Diventare sedentari.
The film "Becoming Sedentary. When the hamlet of Eynan-Mallaha bears witness to the changing world", directed by Fanny Bocquentin (CNRS, UMR TEMPS) and Paul Rambaud (MSH Mondes), illustrated by Pascaline Gaussein, presents the history of the sedentarisation of the very last hunter-gatherers of prehistoric times in the Near East. The Eynan-Mallaha site, located in the Jordan Valley, serves as the backdrop for 70 years of archaeological exploration. Archival documents, artist illustrations and recent videos are combined to bring to life a narrative that links this shift in lifestyle 15,000 years ago with our current concerns. This film was produced with the support of MSH Mondes, UMR Technologie et Ethnologie des Mondes Préhistoriques, the Institut Français and CNRS ImagesLe film "Devenir sédentaire. Conformism and Name Dynamics: A Cliometric Study of Ancient Greek Names
International audienceExtending the sociological study of conformism in naming, we develop a dynamic model of name choice, reflecting conformist or non-conformist behavior. This allows us to account for more degrees of freedom than the statistical physics approaches that have generally been used in name modeling. Testing our model empirically, we find that conformist naming accounts for the unique shape of name distributions in Ancient Greece, which differs from contemporary name data
L’action en mouvement : morale et approche dynamique
International audienceWe consider mobility not only at the level of action, of decision, but also especially at the level of evaluation. The problem concerns the assessment of this mobility of evaluation. Should we consider it a good or bath thing, and in what sense, that an agent changes (or not) his or her mind?
National audienceThis chapter discusses the creation and activities of the French Association of Friends of the Orient, the first French scientific and cultural institution dedicated to promoting knowledge of Asia to the general public during the 1920s and 1930s.Ce chapitre revient sur la création et les activités de l'Association Française des Amis de l'Orient, la première institution scientifique et culturelle française attachée à la diffusion des connaissances de l’Asie auprès du grand public, durant les années 1920 - 1930
Dynamic (Mis)allocation of Investments in Solar Energy
International audienceBecause they differ in terms of technology, size, and location, solar photovoltaic installations exhibit very heterogeneous levelized costs of producing electricity. Therefore, the present value cost of meeting a given trajectory of annual solar energy production depends on which projects are commissioned when: the observed sequence of investment decisions need not be cost-efficient. We propose a methodology to assess the magnitude of dynamic misallocation by comparing the present value cost of realized investments to a counterfactual optimal sequence of investments. Applying our methodology to France between 2005 and 2021, we find that the observed trajectory of annual solar output could have been produced at a present value cost about 30% lower than its realized value. Our optimized counterfactual suggests that investments in residential solar should have on average been postponed by seven years, while investments in medium- and large-scale installations should have occurred three to four years earlier
Trust Paradoxes in Machine Learning: An Ontological Approach
International audienceDespite significant advancements in the performance and capabilities of data-driven machine learning systems, establishing trust remains a profound challenge. Complex trust paradoxes, such as balancing transparency with performance, and personalization with privacy, complicate the establishment of trust. This paper builds on the main foundations of trust in technology from the literature, focusing on the interplay between trust components and the tensions among competing favorable features and ethical principles. We then introduce a new trust ontology that captures the key elements of trust and their relationships. This ontology highlights the dynamics of trust, emphasizing the conflicting relationships between favorable features and how they influence trust between humans and machine learning systems

Food and UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage Journey
International audienceSince the first inscriptions of food-related elements in UNESCO’s List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) of Humanity in 2010, the concept of food-as-heritage has grown and evolved, much like the field of food studies, to encompass an ever-expanding array of foodways, culinary products, and practices across the globe. Tracing its roots back to the 1989 “Recommendation in the Safeguarding of Traditional Culture and Folklore” and passing through the 2003 UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the ICH, one can trace a shift from valorizing and giving visibility to cultural elements, with an eye on the Global South (departing from the dominant Western concept of built heritage, focused on churches or monuments), to an intention to preserve cultural practices through education and generational transmission. Food, however, according to skeptics from within heritage governance, was never intended to enter into this realm of internationally protected cultural recognition. Critics worried about the inherent commercial component of foodways, the essentialization of practices, the impacts of tourism, and imbalances of power related to both representation and access to economic benefits following inscription. Early 21st-century social, digital, economic, and ecological realities have greatly transformed from the moment of these first food-centered inscriptions, which listed the Gastronomic Meal of the French, the Mediterranean Diet, and Traditional Mexican Cuisine. As such, these three cases will serve as reference points for this article, providing context for both the emergence of food-as-heritage and understanding its ongoing iterations. The state of UNESCO-inscribed ICH foodways in the early 21st century raises questions linking back to these initial concerns. This article traces the emergence of food into UNESCO’s ICH program and outlines key considerations and debates surrounding foodways and processes of heritagization. From discussing the concept of “universal values,” to questioning top-down initiatives and power structures, to exploring nation-branding, commodification, and links with culinary nationalism, this article presents the complexities of safeguarding food and striking a balance between tradition and innovation. These discussion points return to central questions relevant to the broader heritage field: by whom, for whom, and for what purposes is inscription sought

Public issues in the first French museums,18th-19th centuries, through institutional testimonies
International audienceThe question of the public is a major issue in the world of museums today, on differentscales and according to different rationales. Over and above the question of visitor flowsand their consequences, over the two and a half centuries of the modern democraticmuseum’s existence, we have seen a succession of claims and accusations about itspublic success or failure. During the eighteenth century, the museum was a popular part of philosophical literature, which imagined various devices to serve the progress of civilisation. Until 1830,the dream of a Museum as a place of worship for humanity haunted certain imaginations, marked by the ancient myth of the Museum of Alexandria
