Childhood Predictors of Sense of Mastery: A Cross-National Analysis (in the Global Flourishing Study)

    No full text
Prior research documents strong associations between an increased sense of mastery with improved health and well-being outcomes. However, less is known about candidate childhood antecedents that lead to sense of mastery in adulthood. We will use data from a diverse, and international sample of 240,000 individuals across 22 countries, to evaluate 16 childhood candidate predictors of sense of mastery. We hypothesize that these childhood experiences, personal attributes, and familial or social circumstances will have meaningful and varied associations with adult sense of mastery. Additionally, we anticipate the strength of these associations will differ by country, reflecting diverse societal influences. Using multivariate regression analysis and E-values for robustness check against potential unmeasured confounding. Our study aims to provide comprehensive insights into early-life experiences that contribute to the development of a sense of mastery in adulthood. The findings will enhance our understanding of early-life predictors of adult outcomes and provide valuable evidence for informing policy and practice aimed at fostering a sense of mastery as people age

Demographic Variation in Daily Smoking Across 22 Countries: A Cross-National Analysis

    No full text
Limited research has been conducted to examine how (1) adult daily smoking varies across cultures and (2) demographic variation in daily smoking differs across those cultures. This study is an in-depth, cross-national exploration of adult daily cigarette smoking across cultures, and its variations across key demographic groups. Using a diverse and international dataset of approximately 200,000 individuals from 22 countries, we will examine relationships between the daily smoking rate and key demographics, including: age, gender, marital status, employment status, religious service attendance, education, and immigration status. Our descriptive results will also present the ordered means of the rate across countries. We will be mindful of potential interpretation challenges due to varying cultural contexts and response scales used. Our work will illuminate the distributions and descriptive statistics of the rate of adult daily cigarette smoking across these demographic features, offer insight into country-specific variations in daily cigarette smoking, and establish a valuable foundation for future investigations into sociocultural factors that might affect the health-risk behavior

Demographic Variation in Political Voice Across 22 Countries: A Cross-National Analysis

    No full text
Prior research documents how political voice predicts well-being. However, less is known about how political voice differs across cultures and across demographic groups within those different cultures. This study presents an in-depth, cross-national exploration of responses to the question statement “Do you have a say about what the government does? (Y/N/Unsure)?" across cultures, and its variations across key demographic groups. Using a diverse and international dataset of approximately 200,000 individuals from 22 countries, we will examine relationships between political voice and key demographics, including: age, gender, marital status, employment status, religious service attendance, education, and immigration status. Our descriptive results will also present the ordered proportion of endorsing “Yes” across countries. We will be mindful of potential interpretation challenges due to varying cultural contexts and language used. Our work will illuminate the distributions of endorsement across these demographic features, offer insight into country-specific variations in political voice, and lay a valuable foundation for future investigations into sociocultural influences that might shape political voice

Canine-Assisted Interventions Among Youth Involved with the Criminal Justice System

    No full text
The incorporation of dogs in correctional settings and forensic mental health hospitals for youth is a growing trend. This scoping review aims to map studies related to canine-assisted intervention designed for youth involved in the criminal justice system. The goal is to understand how these interventions are integrated into correctional settings or forensic mental health hospitals, shedding light on their characteristics and potential benefits for youth

Beyond Proximity: Constructing Organic Neighborhoods Using a Two-Stage Unsupervised Learning Approach

    No full text
Studying the relationship between neighborhoods and individual-level outcomes such as crime, labor market success, or intergenerational mobility has a long history in the social sciences. As local processes such as gentrification or residential mobility constantly change neighborhoods’ composition and spatial expansion, time-constant one-size-fits-all neighborhood measures fail to capture important local dynamics. This paper presents a flexible and data-driven approach for efficiently estimating overlapping and arbitrarily shaped neighborhoods with time-dynamic boundaries. Constructed in a two-stage clustering design, the first stage identifies homogeneous groups within a city (using an automated K-Means algorithm), while the second stage clusters homogeneous groups by spatial proximity (using the HDBSCAN algorithm). In an analysis of 86 million person-year observations from 76 German cities, the paper shows that a larger spatial expansion of neighborhoods with a high socioeconomic status negatively correlates with city crime cases, while higher neighborhood fragmentation and heterogeneity correlate positively with crime rates. The findings stress the importance of flexible neighborhood estimation techniques and the necessity to view neighborhoods as non-constant entities. By modeling contexts as such agentic players, the two-staged algorithm depicts a novel and transparent tool to consider the spatial embeddedness of individuals, firms, or regions in sociological research

This paper retrieves a coherent Sanskrit text from the fifteenth-century Tibetan anthology of quotations used by Vanaratna, the ‘Oral-Tradition Gems’ (Zhal lung rin po che'i phreng ba, Q5099, N3885). The quotations’ sources are traced and the process of their transmission, translation and arrangement in an anthology is exposed
