Antimicrobial resistance of Enterococcus isolates from poultry farms in the Republic of Serbia (Autonomous Province of Vojvodina)

    No full text
Enterococcus species are significant intestinal commensals of animals, including poultry. However, they have emerged as important opportunistic infective agents in both veterinary and human medicine as well as major nosocomial pathogens, owing to their increasing antimicrobial resistance. This research aimed to investigate the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance patterns of Enterococcus spp. isolated from poultry farms in the north of Serbia. A total of 40 samples of overshoes or feces were collected from 40 poultry farms and analyzed for the presence of Enterococcus spp. using PCR or MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry for their identification. The number of isolates was 40 and included 11 isolates from laying hens, 2 isolates from turkeys, 3 from broiler breeders, and 24 from broilers. The Kirby–Bauer disk diffusion method was used to test for antibiotic susceptibility in accordance with the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute and EUCAST guidelines. The results showed that Enterococcus faecalis was isolated from 37.5% farms, and E. faecium from 42.5%. E. hirae was identified in 15% of poultry establishments, and E. durans and E. thialandicus on 2.5%. Notably, resistance to erythromycin, streptomycin, fluoroquinolones, and tetracyclines among the frequently used antibiotics was found. Furthermore, 35% of the isolates had multidrug resistance (MDR). In order to prevent the spread of antibiotic resistance in chicken farming and protect the health of the public and animals alike, our findings highlight the critical need for improved surveillance and control measures. To effectively establish a containment strategy for Enterococcus spp. isolated from poultry farms, more research into the processes behind their antibiotic resistance is required

    Get PDF
The study aimed to determine the concentration of energy-related hormones in cow’s milk and to consider them from a public health perspective. Fourteen Holstein cows were subjected to milk and blood sampling on the following days in lactation (DIL): 10, 30, 60, 90, 150, 180, 210, 250 and 280 to determine milk hormones, fat and protein content and blood biochemical parameters. For the same purpose, bulk-tank milk was sampled and samples of retail milk with 1.5% (CM1.5) and 3.2% (CM3.2) fat was purchased. Milk insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) values were significantly lower at 90, 150, 180, 210 and 250 and significantly higher at 10, 30 and 60 DIL than lactation average (LA). Milk insulin concentrations were significantly lower at 30, 60 and 90 and higher at 210, 250 and 280 DIL than LA. Free thyroxine (fT4) level in the milk was higher at 250 DIL, while milk free triiodothyronine (fT3) concentrations were lower at 30, 60, 90 and 280 DIL, and significantly higher at 10 and 180 DIL than respective LA. Milk cortisol levels were lower at 60 and 280 DIL than LA. All measured milk hormones were significantly lower in CM1.5 compared to CM3.2, bulk-tank milk and LA. An exception was the LA of IGF-1, which was significantly lower than the IGF- 1 content in CM1.5. Blood biochemical parameters fluctuated evenly during lactation and were within the reference range. Hormone concentrations in cow’s milk fluctuate during lactation, giving milk an important role in the context of public health

Poultry salmonellosеs are group of diseases caused by Gram-negative bacteria from the Enterobacteriaceae and species Salmonella enterica. Of about 2500 serotypes of this species, about 10% are isolated from poultry. Special significance of salmonella comes from their character, as some serotypes can endanger human health leading to gastrointestinal toxin infections due to the consumption of poultry products. Vertical transmission is described by transovarian route to offspring, but also horizontal transmission, the most often by faecal secretion. The greatest risk for human well-being is the finding of Salmonella in poultry meat, in the eggs and on the eggshells. Some poultry can be infected with Salmonella without showing any clinical signs of the disease, but nevertheless being a significant source of infection, while clinical symptoms range from digestive problems (white diarrhoea, malabsorption), to bacteraemia and death. The aim of this paper is to retrospective presence of bacteria Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica in poultry in the Belgrade epizootiological area. Observation included samples of: embryonic eggs, day-old chicken cadavers, broiler and laying hens faeces samples investigated in six-year period. Salmonellae were isolated by standard microbiological methods followed by serological typing. In the examined number of positive samples of poultry salmonella ranged from 879 recorded in 2017 to 65 in 2018, while significantly lower findings were recorded in 2016 and 2021 with 7 positive samples, while 4 were recorded in 2022, and during 2023, 2 positive samples. The serotypes isolated in the mentioned period are S. Enteritidis, S. Infantis, S. Mbandaka, S. Senftenberg, S. Typhimurium, S. Agona, S. Taksony and S. Shiongwe. The most positive samples were found in the feces of laying hens, followed by the feces of broilers, carcasses of one-day-old chickens and embryonated eggs. Complete eradication of Salmonella from production is a difficult goal because of the presence of a large number of Salmonella serotypes and various sources of infection, but a proper control strategy must therefore be executed to prevent the risk of contamination. Prevention is the best tool for controlling Salmonella: hygiene, biosecurity and vaccination. It is a great responsibility of the breeders to apply the existing standards and to improve the new ones.Zbornik kratkih sadržaj

The development of antiaging drugs in dogs as a basis for research of aging and age-related diseases in humans

    No full text
From the dawn of civilization, humanity has dreamed of immortality. That's why the idea of extending life by giving a "pill" that will affect the aging process and diseases related to aging is certainly tempting. The discovery that rapamycin, a secondary metabolite of the bacterium Streptomyces hygroscopicus, isolated from soil taken on Easter Island, extends the lifespan of mice has opened up opportunities for its research as a potential longevity drug in other species. Over the past 15 years, there has been an explosion in the number of reports studying the effect of rapamycin on various diseases, physiological functions, and biochemical processes. These studies result in a huge change in the way the aging process is viewed today. It has become clear that life span in mammals can be significantly extended by a pharmacological substance when administered later in life. Because of close parallels with human aging, the pet dog is thought to be probably the most powerful model for studying the biology of aging. Unlike laboratory rodents, dogs are exposed to the same living conditions as humans, and develop many of the same age-related diseases (as humans). Rapamcin as an inhibitor of mTOR, the main regulator of the aging process, is currently the subject of interest in the development of drugs, that is, therapies aimed at slowing down aging in dogs. Given the advantages of further evaluation of the potential benefits of using the rapamycin and other therapeutically similar agents in canine geroscience, our aim is to review the researches to date with this potentially most potent antiaging drug discovered till now and to give an overview of current research with drugs under development for this purpose in dogs, who may form the basis of future researches of lifespan extension in humans.Book of abstract

Uloga biosigurnosnih mera i dobrobiti životinja u smanjenju primene antibiotika kod farmskih životinja

    No full text
Zbornik radova i kratkih sadržaj
