    Bringing the Past to Life: Teaching English Grammar Through Folklore and Visual Storytelling in Indonesian Classrooms

    Teaching English grammar, particularly tenses, presents a significant challenge in the Indonesian context, where traditional methods often fail to engage students effectively. This study investigates the use of Indonesian folklore combined with visual aids as a strategy for teaching the English simple past tense. The research explores the potential of integrating culturally relevant content with pictures to enhance grammar acquisition and student engagement. A mixed-methods approach was employed, consisting of pre- and post-tests, classroom observations, and student surveys. The findings reveal that students exposed to folklore and picture-based instruction showed a 24% improvement in grammar comprehension, significantly outperforming their peers in the control group, who received traditional grammar instruction. The experimental group also exhibited higher levels of engagement, with students demonstrating greater enthusiasm and active participation in learning activities. These results suggest that culturally contextualized materials, coupled with visual aids, foster a more interactive and enjoyable learning environment, ultimately improving students\u27 ability to apply grammatical structures in real communication. This study highlights the potential of folklore as a pedagogical tool, offering valuable insights for enhancing grammar instruction and motivating learners in the Indonesian educational context

    The Drill and Practice Method for Teaching the Simple Past Tense to Non-English Major Students

    This study aims to improve the understanding of the simple past tense among non-English major students using the drill and practice method. The study employed a one-group pre-test-post-test design. The sample consisted of 62 first-semester theology students enrolled in the General English course at Universitas Kristen Artha Wacana, Indonesia. The pre-test was conducted by testing ten items on the simple past tense, covering affirmative, negative, and interrogative forms. Subsequently, students participated in DP sessions, which included material introduction, modeling, guided practice, immediate feedback, repetition practice, individual assessment, discussion and clarification, independent practice, reinforcement, and closing. Following the intervention, a post-test was conducted to measure improvements in understanding. The data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon test. Results indicated a significant improvement in students’ understanding of simple past tense, with a Wilcoxon value of -4.936 and asymptotic significance below 0.001. Additionally, accuracy rates and response times improved, while the number of unanswered questions decreased. The study concludes that the DP method, combined with targeted feedback, is effective in enhancing grammar skills for non-English major students, although some learners may require further instructional adjustments. While the study reports positive outcomes, it lacks a discussion of limitations, including its single group design, limited generalizability due to the specific institution, and the absence of a control group.  Future research should address these limitations by investigating long-term effects and involving larger sample sizes

    PROFIL ECOLITERACY MAHASISWA PENDIDIKAN BIOLOGI DALAM MATA KULIAH EKOLOGI HEWAN

    This study aims to determine the ecoliteracy skills of students in animal ecology courses. This research was conducted on 174 biology education students at six universities in South Sulawesi. This study used descriptive quantitative research. Data on ecoliteracy skills were collected using a multiple choice test technique of 25 items that had been validated by two material experts. The results of this study indicate that based on Goleman\u27s five indicators of ecoliteracy, there are three indicators that are still classified as low, namely aspects of practice, visibility and evaluation of facts while the other two indicators are classified as excellent, namely aspects of empathy and real solutions.Ecoliteracy merupakan kemampuan untuk memahami sistem ekologi dan mengintegrasikannya ke dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui kemampuan ecoliteracy mahasiswa pada mata kuliah ekologi hewan. Penelitian ini dilakukan terhadap 174 mahasiswa pendidikan biologi di enam universitas yang berada di Sulawesi Selatan. Penelitian ini menggunakan jenis penelitian kuantitatif deskriptif, dengan tujuan untuk menganalisis dan menggambarkan tingkat kemampuan ecoliteracy di tingkat perguruan tinggi. Data kemampuan ecoliteracy dikumpulkan menggunakan teknik tes pilihan ganda sebanyak 25 butir soal yang telah divalidasi oleh dua orang ahli materi. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa berdasarkan lima indikator ecoliteracy menurut Goleman, terdapat lima indikator yang masih tergolong rendah, yaitu aspek empati, solusi nyata, praktik, visibilitas, dan evaluasi fakta. Temuan ini menunjukkan perlunya penguatan aspek-aspek tersebut dalam proses pembelajaran, terutama dalam mata kuliah ekologi hewan, agar dapat meningkatkan pemahaman dan keterlibatan mahasiswa dalam isu-isu lingkungan yang lebih nyata dan aplikatif. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian ini maka pihak perguruan tinggi dapat merancang kebijakan yang lebih tepat untuk meningkatkan kemampuan ecoliteracy mahasiswa secara menyeluruh

