Aujeszky's disease in hunting dog in the territory of the Republic of Srpska

    No full text
Aujeszky's disease (pseudorabies) is an acute, contagious, viral disease, primarily of pigs, and then of other species of domestic and wild animals, caused by porcine herpesvirus type 1. In pigs, the infection is enzootic, with a high mortality rate upon the first entry of the virus into the group and is characterized by encephalitis and a high mortality rate in piglets, pneumonia in older pigs, and abortions in sows. The disease occurs sporadically in secondary hosts and is accompanied by a short incubation period and a fatal outcome. Carnivores become infected through direct or indirect contact with pigs and ingestion of raw or undercooked meat and internal organs, and is characterized by neurological disorders in the form of pruritus to self-mutilation. The paper describes a case of Aujeszky's disease in the territory of the city of Teslić in 2024, in a hunting dog of the Plot breed, which came into direct physical contact with a wild boar during hunting, as well as the carcass of a shot animal. Initial signs of the disease appeared after 24 hours in the form of inappetence, fever and vomiting. After the initial signs, neurological disorders manifested in the form of tilting the head to the side, hypersalivation and pruritus, which progressed to self-mutilation in the head area. Death occurred 36 hours after the onset of neurological disorders. Macroscopic examination revealed lesions on the skin of the head and neck, conjunctival hyperemia, generalized lymphadenopathy, hyperemia of the lungs, meninges and brain. Gastric dilatation with right-sided splenic torsion was also found, most likely as a result of acute shock and pain. Histopathological analysis revealed non-suppurative meningoencephalitis, characterized by discrete perivascular mononuclear infiltrates and perivascular hemorrhages in the cerebrum, gliosis, satellitosis, and neuronophagia in the medulla oblongata, as well as intranuclear eosinophilic inclusions in medulla oblongata neurons. The results of molecular analysis of brain tissue and tissue from skin lesions, using the qPCR method, demonstrated the presence of porcine herpesvirus type 1 nucleic acid in the examined samples. Sporadic infection of hunting dogs may indicate virus circulation in the wild boar population in the Republic of Srpska.Related to an Serbian-language version of the following article:[https://vet-erinar.vet.bg.ac.rs/handle/123456789/4708

Related to an English-language version of the following article:[https://vet-erinar.vet.bg.ac.rs/handle/123456789/4703

Effect of the dietary supplementation with sodium butyrate on gut morphology and caecal microbiota of broiler chickens

    No full text
A total of 900 chicks (Ross 308) were housed in 36 pens (25 animals/pen) according to a 3 × 2 × 2 factorial design encompassing three dietary supplementation rates of microencapsulated sodium butyrate (0 mg/kg, 150 mg/kg, and 300 mg/kg), two levels of ether extract (grower diet 6.7% vs. 7.7%; finisher diet 7.7% vs. 8.9%), and two sexes (males vs. females). The grower and finisher diets were based on maize (56-62%), soybean meal (25-31%), and full fat soybean (5.5-9.0%), besides animal fat (2.5-5.0%). Health and growth performance were monitored from hatching until commercial slaughtering at 42 d of age. At 39 d of age, 36 chickens (1 per pen, 6 per experimental diet) were slaughtered and jejunum tissue and caecal content sampled. The jejunum was stained with hematoxylin/eosin for morphometric evaluation. The intestinal microbiota was evaluated by sequencing of V2, V4, V8 and V3, V6-V7, V9 regions of the rRNA 16S gene. The dietary supplementation with sodium butyrate did not affect growth performance: final live weight averaged 2,733 g, with an average feed intake of 182 g/d and a feed conversion ratio of 1.53. Similarly, nor the dietary supplementation with sodium butyrate nor the fat level affected gut morphology or microbiota composition at 39 d of age. As for sex, performance was higher in males compared to females. The latter also showed greater ratio villi/crypt compared to males (4.63 vs. 4.12; P=0.02) without differences in villi length or crypt depth. Both alpha and beta diversity significantly changed between the bacterial community of females and males. Regardless from the dietary treatment and sex, at a phylum level, Firmicutes was the most represented and Bacteroidetes was the least; at a genus level, Faecalibacterium dominated, followed by an Uncultured genus of the Lachnospiraceae family, Parabacteroides, Lactobacillus, and Bacteroides. In conclusion, under the good health conditions of the present trial (mortality <1%), the different dietary treatments, with regard to sodium butyrate supplementation and fat content, did not affect gut health and microbiota of broiler chickens.Book of abstract

Nepravilno trošenje zuba kod konja: etiologija, dijagnostika i terapija

    No full text

Presence of Mycoplasma bovis in bulk tank milk and associated risk factor analysis in Serbian dairy farms

