    Past triumphs, present struggles, and future conservation challenges of the autochthonous sheep breeds

    In past decades, due to industry and market preferences, local sheep breeds have been exposed to genetic erosion and extinction risk. According to the FAOs database, 26 sheep breeds are documented in Serbia. More than half of these are autochthonous breeds/types (Sjenica, Svrljig, Pirot, Pirot Improved, Lipe, Vlashko-Vitoroga, Bardoka, Baura, Tsigai, Chokan Tsigai, Sharmountain, Karakachan, Krivovir, Vlasic), which have an aptitude for wool, meat, and milk production, as well as considerable historical and cultural heritage value. The analysis of the FAO statistical database and the National sheep yearbooks over a 20-year period reveals fluctuations in the population size of each native sheep breed/type. The risk level varies; some types are at high risk of extinction, while others are not at risk. Longterm supportive measures are deemed essential not only for economic reasons but primarily to ensure the survival of these breeds, reflecting their cultural, historical, and heritage value.Book of abstrac

    Effects of different preparations containing selenium on selenium status and reproductive performance of common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) broodstock

    This study evaluated the efficiency of different Selenium supplements on blood Se status and reproductive performance of carp broodstock. Female carp (n=120) were distributed in 4 groups supplemented with Se as follows: control (non-supplemented), sodium selenite 200 µg/kg feed, sodium selenite i/m injection (160 µgSe/kg body weight), and selenized yeast 200 µg/kg feed. Blood was sampled on days 1, 20, and 30. On day 30, samples of roe were taken from females, and samples of blood and milt from 10 unsupplemented males. Larvae samples were taken after hatching. Plasmatic Se concentration was 51.38±3.77 µg/kg (day 1) and did not vary significantly. The erythrocyte Se concentration increased from 14.04±3.05 µg/kg (day 1), reaching 90.58±12.43 (day 20), to 212.38±57.87 µg/kg (day 30). Plasmatic glutathione peroxidase activity in supplemented groups increased from 4.41±1.15 to 7.73±2.26 μkat/l and plateaued until day 30. A similar pattern was observed for erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase activity, ranging from 54.51±15.45 μkat/l (day 1) to 80.72± 6.82 μkat/l (day 30). Se concentration and selenoenzyme activities in males did not differ from the female control group. Roe Se content ranged from 48.26±17.53 μg/l in control to 65.68±34.39 μg/l in fish supplemented selenized yeast, and in the pooled larvae samples, ranged from 26-43 μg/l. The Se concentration in the milt was 24.78±4.27 μg/l. Results suggest that 250 µgSe/kg feed was sufficient to meet the requirements of mature carp, sodium selenite being more efficient in elevating blood Se concentrations and selenoenzymes activities, while selenized yeast being more efficient in roe and larvae

    Fibrinous pericarditis in slaughtered pigs: impact on welfare, growth performance and carcass and meat quality

    This study aimed to determine the effects of fibrinous pericarditis on blood welfare indicators, performance indices and carcass and meat quality of slaughtered pigs. From a total of 144 examined pig hearts, the presence of fibrinous pericarditis was recorded in 25.69% cases. The presence of fibrinous pericarditis in slaughtered pigs was significantly associated with decreased (P<0.0001) blood lactate and glucose levels. The presence of fibrinous pericarditis in slaughtered pigs was significantly associated with reduced average lifetime daily weight gain (P=0.0042), live weight (P=0.0045), hot carcass weight (P=0.0045), cold carcass weight (P=0.0045) and lean meat content (P<0.0001). Consequently, pigs showing fibrinous pericarditis produced the lower (P<0.0001) percentage of „E“ class carcasses, but the higher (P=0.0079) percentage of „R“ class carcasses. Pigs without fibrinous pericarditis produced the better meat quality, with the higher (P=0.0465) percentage of red, firm and nonexudative meat. In contrast, the presence of fibrinous pericarditis in slaughtered pigs was significantly associated with abnormally elevated final meat pH (P<0.0001), high water-holding capacity (lower drip loss; P<0.0001) and unfavourable dark colour (higher lightness and yellowness; P<0.0001). As a result, pigs showing fibrinous pericarditis produced the highest percentage of dark, firm and dry meat (P=0.0002). In conclusion, assessing fibrinous pericarditis at the slaughterline has the potential to serve not only as an indirect indicator of pig health and welfare on the farm of origin but also of growth performance, carcass and pork quality

