical hypnosis and MDA anxieties. The aim of our study is to show that the use of hypnotic communication during phone call and self-hypnosis by MDA would reduce their anxieties.Method : The CHARM is a monocentric, prospective, before-and-after, and interventional study. 14 MDA were followed at the University Hospital of North Reunion (France). The primary outcome is the decrease of anxiety after medical hypnosis training. The MDA complete an STAI YA anxiety questionnaire over 3 consecutive days at the beginning and at the end of a day work, two weeks before and two weeks after a 3-day medical hypnosis training. The secondary outcome is the decrease of stress evaluated via a numerical stress scale (EN) from 0 to 10 performed under the same conditions as the STAI YA. This study also includes a qualitative analysis which explore the experience of perceived changes of the anxiety level at work after training in conversational hypnosis and self-hypnosis in MDA through focus group interviews conducted two weeks after the training.Result : A total of 14 MDA had been enrolled. We observe a significant difference between the means of the STAI Y-A score before and after training (p=0.002). In addition, MDA after training were less likely to have moderate to very high anxiety (STAI YA >45) compared to before training (p = 0.020). There was a significant difference between the pre- and post-training stress score means (p6) compared to before training (p = 0.0078). The qualitative analysis found that anxiety and stress decreased after training. It suggests that medical hypnosis should be part of the MDA initial studies. Medical hypnosis would allow an improvement in the quality of work. Conclusion : According to our study, the training Medical Dispatcher Assistant in conversational hypnosis and self-hypnosis has a beneficial effect on anxiety and stress. It suggests that this new tool should be in the MDA studies to cope with psychosocial risks and highlighting the human relationship with the patient. A controlled study with a larger population group can be envisaged according to the CHARM study results.
The EMSO Generic Instrument Module (EGIM) : Standardized and Interoperable Instrumentation for Ocean Observation
International audienceThe oceans are a fundamental source for climate balance, sustainability of resources and life on Earth, therefore society has a strong and pressing interest in maintaining and, where possible, restoring the health of the marine ecosystems. Effective, integrated ocean observation is key to suggesting actions to reduce anthropogenic impact from coastal to deep-sea environments and address the main challenges of the 21st century, which are summarized in the UN Sustainable Development Goals and Blue Growth strategies. The European Multidisciplinary Seafloor and water column Observatory (EMSO), is a European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC), with the aim of providing long-term observations via fixed-point ocean observatories in key environmental locations across European seas from the Arctic to the Black Sea. These may be supported by ship-based observations and autonomous systems such as gliders. In this paper, we present the EMSO Generic Instrument Module (EGIM), a deployment ready multi-sensor instrumentation module, designed to measure physical, biogeochemical, biological and ecosystem variables consistently, in a range of marine environments, over long periods of time. Here, we describe the system, features, configuration, operation and data management. We demonstrate, through a series of coastal and oceanic pilot experiments that the EGIM is a valuable standard ocean observation module, which can significantly improve the capacity of existing ocean observatories and provides the basis for new observatories. The diverse examples of use included the monitoring of fish activity response upon oceanographic variability, hydrothermal vent fluids and particle dispersion, passive acoustic monitoring of marine mammals and time series of environmental variation in the water column. With the EGIM available to all the EMSO Regional Facilities, EMSO will be reaching a milestone in standardization and interoperability, marking a key capability advancement in addressing issues of sustainability in resource and habitat management of the oceans
Neogene South Asian monsoon rainfall and wind histories diverged due to topographic effects
International audienceThe drivers of the evolution of the South Asian Monsoon remain widely debated. An intensification of monsoonal rainfall recorded in terrestrial and marine sediment archives from the earliest Miocene (23–20 million years ago (Ma)) is generally attributed to Himalayan uplift. However, Indian Ocean palaeorecords place the onset of a strong monsoon around 13 Ma, linked to strengthening of the southwesterly winds of the Somali Jet that also force Arabian Sea upwelling. Here we reconcile these divergent records using Earth system model simulations to evaluate the interactions between palaeogeography and ocean–atmosphere dynamics. We show that factors forcing the South Asian Monsoon circulation versus rainfall are decoupled and diachronous. Himalayan and Tibetan Plateau topography predominantly controlled early Miocene rainfall patterns, with limited impact on ocean–atmosphere circulation. The uplift of the East African and Middle Eastern topography played a pivotal role in the establishment of the modern Somali Jet structure above the western Indian Ocean, while strong upwelling initiated as a direct consequence of the emergence of the Arabian Peninsula and the onset of modern-like atmospheric circulation. Our results emphasize that although elevated rainfall seasonality was probably a persistent feature since the India–Asia collision in the Paleogene, modern-like monsoonal atmospheric circulation only emerged in the late Neogene
Critical point and supercritical regime of MgO
International audienceThe position of the critical point determines the top of the liquid-vapor coexistence dome, and it is a physical parameter of fundamental importance in the study of high-energy shocks, including those associated with large planetary impacts. For most major planetary materials, such as oxides and silicates, the estimated position of the critical point is below 1 g /cm3 at temperatures above 5000 K. Here we compute the position of the critical point of one of the most ubiquitous materials: MgO. For this we perform first-principles molecular dynamics simulations. We find the critical density to be in the 0.45-0.6 g /cm3 range and the critical temperature in the 6500-7000 K range. We investigate in detail the behavior of MgO in the subcritical and supercritical regimes, and we provide insight into the structure and chemical speciation. We see a change in Mg-O speciation toward lower degrees of coordination as the temperature is increased from 4000 to 10 000 K. This change in speciation is less pronounced at higher densities. We observe the liquid-gas separation in nucleating nanobubbles at densities below the liquid spinodal. The majority of the chemical species forming the incipient gas phase consists of isolated Mg and O atoms and some MgO and O2 molecules. We find that the ionization state of the atoms in the liquid phase is close to the nominal charge, but it almost vanishes close to the liquid-gas boundary and in the gas phase, which is consequently largely atomic
Introduction : The health and social consequences of alcohol use disorders in Reunion are serious and are concentrated on the most disadvantaged part of its population. The historical and cultural context favors singular consumption. This impacts the consumer's entourage who regrets a lack of care. Their suffering is described by the concept of codependency which explains the complexity of these situations. The floor is given to general practitioners from Reunion so that they can deliver their experiences, feelings and expectations concerning the care of these relatives.Method : Qualitative phenomenological study analyzing the semi-directed interviews of nine liberal general practitioners practicing in Reunion. Results : Voluntary but often inexperienced, the participants are unfamiliar with the concept of codependency. They express empathy for this fragile population and they make the attending physician a central player in supporting patients requesting follow-up. The emancipation of the loved one depends mainly on the withdrawal of the drinker, a task experienced as complex and difficult. Multiple constraints impact the work of the general practitioner and the suffering relatives, limiting their identification and follow-up.Conclusion : The approaches of the participants disagree with the recommendations for care placing the entourage at the center of a process where withdrawal from AUD is not imperative. The education of doctors and the population as well as better identification of resources seem useful.
