    Exploring the Unexplored: Worry as a Catalyst for Exploratory Behavior in Anxiety and Depression

    The relationship between anxious and depressive traits and exploration behavior has been examined in several studies with mixed results. While some studies suggest that anxious and depressive traits are related to avoidance and a decrease in exploratory behaviour, others find the opposite to be true. In our studies, we adopt a multi-armed bandit task in which arms that were spatially close to each other have similar rewards, allowing for generalisation from observed rewards. Furthermore, we introduced risks to simulate costs of over-exploration in the real world. In two studies, we investigate the relationship between transdiagnostic symptoms of anxiety and depression, specifically worrying, and task behaviour. While our first study uses a purely correlational design, our second study involves a psychotherapy-inspired intervention to reduce worries and investigate their causal effect on exploration behaviour. The results suggest that worrying may be a causal factor linking anxious and depressive traits to increased exploration behaviour. Specifically, using computational modelling, we show that worrying is related to an increased preference for novel options, as opposed to mere choice stochasticity. These findings enhance our understanding of the complex links between depression, anxiety and exploration behaviour, and highlight the importance of worry in driving increased exploration

    A network science approach to social cohesion in European societies

    As European societies are becoming increasingly unequal, diverse, and polarised, concerns about their cohesion are growing. In this light, it is surprising that social cohesion research has almost entirely ignored one of its core dimensions: relationships. Broad acquaintanceship networks, which connect each individual to hundreds of others through both intimate and superficial relationships, have long been assumed to bind societies together and provide a sense of community and solidarity. Nonetheless, in the past they were hardly studied empirically due to the technical complexity that the comprehensive study of society-wide networks involves. This project, financed by the European Research Council (ERC Advanced Grant, Grant Agreement No. 101020038) develops a ground-breaking, network-scientific approach to social cohesion. After designing a theoretical framework for the structural cohesion of societies, it develops a methodology to study structural cohesion empirically, hybridising two strands of network research in an unprecedented way. The methodology is implemented in a large-scale, cross-national survey administered to representative samples of the populations of four European countries. The survey estimates are used to simulate society-wide networks, to explore resulting macro-level structures. These macro-level structures are then used to specify agent-based models to study in more depth how broad acquaintanceship networks influence subjective manifestations of cohesion. Based on the project, we will know how cohesive broad acquaintanceship networks are across categorical fault lines of citizenship, social class, religion and political orientation for five societies, how real-life inter- and intragroup relationships cluster to form network constellations that expose individuals in unique ways to other social groups, and how these constellations shape subjective manifestations of cohesion such as tolerance, trust, and acceptance of diversity. The project is conducted by the COALESCE Lab at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, between 2021 and 2027

    Investigating the Role of Meta-Emotional Processes in Affective Distress

    People vary greatly in the way they experience and manage their emotions. As a result, they tend to develop different and distinct relationships with their own emotions throughout their lives, something the current proposal refers to as meta-emotional processes. Several of these processes are known to influence emotional functioning. For instance, emotional awareness, emotion regulation, and the beliefs people hold about emotions are all known to influence levels of affective distress. However, each of these constructs have been studied in relative isolation, despite the intuitive connection they all have with each other. Guided by the theory of constructed emotion (Barrett, 2017), the current study will use structural equation modeling to investigate how emotional awareness, emotion regulation, and emotion beliefs all influence affective distress in two models. Specifically, in one model, sequential mediation analyses are proposed where the association between emotional awareness and affective distress is mediated by emotion beliefs and emotion regulation in one model. In the second model, emotion regulation is expected to mediate the link between emotional awareness and affective distress, and then the link between emotion regulation and emotion beliefs are expected to be mediated by affective distress
