The increasing global burden of oxidative stress-related conditions, diabetes, and neurodegenerative disorders underscores the urgent need for multi-targeted, plant-based therapeutic agents. In this context, the present study aimed to evaluate the antidiabetic, antioxidant, and neuroprotective properties of various Satureja hortensis and Satureja montana extracts and essential oils. In vitro biological activities were assessed through α-glucosidase, acetylcholinesterase (AChE), and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) inhibition assays, along with DPPH• and ABTS• + radical scavenging assays. At a concentration of 100 µg/mL, S. hortensis root methanol extract (ShRME) and herb water extract (ShHWE) exhibited strong α-glucosidase inhibitory activity (69.88% and 71.23%, respectively). Conversely, S. montana herb water extract (SmHWE) and methanol extract (SmHME) showed the highest DPPH• radical scavenging activity (36.28% and 24.37%, respectively). S. montana essential oil (SmEO) demonstrated notable inhibition of AChE (32.58%) and BChE (41.62%) at 1000 µg/mL, while S. hortensis essential oil (ShEO) inhibited BChE by 44.39%. GC-MS analysis revealed that SmEO primarily contained carvacrol (43.72%), γ-terpinene (17.24%), and p-cymene (14.56%), while ShEO was rich in thymol (39.84%), γ-terpinene (20.16%), and p-cymene (13.72%). These phenolic monoterpenes are likely contributors to the observed antioxidant and cholinesterase inhibitory activities. Principal component analysis explained 74.8% of the total variance and clearly separated the samples based on their activity profiles. Extracts were closely associated with glucose-regulating effects, while essential oils clustered with enzyme-inhibiting neuroprotective activities. These findings highlight the multifunctional therapeutic potential of Satureja species and support their further investigation as candidates for the development of plant-derived agents against oxidative stress, diabetes, and neurodegenerative diseases. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved

    Get PDF
Insomnia, anxiety, and depression have become critical mental health issues exacerbated by the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, highlighting the importance of understanding their interrelationships. This article evaluates the study by Li et al, which investigates the links between insomnia, anxiety, and depression while examining the mediating role of cognitive failures and the moderating effect of neuroticism. The study employed a cross-sectional design with 1011 participants, using validated scales to measure insomnia severity, neuroticism, cognitive failures, and mental health indicators. Li et al found that approximately 40% of participants exhibited symptoms of anxiety, depression, and insomnia, with most cases being mild. The results demonstrated that cognitive failures play a mediating role in the relationship between insomnia and both anxiety and depression. Furthermore, neuroticism moderated the relationship between insomnia and cognitive failures, with a stronger effect observed in individuals with lower levels of neuroticism. These findings underscore the importance of considering personality traits and cognitive processes in understanding mental health outcomes. This study emphasizes the critical need for interventions aimed at reducing cognitive failures and enhancing emotional stability to mitigate the impact of insomnia on mental health. Strategies to improve sleep quality, boost cognitive resilience, and regulate emotional responses could significantly enhance individuals' mental well-being. Moreover, integrating personality assessments into mental health services could facilitate more effective and personalized interventions. This article provides an original perspective on the effects of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic on global mental health. The content of the article addresses the complex relationships between sleep disorders, cognitive function losses, and neuroticism in light of data compiled from existing literature and current research. In addition, how these relationships have deepened during the pandemic and the effectiveness of proposed treatment methods for these phenomena are discussed in comparison with previous studies. The arguments in the article offer new perspectives and suggestions aimed at filling gaps in the literature, and make an important contribution to both clinical practice and public health policies. Li et al's study provides a comprehensive framework for understanding the connections between insomnia, cognitive failures, and neuroticism, as well as their influence on anxiety and depression. The findings offer valuable implications for public health strategies, emphasizing the necessity of holistic approaches to address post-pandemic mental health challenges

    Get PDF
Background: Toxoplasma gondii infection can cause changes in neurotransmitter levels in the brain, which can affect an individual’s behavior. Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between latent toxoplasmosis and cigarette addiction and its effect on cortisol and melatonin levels, which are known to be associated with nicotine addiction. Methods: The patient group consisted of 90 smokers who applied to the Alcohol and Substance Addiction Treatment and Education Center Unit of the Health Sciences University Training and Research Hospital. Individuals with any substance addiction other than smoking were excluded from the study. The control group included 82 volunteers who had not used any substances in the last year. Toxoplasma gondii positivity, as well as cortisol and melatonin levels, were investigated via enzymelinked immunosorbent assay of the serum samples taken from the study participants. The Z test and Fisher's exact test were used to determine statistical significance at P < 0.05. The independent-samples Kruskal-Wallis t-test was used to determine the relationship between cortisol and melatonin levels and T. gondii positivity. Results: Toxoplasma gondii immunoglobulin G was detected in 52 (57.8%) of the smokers and 23 (28%) of those in the control group. A statistically significant relationship was found between T. gondii positivity and smoking (P = 0.001). In the statistical evaluation, no relationship was found between T. gondii positivity and cortisol and melatonin in smokers. Conclusions: There is an association between T. gondii infection and smoking addiction, but this association is independent of melatonin and cortisol levels. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved

Evaluation of Product Yield and Fatty Acid Composition of Three Flax (Linum usititassimum L.) Varieties Depending on Different Sowing Dates

    Get PDF
The flax (Linum usititassimum L.) plant can grow in various agroecological environments. However, there are some factors that affect the production and quality of flax. Sowing date is one of the important factors determining crop productivity. In this study, four different sowing dates (20-22 March, 1-3 April, 15-18 April and 30 April, respectively) were applied to determine the appropriate sowing date in terms of yield and oil quality in three flax varieties (Sar & imath; Dane, Kara K & imath;z, Beyaz Gelin). The study results showed that by delaying sowing, the seed filling period of the plant was exposed to high temperatures, and this caused decreases in seed yield. In other words, the most positive results in terms of agronomic characteristics were obtained from the first sowing date. In this respect, the highest oil yield of 760 kg ha-1 and the highest oil content of 34% were obtained from the Sar & imath; Dane variety. Similarly, flaxseed showed high values in terms of alphalinolenic acid (54.25%), palmitic acid (6.36%), stearic acid (7%), oleic acid (22.54%) and linoleic acid (14%) at the first and second planting times, while these rates decreased relatively as the planting time was delayed. According to the results of the two-year study, it was determined that the ecological conditions of the region were suitable for flax cultivation. However, it is clear that delaying the sowing date causes significant decreases in both the agronomic traits of flax and the oil quality for industrial purposes. In this respect, considering the ecology of the region, sowing flax in the last week of March or the first week of April is suitable for optimum yield and oil quality

    No full text
Cadmium (Cd) contamination in agricultural soils is a serious environmental issue that reduces crop yield and threatens food safety and human health. While conventional chelators enhance Cd uptake, they often impair plant health. This study investigates whether naphthalene-1-yl 2,4,6-trimethyl benzenesulfonate (NTB) acts as a dual-functional agent by enhancing Cd uptake and reducing toxicity in maize. Maize seedlings pretreated with 0.25 mM NTB and exposed to 100 mu M CdCl2 showed a 69% increase in Cd accumulation. NTB reduced oxidative stress, lowering TBARS and H2O2 levels by 37% and 34%, respectively. Proline accumulation rose by only 12%, and RWC increased by 9%, indicating improved stress tolerance. Antioxidant enzyme responses shifted: SOD activity declined by 71%, while CAT, APX, and GPX decreased by 24%, 19%, and 37%. NTB also elevated antioxidants, including gallic acid (61%), epicatechin (71%), vanillic acid (42%), and rosmarinic acid (64%). Total chlorophyll increased by 68%, and gas exchange parameters improved: Pn by 70%, Tr by 46%, gs by 14%, and Ci by 72%. Fluorescence parameters also improved, with Fv/Fm and Phi PSII increasing by 19% and 14%, and NPQ decreasing by 14%. These results show that NTB enhances Cd uptake while maintaining physiological balance, offering a promising phytoremediation strategy.Sakarya Maize Research Institute, TurkeyThanks to PhD Adem KORKMAZ, who synthesized the NTB, and Sakarya Maize Research Institute, Turkey that supplied the maize seeds, cultivar ADA-523

Is developmental imitation related to rational imitation in young children with ASD?

    No full text
This study used a correlational design to examine associations between instructed imitation, spontaneous imitation, and rational imitation in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) between 23–48 months of age (n = 40) and typically developing (TD) children between 12–24 months of age (n = 42). The study utilized seminal experiments, the head-touch paradigm, and the hidden box to measure rational imitation. Also, the study first utilized IMETCHASD as an alternative tool in the literature to measure instructed imitation and spontaneous imitation in an interactive play context. Results showed that spontaneous imitation was associated with rational imitation in ASD. These associations were observed after controlling for cognitive level. However, the study did not find significant correlations between instructed imitation and rational imitation in both groups. Implications for the relationship are discussed in terms of theoretical accounts for the occurrence of rational imitation and further research needs. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved
