Reassessing Craft in the Late Acheulean: Technological Insights from Jaljulia Handaxes (Levant)
International audienceRecent research on the Lower Paleolithic of the Levant has re-evaluated technical trends defined for the Acheulean techno-complex during the 1970s, trends built upon typological analysis of handaxe assemblages. To this end, new methods are being applied to old and new collections in order to assess handaxe morphological and technological variation over time, opening a discussion about the technical skills of Acheulean knappers, also referred to as “craftmanship” (hereafter referred to as “craft”). In this context, morphometric studies conducted at the Late Acheulean site of Jaljulia have highlighted the crudeness and high morphological variability of the bifacial assemblage, challenging the 1970s idea of handaxe increasing refinement over time. Interestingly, the authors do not attribute this variability to a lack of knapping skill—as irregular and non-standardized productions are traditionally interpreted—but to an expedient chaîne opératoire of tool production. Produced predominantly in brecciated flint, collected and modified on the spot, the sample studied is interpreted by the authors as tools mostly adapted for bone-crushing purposes. This paper aims to offer a new perspective on this assemblage by conducting a critical technological analysis of the handaxes from the oldest locality on-site, Area D, taking into account raw material constraints as well as the site’s function as a handaxe production workshop, among other activities conducted at this Paleolithic landscape. Our results suggest the presence of pieces discarded during the production process, which contributes to the increased morphological variability observed in the assemblage. Our analysis discusses the expedient character of Jaljulia’s handaxe reduction sequence and points to the production of three distinct techno-types, potentially associated to a wider variety of tasks. To conclude, we discuss our results in the context of the Late Acheulean of the Levant, within the broader framework of technological trends and associated technical skills in the late Acheulean

International audienceThe collaboration between the Cuban Centre of Molecular Immunology (CIM) and the Indian firm Biocon challenges conventional understandings of technology transfer. Initiated in 2003, the joint venture was a unique experiment in South-South biopharmaceutical collaboration. It brought into relation two distinct innovation regimes: Cuba's public health-oriented model, closely tied to the state and its medical diplomacy, and India's market-driven biopharmaceutical industry. However, both regimes were animated by postcolonial aspirations for technoscientific emergence in the Global South. The partnership ultimately dissolved, as structural tensions and divergent industrial objectives proved difficult to reconcile. But its apparent failure was also productive. For CIM, it opened access to resources lacking in Cuba and enabled clinical trials on a wider population. For Biocon, it offered research, development, and manufacturing expertise that supported its rise in the global biosimilar market. Drawing on interviews with key actors in Cuba and India, this study situates the partnership within broader debates on innovation regimes, postcolonial science, and the inequalities that shape the global biopharmaceutical economy. The article shows how South-South collaborations, even when framed as alternatives to asymmetric North-South models, remain entangled in (bio)capitalist logics while still opening possibilities for reimagining technological exchange beyond dominant North/South narratives.
Public Persuasion
This short paper studies the problem of public persuasion, that is, when a sender has to persuade multiple receivers, possibly having heterogenous beliefs, with the same information for all. We show that public persuasion constrains the sender in how he can influence the beliefs of receivers: if the sender wants to influence the beliefs of one particular receiver, he loses all controls over the beliefs of the others
The Caravan Roads and Way Stations in North-West Arabia (CaRoWS) Project. Report on the 2025 Season.
This is the report of the 2025 fieldwork season undertaken by the CaRoWS project in the Saudi Arabian Ḥismā. It contains several chapters : on the Greek, Early Islamic, Ancient North Arabian and Nabataean as well Developing Arabic inscriptions. They are preceded by an introduction and followed by a general commentary. It contains also appendices, among which maps, a list of sites and a catalogue of the new Nabataean and Nabataeo-Arabic inscriptions. 33 plates illustrate the report.
International audienceThe article deals with specific readings of Psalm 119 from XII and XIII columns of the Great Psalms Scroll 11Q5. The difference between the Qumran text on one side and the Masoretic Text and the other textual forms on the other can be explained in different ways: (1) as a problem in the transmission of the text (11Q5 XII 1), (2) as a modification for consistency in the Qumran Psalter (11Q5 XII 10, 11Q5 XIII 11), (3) as a linguistic feature (11Q5 XII 6), (4) or as a specific theological vision of the Qumran Psalm (11Q5 XIII 3). The present study represents an attempt to understand some readings proper to 11Q5 by comparison with the other textual witnesses and by the reconstruction of the textual context of the Psalm 119.L’article traite des variantes spécifiques du Psaume 119 tirées des colonnes XII et XIII du Grand Rouleau des Psaumes 11Q5.