    Get PDF
Mycoplasma bovis (M. bovis) is a significant pathogen responsible for highly transmissible mastitis in cattle globally. It primarily spreads through colostrum, milk, and semen. Cows with persistent infections act as carriers, intermittently releasing the pathogen, making their milk a pivotal factor in infection transmission. Given the limited seroprevalence surveys in Serbia, this study aimed to detect M. bovis presence in bulk tank milk (BTM), determine route shedding, and evaluate infection risks. BTM samples were collected from 115 dairy farms across Serbia, with M. bovis DNA detected in 11 out of the 115 samples by real-time PCR. Additionally, M. bovis was detected in 1.30% of nasal swabs sampled from apparently healthy animals. A univariate analysis of the risk factors associated with M. bovis presence in the BTM samples revealed correlations with factors such as the breed, farm seropositivity, pre-milking and post-milking disinfection practices, farm type, cow population, milk yield, number of cows in the BTM samples, and parity. Seropositive farms exhibited the highest likelihood of M. bovis presence in milk. Moreover, pre- and post-milking disinfection practices and highly productive cows yielding over 8000 L of milk were identified as risk factors for PCR-positive BTM. In a multivariable mixed regression analysis, a risk factor for the presence of M. bovis infection in the BTM sample was the Holstein breed. These findings underscore a relatively high prevalence of M. bovis in BTM within Serbian dairy farms, suggesting a potential risk for M. bovis spreading through milk and oral route of calves’ infection

This study is the first report on the finding and determination of the presence of the Capillaria plica species in hunting dogs from five different regions in Serbia (Zapadno Backi, Juzno Backi, Kolubarski, Branicevski and Toplicki regions). This study was carried out on a significant number of hunting dogs to gather valuable epizootiological data on the prevalence of urinary capillariosis. It also assessed the risk variables that affect the occurrence, persistence and transmission of these helminthoses in hunting dogs. An examination of the urine sediment of hunting dogs in the period from 2020 to 2023, showed that the total prevalence of C. plica was 20.45%, with the highest number of diagnosed cases in the area of Kolubarski and Toplicki regions. Urinary capillariosis was predominantly found in dogs that were hunting 2 months ago (66.66%), it showed seasonality in occurrence with 38.88% of cases at the end of winter/beginning of spring and in autumn, and in terms of racial predisposition, it was the most prevalent in German short-haired birders (22.22%). A highly significant difference (p<0.001) in the prevalence of C. plica was found between dogs of different ages, with the highest prevalence in dogs aged 2-8 years (13.64%); in terms of diet, in dogs fed with a combined diet (13.64%); in dogs that went hunting 2 months ago (13.64%); and individuals whose urine was sampled by cystocentesis (17.05%). Between dogs with urinary symptoms and asymptomatic dogs, a significant difference (p<0.05) in the prevalence of this nematode was found in dogs with a manifested clinical picture (14.77%). Infections of domestic carnivores with this ubiquitous parasite of the urinary tract lead clinicians into certain delusions during diagnosis, because they are mostly asymptomatic. The high prevalence of urinary capillariosis diagnosed in foxes in Europe and the colonization of urban areas by foxes may increase the risk of infection of domestic dogs and cats with this nematode, especially in hunting dogs during hunting. The most reliable prevention involves regular parasitological examinations of urine and planned deworming of these animals 2-4 times a year, and as well as checking the effectiveness of the performed treatments.Zbornik kratkih sadržaj

    No full text
Cardiopulmonary dirofilariasis is a vector-borne disease of canids, felids and other mammals, caused by Dirofilaria immitis. In endemic areas with high prevalence of this nematode, numerous human infections accompanied by serious lung damage are registered. Since wild carnivores are reservoirs, transporters and potential sources of infection for domestic dogs, the aim of the research is to determine the prevalence and distribution of D. immitis infection in wild carnivores in the territory of the Republic of Srpska. During 2022, 2023 and the beginning of 2024, regular passive control of wild carnivores for rabies and active control of the success of vaccination of foxes against rabies were carried out. At that time, the carcasses of legally shot carnivores from all over the Republic of Srpska were delivered to the Veterinary Institute in Banja Luka, on which a targeted parasitological section was performed. The right heart and pulmonary arteries were examined for the presence of adult D. immitis, and blood was sampled from the heart and large blood vessels for serological and molecular diagnostics. During 2022, D. immitis was not diagnosed in 148 autopsied foxes and two martens. During 2023, 202 foxes, 22 jackals and seven martens were examined, and D. immitis adults were found in 1.73% of cases (four jackals from the municipality of Brod). During January and February 2024, 117 foxes, 32 jackals and two martens were examined, and positive findings were found in 6.62% of cases (three jackals from the municipality of Brod, five jackals and two foxes from the municipality of Derventa). The obtained results provide a preliminary insight into the geographical distribution and prevalence of D. immitis in wild carnivores in the Republic of Srpska. Knowledge of the epidemiology of D. immitis in wild carnivore populations may help clarify the risks of potential infection of domestic dogs and humans with this nematode. During the autopsy, blood for further tests was sampled selectively, so that an even representation of wild carnivores from all geographical areas of the Republic of Srpska was achieved. The results of serological and molecular analyzes will be announced later and will complete the epizootiological picture of the prevalence of D. immitis in wild carnivores in the Republic of Srpska.Zbornik kratkih sadržaj