    The influence of environmental factors on the constitution of donkeys

    The donkey, as one of the oldest domestic animals, is spread over all continents. There were no organized selection measures for centuries. The basic condition was that the donkey could walk for a long time and carry a load. Such requirements, as well as the ecological conditions in which they developed and live, caused donkeys, regardless of where they live, to have practically the same body constitution, which is reflected in the bony index. Regardless of the height of the withers, that is, the size of the body, the relative relationships of individual parts of the body are quite similar.     Biosigurnost, dobrobit, dobra proizvođačka praksa i analiza rizika veoma su značajni elementi za intenzivnu proizvodnju na farmama visoko mlečnih krava i svinja. Planska primena biosigurnosnih mera presudna je u zaštiti zdravlja goveda i svinja i uspehu same proizvodnje. Preporuka je da se stalno izgrađuje svest zaposlenih o unapređenju biosigurnosti, da postoji aktivan odnos prema postojećim rizicima i da preduzete mere predstavljaju ključ uspeha u osmišljavanju i pripremi planova biosigurnosti za svaku konkretnu situaciju, odnosno farmu. Opšte je poznato da previdi, propusti i greške u održavanju potrebnog nivoa biosigurnosti obično dovode do nastanka oboljenja, pada obima proizvodnje, uginuća i gubitka zarade. Zato se na zdravstvenu zaštitu goveda i svinja primenom značajno više preventivnih mera može ispuniti koncept u kome će se realizovati rentabilna proizvodnja na farmama. Potrebno je da se istakne da je primena biosigurnosnih mera na farmama goveda i svinja danas najvažnija mera za sprečavanje potencijalnog unošenja i širenja patogenih uzročnika. Stoga mere biosigurnosti moraju biti dobro definisane, praktične, funkcionalne i razumljive farmerima odnosno odgajivačima goveda i svinja.     Culicoides as vectors of orbiviruses, causative agents of particularly dangerous infectious diseases of importance for veterinary medicine

    In the past, the worldwide distribution of bluetongue virus was limited to areas between approximately 35 degrees south and 40 degrees north latitude, but recently it has dramatically expanded in Europe to 58 degrees north latitude. The virus is thought to have been introduced into central and western Europe by the transport of infected animals or by wind-borne transmission of infected Culicoides, as well as by unknown routes of spread. Nowadays, European countries are experiencing regular outbreaks of bluetongue caused by different serotypes. Climate change is expected to affect the distribution and range of many vector species due to global warming and altered precipitation patterns. Climate change modifies long-term weather and climate patterns that affect the behavior of arthropod vectors. Increased average winter air temperatures allow arthropods to survive and extend their active period. An example of this is the emergence of bluetongue virus serotype 3 in the summer of 2023 in the Netherlands, the spread of the virus and its re-emergence in 2024. In the last 25 years, there has also been an increase in the number of horse sickness serotypes circulating at the northern border of the virus in sub-Saharan Africa. The current situation of equine sickness resembles the distribution of bluetongue virus before the sudden expansion into northern Europe in 2006. The wind-borne transmission of infected Culicoides is particularly important from a control perspective, as it makes the restriction of movement of susceptible animals significantly less effective in preventing the spread of the disease. Currently, the most important role of Culicoides from a public health perspective is their ability as biological vectors to transmit Oropouche virus, the causative agent of Oropouche fever in humans.Related to an Serbian-language version of the following article:[https://vet-erinar.vet.bg.ac.rs/handle/123456789/4702