    E-sport: Persepsi, Kompetisi Digital, dan Lokalitas (Studi Kasus Komunitas Unhas E-sport)

    E-sport have evolved from a form of entertainment into a global industry with significant social, economic, and cultural impacts. While most studies focus more on negative impact of e-sport, very limited studies on the positive impact on this kind of sport, particularly among university students. This article explores e-sports practices within the university environment as a form of digital competition that goes beyond entertainment and becomes a medium for identity production, symbolic capital, as well as local expression. Using a qualitative approach and a case study of the Unhas E-sport community, data were collected through participant observation and in-depth interviews with ten informants, consisting of three e-sport professional players, four e-sport fans, and three e-sport tournament organizers. The findings reveal four key points: first, e-sports is perceived not merely as gaming, but as a career path and form of digital labor requiring discipline and strategy; second, campus-level tournaments are organized professionally, demanding intensive preparation and high mental resilience; third, the competition process involves media distribution strategies that construct reputation and symbolic capital; and fourth, e-sports practices reflect Makassar’s local expressions through team identity, cultural narratives, and the use of digital spaces. Overall, e-sports functions as a symbolic arena and microeconomic environment that fuses global gaming culture with local values, while also shaping a new digital habitus among university students

    Analisis Pendapatan Usaha Peternakan Ayam Broiler di Desa Abbanuangnge Kecamatan Maniangpajo Kabupaten Wajo

    Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis pendapatan dan kelayakan usaha peternakan ayam broiler di Desa Abbanuangnge, Kecamatan Maniangpajo, Kabupaten Wajo. Permasalahan utama dalam usaha ini adalah tingginya biaya produksi, terutama untuk kandang, pakan, dan bibit ayam (DOC), yang dapat menyebabkan peternak beralih ke usaha lain. Penelitian kualitatif ini melibatkan seluruh populasi peternak ayam broiler di desa tersebut, yaitu 5 peternak. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa total biaya produksi selama 3 periode adalah Rp. 7.542.608.201, dengan rata-rata biaya produksi setiap responden sebesar Rp. 1.508.521.640, sementara penerimaan mencapai Rp.8.473.682.345, dengan rata-rata penerimaan setiap responden sebesar Rp.1.694.736.469, sehingga pendapatan yang diperoleh responden selama tiga peride adalah Rp. 931.174.188, dengan rata-rata pendapatan setiap responden sebesar Rp. 186.234.838.  Analisis Break Event Point (BEP) dan R/C ratio menunjukkan bahwa usaha peternakan ayam broiler di Desa Abbanuangnge menguntungkan, efisien, dan layak untuk dikembangkan. Hasil penelitian ini memberikan informasi bagi peternak dan pihak terkait dalam upaya meningkatkan efisiensi dan berkelanjutan usaha peternakan ayam broiler.  Dengan memahami aspek biaya, produksi, penerimaan, dan pendapatan, peternak dapat merancang strategi yang lebih efektif untuk mengoptimalkan sumber daya dan meningkatkan profitabilitas.  Selain itu, hasil penelitian ini juga menjadi acuan bagi pemerintah dan lembaga terkait dalam merumuskan kebijakan yang mendukung perkembangan sektor peternakan ayam broiler, seperti penyediaan subsidi pakan, akses permodalan, serta pendampungan teknis bagi peternak.  Dengan demikian, penelitian ini berkontribusi dalam mendorong pertumbuhan usaha peternakan yang lebih produktif, efisien, dan berkelanjutan

    Investigating the Link Between Glossophobia and Learning Styles: A Mixed-Methods Study in Secondary Education

