The impact of situational anxiety on social understanding

    No full text
Participants will watch a sequence of short videos of autobiographic narratives orated by actors which differ in emotional and factual content, when in both an ‘anxious’ and a ‘non-anxious’ condition. Participants’ empathy will be measured by self-reports of their mood in relation to the actors; participants’ theory of mind will be measured by the response time of judgements on the actors' narratives

Representative government in early modern Britain and Austria

    No full text
The article compares early modern British and Austrian representative institutions, exploring the history of both in order to explain how they came to function as crucial parts of the fiscal-military states of both countries. The article examines the history of the Austrian and Hungarian representative bodies in an attempt to understand how they came to play the same role in their state as the British Parliament did in its state. In the case of Austria, I will explore how the history of the estates contradicts the traditional interpretation of the establishment of a Habsburg “absolute” state

Inhibitory control training and unhealthy behaviours: a meta-analysis testing short and long- term effects in clinical and at-risk populations

    No full text
Background: Inhibitory control training (ICT) has been suggested as a possible method for reducing unhealthy behaviours such as overeating and excessive alcohol consumption, albeit evidence is available only for what concerns the short term. The aim of the present meta-analytic work was therefore to add new knowledge in this research field reaching the following objectives: (a) assess the long-term impact of ICT training; (b) include studies targeting cigarette smoking in the meta-analysis; (c) evaluating potential moderators of ICT effects. Methods: A meta-analysis was conducted on 17 articles, comprising 20 studies and 1935 individuals. Out of the 20 studies, 11 focused on eating behaviour, six on alcohol consumption, and three on cigarette smoking. Each study included pre- and post-measurements, and 11 studies also reported follow-up measurements. The studies utilised ICT paradigms such as Go-NoGo, Stop Signal, and Antisaccade tasks. The experimental condition involved an ICT paradigm with stimuli related to the specific problematic behaviour (behaviour-specific ICT). Most control conditions consisted of ICT with neutral stimuli (neutral ICT) and of computerised cognitive tasks involving behaviour-specific stimuli, while four studies used alternative control conditions such as a waiting list, treatment as usual, and the provision of a brochure. Results: The findings indicate that there were no significant differences between the experimental and control conditions after the training and during the follow-up. However, it was discovered that the duration of training only had an impact on the effectiveness of the experimental condition (behaviour-specific ICT), with longer training periods associated with a larger effect size, while no moderators emerged for what concerns the control conditions. Discussion and Conclusion: The results suggest that while ICT could lead to a significant reduction of unhealthy behaviour in both the short and long term and across different clinical conditions, its benefit is not significantly different when compared with other forms of cognitive intervention