Methicillin-resistant staphylococci (MRS) limit therapeutic options and pose a significant challenge in the treatment of bacterial infections in companion animals. Moreover, these strains pose a significant threat to global public health. This study aimed to investigate the molecular prevalence of coagulase-positive staphylococci (CoPS) causing skin and ear infections in dogs and to identify methicillin-resistant CoPS. A total of 79 staphylococcal strains were isolated from clinical samples collected from dogs with suspected skin and ear infections from the Dermatology clinic at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. Multiplex PCR was employed for species-specific identification of CoPS based on the sequence diversity of the nuc gene. Phenotypic characterization of methicilin resistance was performed using disc-diffusion and determination of minimally inhibitory concentrations values, while PBP2a (penicillin-binding protein 2a) was detected using latex agglutination and finally molecular detection of mecA and mecC genes was performed. Among the 76 CoPS isolates, 50/76 (65.8%) were identified as S. pseudintermedius, 17/76 (22.4%) as S. aureus, 6/76 (7.9%) as S. coagulans, and 3/76 (3.9%) as S. intermedius. The mecA gene was detected in 30% (15/50) of S. pseudintermedius isolates and 29.4% (5/17) of S. aureus isolates, classified as methicillin-resistant S. pseudintermedius (MRSP) and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA), respectively. No isolates tested positive for the mecC gene. These findings underscore the high prevalence of MRS in canine dermatological infections, highlighting the importance of continuous monitoring as the first step in combating the high prevalence of MRS and robust infection control measures to mitigate the spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Such efforts are crucial in addressing the public health implications associated with AMR and ensuring effective treatment strategies for both humans and animals considering that besides MRSA, newer studies recognize S. pseudintermedius and MRSP strains as opportunistic human pathogens and emerging zoonotic agents.Zbornik kratkih sadržaj

Insects as alternative source of animal proteins in human diet: safety concerns

    No full text
With the world’s population constantly increasing, edible insects emerge as a very promising, sustainable and alternative food source. Nevertheless, there are a number of potential safety concerns for consumers associated with edible insects and their products, including allergic reactions, pathogenic microorganisms, parasites, pesticide residues and heavy metals. Allergic reactions are the most important safety concern for insect consumers. Most allergens from edible insects are proteins such as hyaluronidase, microtubulin, phospholipase A, arginine kinase and proto-myosin. However, the allergens in edible insects can be mitigated via various methods (heat treatment, fermentation, hydrolysis) to reduce their allergenicity. While many microorganisms specific to edible insects may not pose direct safety concerns for humans, they can still transmit diseases that are potentially harmful. Edible insects harbor numerous pathogenic bacteria that can impact human health, whereby the most important are Staphylococcus aureus, Clostridium, Bacillus cereus, Vibrio and Streptococcus. Additionally, viruses present a notable safety concern for consumers, with over 70 viruses have been detected in edible insects, 36 of which can cause infections in humans. Furthermore, certain parasites found in edible insects, such as Dicrocoelium dendriticum, Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia lamblia and Toxoplasma spp., can also pose risks to human health upon consumption. Pesticide residues and heavy metals pose safety concern for wild- caught insects. Most commonly found heavy metals in edible insects are cadmium, mercury, arsenic and lead. Other significant chemical hazards in edible insects include dioxins, residues of veterinary drugs, polychlorinated biphenyls, mycotoxins, plant toxins and polyaromatic hydrocarbons, all of which can pose important safety risks. In conclusion, the primary safety concerns associated with both farmed and wild-caught insects are allergic reactions and pathogenic microorganisms. However, pesticide residues and heavy metals represent particularly significant safety issues in wild-caught insects. Therefore, from the food safety perspective, it is strongly recommended that only edible insects sourced from controlled farm conditions should be consumed.Zbornik kratkih sadržaj