    Glossophobia, or the fear of public speaking, is a widespread form of social anxiety that can significantly hinder students’ oral performance. This study investigates the relationship between glossophobia and students’ learning styles in the context of classroom speech activities. Employing a mixed-methods design, the research integrates quantitative data gathered through the Taylor Manifest Anxiety Scale (TMAS) and the Barsch Learning Style Inventory with qualitative insights obtained from classroom observations and semi-structured interviews. A total of 41 senior high school students participated in the initial survey, from which 13 individuals identified with moderate to high anxiety levels were purposively selected for in-depth analysis. The findings reveal that visual learners exhibit higher levels of speech-related anxiety compared to other learning style types. These results suggest a potential correlation between learning style preferences and students’ susceptibility to glossophobia. The study emphasizes the pedagogical importance of tailoring instructional strategies to accommodate diverse learning styles as a means of mitigating public speaking anxiety in educational settings

    Pengaruh Pemanfaatan Reading Corner terhadap Literasi Membaca Siswa Kelas Tinggi Di UPT SD Negeri 3 Watang Sidenreng

    Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan pengaruh pemanfaatan Reading Corner terhadap kemampuan literasi membaca siswa kelas tinggi di UPT SD Negeri 3 Watang Sidenreng. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan desain eksperimen. Populasi penelitian adalah seluruh siswa di sekolah tersebut yang berjumlah 131 orang, dengan sampel sebanyak 49 siswa. Teknik pengumpulan data meliputi dokumentasi, observasi, angket, dan tes. Analisis data dilakukan melalui analisis deskriptif, uji homogenitas, dan independent sample t-test. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pemanfaatan Reading Corner berpengaruh signifikan terhadap peningkatan kemampuan membaca siswa. Hal ini ditunjukkan oleh nilai signifikansi uji t-test sebesar 0,000 (< 0,05), yang berarti terdapat perbedaan rata-rata kemampuan membaca antara kelompok eksperimen dan kelompok kontrol. Nilai rata-rata (mean) post-test kelompok eksperimen sebesar 86,00 lebih tinggi dibandingkan kelompok kontrol yang sebesar 72,08. Berdasarkan hasil tersebut, hipotesis alternatif (Ha) diterima, yaitu terdapat pengaruh pemanfaatan Reading Corner terhadap minat dan kemampuan membaca siswa, sementara hipotesis nol (Ho) ditolak

    Development of Canva-Based Comic Learning Media on Temperature, Heat and Expansion Material

    Penelitian ini bertujuan mengembangkan media pembelajaran komik yang valid, praktis, dan efektif untuk topik Suhu, Kalor, dan Pemuaian. Menggunakan model pengembangan ASSURE dalam kerangka Penelitian dan Pengembangan (R&D), komik ini dibuat dengan aplikasi Canva. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa komik memiliki kevalidan tinggi: 3,41 untuk aspek kemediaan (ahli desain media) dan 3,72 untuk aspek konten materi (ahli materi). Dari sisi kepraktisan, uji coba kelas riil menunjukkan angka 92,18 (kategori sangat baik) berdasarkan respons siswa. Sementara itu, keefektifan komik terbukti dari rata-rata hasil belajar kelas 84,21, melampaui Kriteria Ketuntasan Tujuan Pembelajaran (KKTP) 75, serta nilai n-gain 0,779 yang termasuk dalam kategori tinggi. Kesimpulannya, media pembelajaran komik ini berhasil dikembangkan sebagai alat bantu belajar yang terkendali dan efektifThis research aimed to develop a comic-based learning media that is valid, practical, and effective for the topic of Temperature, Heat, and Expansion. Utilizing the ASSURE development model within a Research and Development (R&D) framework, the comic was created using the Canva application. The results indicate a high validity for the comic: 3.41 for the media aspect (according to media design experts) and 3.72 for the material content aspect (according to material experts). In terms of practicality, real-class trials showed a score of 92.18 (categorized as very good) based on student responses. Meanwhile, the effectiveness of the comic was evident from the average class learning outcomes of 84.21, surpassing the Minimum Mastery Criteria (KKTP) of 75, and an n-gain score of 0.779, which falls into the high category.     Tongkonan community forest has an important role in Torajanese livelihood. The forest could serve daily needs and diverse ceremonial materials for local people. The existence of this forest also has an ecological function in soil and water preservation. This research aims to study the structure and composition of vegetation in tongkonan community forest and determine the useful plant species for the local people. The research method was done by counting and identifying plants in plot samples for the study of the plant community structure and composition and brief interviews with the local people to reveal the purpose of the plant species.  There are 30 plants species that found in plot samples belongs to 28 genera and 18 families. According to the family level, the dominant plant species in observation were Fabaceae (14,28 %) and Myrtaceae (10,71 %). Pine tree (Pinus merkusii) had the highest basal area of 7163.054 cm2 and the species with the highest Important Value of 35.486 %. Several species, however commonly cultivated in this area such as kakao (Theobroma cacao) and kopi (coffea robusta). Generally in the village, around 35 plant species (51,47 %) are used as a source of food, while 39 species (57,35 %) are used for other purposes, such as traditional medicine, firewood, materials for tools and crafting, and ornamental plant species

    Peningkatan Motivasi Belajar Bahasa Inggris dengan Memanfaatkan Aplikasi Media Sosial di MA Darussalam Barandasi

    English is often perceived as a difficult and boring subject, which can lead students to become indifferent and unmotivated to learn it. This issue is also prevalent among the  students of class III IPS at MA Darussalam Barandasi. On the other hand, spending time on social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat is one of their favorite pastimes. These students often spend hours on these platforms daily, with little to no benefit for their studies. A team of lecturers from the English Education Department and students from the KEMAL program at FKIP Universitas Muslim Maros recognized this as a problem that needed a solution. A creative and effective approach was required—one that could combine both interests into a meaningful and beneficial activity. As a result, a service program was developed with the aim of boosting students’ motivation to learn English through the use of social media applications. The outcomes of this initiative were very promising. Students responded positively, with enthusiasm and excitement, to the idea of learning English via social media. They began following several educational accounts, carefully engaging with content related to English learning materials. This content was then studied and practiced effectively. Students also agreed that using social media made English learning sessions more enjoyable, which in turn motivated them to engage with the subject with greater enthusiasm.Mata pelajaran bahasa Inggris sering dianggap sebagai mata pelajaran yang sulit dan membosankan, hal ini seringkali menjadi penyebab siswa bersikap masa bodoh dan tidak berupaya untuk mempelajari. Hal serupa juga menjangkiti siswa kelas III IPA MA Darussalam Barandasi. Di sisi lain, menghabiskan waktu bermain dengan media sosial seperti TikTok, Instagram dan Snapchat merupakan kegiatan favorit mereka. Siswa ini sering menghabiskan waktu hingga berjam-jam dalam sehari tanpa adanya manfaat terkait studi mereka. Tim dosen Prodi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris dan mahasiswa program KEMAL FKIP Universitas Muslim Maros melihat ini sebagai permasalahan yang patut diselesaikan. Dibutuhkan kegiatan solutif dimana kedua hal di atas dapat dipadukan menjadi satu kegiatan pengabdian yang bermanfaat. Oleh karena itu disusunlah pengabdian dengan tujuan meningkatkan motivasi belajar bahasa Inggris dengan memanfaatkan aplikasi media sosial. Hasil pengabdian ini menunjukkan bahwa siswa memberikan respon yang positif, antusias dan bersemangat untuk belajar bahasa Inggris dengan memanfaatkan media sosial. Sejumlah akun-akun edukatif kemudian mereka follow dan cermati dengan baik, sehingga konten-kontennya terkait materi belajar bahasa Inggris kemudian dipelajari dengan baik dan dipraktekkan. Siswa juga menyetujui bahwa belajar bahasa Inggris dengan memanfaatkan media sosial menjadikan sesi belajar bahasa Inggris lebih menyenangkan sehingga memotivasi mereka belajar lebih bersemangat
