Effects of COVID-19: Hopelessness and Death Anxiety in Patients Aged 65 and Over
It is thought that age is an important factor in hopelessness and death anxiety, particularly in older adults during an epidemic disease like COVID-19, where death rates are high. This study was conducted to examine hopelessness and death anxiety in patients aged 65 and over who were diagnosed with COVID-19. The study was conducted between March and April 2021 in a pandemic hospital specially designated to combat the COVID-19 outbreak, with 100 patients who agreed to participate in the study. Personal information form, Beck hopelessness scale and Death anxiety scale were used to collect data. The mean Beck Hopelessness score of the patients was 6.57 +/- 3.085 and the mean Death Anxiety Scale was 9.16 +/- 2.242. There was a statistically significant difference between the mean scores of Beck hopelessness and education level (p = 0.001) and between the mean scores of Beck hopelessness and age (p = 0.037) of patients diagnosed with COVID-19 who are aged 65 and over. In addition, a statistically significant difference was found between the ages of the patients and their mean scores on the death anxiety scale (p = 0.023), and between the mean scores of the death anxiety scale and the condition of having a chronic disease (p = 0.001). In the light of the obtained data, certain social services can be put into practice to reduce/prevent the affection of the epidemic on older adults people
An investigation of service life behavior of 3D-printed hybrid polymer bearing using fused deposition modeling (FDM) method
Polymer-bearing usage has been increasing recently, especially in sectors where hygiene is important. These bearings have advantages due to their resistance to corrosion, even with most chemicals. Besides, they do not require additional lubrication. Contrary to the expectation, polymer bearings are generally more expensive than conventional steel bearings. 3D printing of polymer bearings could be a solution to specific requirements; however, additive manufacturing processes have their own problems. Since the materials used in production with the 3D method are polymer-based, whether the bearings produced with this method can be used instead of the original polymer bearings has become a new research topic. Therefore, in this study, in order to examine the distinctive behavior throughout its service life, a new hybrid polymer bearing was developed using steel balls taken from the original polymer bearing, both inner and outer bearings of which were produced with a 3D printer, to create hybrid polymer bearings, using the Fused Deposition Method (FDM) has been obtained. Bearings are tested under load, and vibration data are acquired in order to investigate their fatigue behavior during their service life. The results indicate that Additive Manufacturing offers a workable way to create a polymer hybrid ball bearing. Evaluation of carvacrol (95%) for the management of parasitic bee mites, Varroa destructor
Beekeeping is an agricultural sector that is practiced worldwide. This sector faces many challenges. The biggest challenge is to control diseases without leaving residues of veterinary drugs in the bee products. The pest that causes the most problems for beekeepers in this sector is the mite called Varroa destructor. Natural essential oils are often used to keep this mite under control. This study found that carvacrol, a non-volatile compound in essential oils, effectively controls this mite under field conditions. In addition to its acaricidal properties, carvacrol has antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anticancer, and immune-modulating effects. However, its long-term impact on honey bees is not well understood. The mite control rate in colonies fed 1%, 3%, and 5% carvacrol was 2.96%, 14.49%, and 30.33%, respectively (P < 0.001). There was no statistical difference in the amounts of sealed brood and bee-covered frames in the treated colonies. Although these values are not very high, it is considered that the addition of carvacrol to the colonies' feed during the feeding period supports the other control methods used. It is recommended that researchers conduct similar studies on the non-evaporating active components of various essential oils
Efficacy of machine learning models for the prediction of death occurrence and counts associated with foodborne illnesses and hospitalizations in the United States
Foodborne outbreak data released through national surveillance systems provides essential information about the results of investigations. This study evaluates the efficacy of machine learning (ML) models for the prediction of death occurrence and counts associated with foodborne illnesses and hospitalizations in the United States. Confirmed foodborne outbreaks were obtained from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Outbreak Reporting System (NORS). Foodborne pathogens causing at least 10 deaths in total were selected for analysis. The binary classification performance (accuracy, %) and prediction efficacy of ML models (mean absolute errors, MAE) were used for evaluation. A total of 10,069 foodborne outbreaks with confirmed single etiology resulted in 275,827 illnesses, 18,579 hospitalizations, and 458 deaths. Salmonella was the leading causative agent (54.23 %) of bacterial foodborne outbreaks, followed by pathogenic Escherichia coli (12.13 %). Norovirus (96.69 %) and Cyclospora cayetanensis (60.76 %) represented major causes of viral and protozoan/parasite foodborne outbreaks, respectively. The classification performance of ML models ranged from 88.9 to 94.5 % for the overall prediction of death occurrence associated with foodborne illnesses and hospitalizations. Prediction efficacy of ML models for death counts remained <0.9 with MAE, except for Listeria monocytogenes with an average MAE of 134.1 ± 11.1. This study indicates the potential use and performance of ML algorithms for the prediction of death occurrence or counts caused by foodborne etiological agents to improve public health safety based on the numbers of illnesses and hospitalizations. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved
Data security with replication for cloud computing
Cloud computing is an advanced technology that provides access to different services via the internet. These services include applications such as servers, networking, data storage, databases, and software. For this reason, this technology is very popular for institutions and individuals for many reasons such as cost, production, efficiency and speed.In this study, data replication is discussed in order to solve security breaches in cloud computing technologies. Data replication is the process of making one or more backup copies of a database or other data store, in whole or in part. The primary benefit of data replication is to ensure the availability of data recovery and functional critical applications in disaster situations. In such a case, if the primary data source is damaged, a copy of that data source can be created. In addition, transactional consistency is ensured so that data is up- to- date and consistent. Data replication tools can lighten the IT burden of creating and managing enterprise- wide data replication operations. Düzlemsel Çelik Çerçevelerin Performansa Dayalı Optimum Sismik Tasarımının Çok Sınıflı MC-TLBO Algoritmasıyla Karşılaştırmalı Analizi
Bu çalışmada, moment aktaran çelik çerçevelerin performansa dayalı optimum sismik tasarımı (PBOSD), Jaya (JA), Öğretme-Öğrenme Tabanlı Optimizasyon (TLBO) ve TLBO'nun çok sınıflı varyantı olan MC-TLBO algoritmaları ile entegre edilerek gerçekleştirilmiştir. TLBO, JA ve MC-TLBO algoritmalarıyla elde edilen sonuçlar, MATLAB ve OpenSees yazılımlarının etkileşimli bir şekilde kullanılmasıyla elde edilmiştir. Bu algoritmaların performansını değerlendirmek amacıyla literatürde yer alan iki düzlemsel çelik çerçeve örneği kullanılmıştır. Elde edilen sonuçlar, Geleneksel Tasarım (CD) yaklaşımı ile Karınca Kolonisi Optimizasyonu (ACO), Genetik Algoritma (GA) ve Yüklü Sistem Arama (CSS) gibi diğer optimizasyon algoritmalarıyla karşılaştırılmıştır. Yapılan karşılaştırmalı analizler, özellikle minimum yapısal ağırlık ve analiz sayısı gibi temel performans kriterlerine odaklanmıştır. Elde edilen bulgular, MC-TLBO algoritmasının CD, ACO, GA ve CSS yöntemlerine kıyasla daha üstün tasarım sonuçları ürettiğini ve etkin bir optimizasyon yaklaşımı olduğunu ortaya koymaktadır
The Effect of Music on Fear and Anxiety of Children During Tomography: A Randomized Controlled Double-Blind Study
Aim: This study was conducted to determine the effect of a musical intervention during computed tomography (CT) on fear, anxiety and vital signs of children. Method: This randomized, double-blind controlled trial was conducted according to the Consolidated Standards of Reporting Studies (CONSORT) guidelines. The study sample included children aged between 6 and 10 years who met the inclusion criteria and underwent CT scan in the emergency department of a public hospital in eastern Turkey between 18 April and 20 May 2023. The research was completed with a total of 60 children, randomized to one of two groups. The nursing intervention of the study was playing music. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews using the Child and Family Information Form, the Children's Fear Scale (CFS), Children's Anxiety Meter-State (CAM-S) and the Vital Signs Monitoring Form (pulse, blood pressure and oxygen saturation). Ethical principles were followed in the research. Results: The level of fear, anxiety, pulse rate and respiratory rate of the children in the musical intervention group during CT scanning were lower than in the control group (p < 0.05). No difference was found between the groups in terms of oxygen saturation (p < 0.05). Conclusion and Recommendations for Implementation: The results of this study suggest that musical intervention during CT scanning in children is effective in reducing the level of fear and anxiety and stabilizing vital signs. By using such nonpharmacologic methods, nurses can provide support to children and alleviate emotional difficulties during procedures

As people started to live together, the need to fulfill some common services arose. It is possible to argue that local governments were born as a result of the search for the fulfillment of these needs. Local democracy is a model of democracy, which can be defined as ‘the government of the people’ at the local level. Today, due to the increasing importance of democracy, the strengthening of local governments is discussed as an important issue. As a matter of fact, the strengthening of local governments is of great importance since it reinforces the importance of democracy. In order to be able to talk about a strong local government, it is thought that it is important to ensure the effective participation of citizens living in the local government unit to the administration, to ensure that the local government unit is strong in terms of resources, to ensure that the services provided to the public are effective and efficient, to equip the local government unit with technological facilities and to increase the opportunities for local cooperation. In light of these explanations, the study aims to reveal the importance of the subject by utilizing theoretical sources.Insanlarin bir arada yasamaya baslamalari ile ortak bazi hizmetlerin giderilmesi ihtiyaci dogmustur. Bu ihtiyaçlarin giderilmesi için girisilen arayislarin sonucunda yerel yönetimlerin dogdugunu savunmak mümkündür. Öz bir tanimlama ile ‘halkin yönetimi’ seklinde tanimlanabilecek olan demokrasinin yerel düzeyde uygulama modeline yerel demokrasi denilebilmektedir. Günümüzde demokrasinin artan öneminden dolayi yerel yönetimlerin güçlendirilmesi önemli bir konu olarak tartisilmaktadir. Nitekim yerel yönetimlerin güçlendirilmesi demokrasinin öneminin perçinlenmesi anlamina geleceginden önem arz etmektedir. Güçlü bir yerel yönetimden bahsedilebilmesi için yerel yönetim biriminde yasayan vatandaslarin yönetime etkin katiliminin saglanmasi, yerel yönetim biriminin kaynaklar açisindan güçlü olmasi, halka sunulan hizmetlerin etkin ve verimli olmasi, yerel yönetim biriminin teknolojik imkânlarla donatilmasi ve yerel isbirligi olanaklarinin artirilmasi gibi olanaklar bakimindan iyilestirmelerin önemli oldugu düsünülmektedir. Bu açiklamalar isiginda çalisma teorik kaynaklardan faydalanarak konunun önemini ortaya koymayi amaçlamaktadir
Effect of rubber interlayer and curvature angle on impact performance of honeycomb sandwich composite structures
The aim of this study is to numerically investigate the effects of curve angle and rubber interlayer on the impact performance of honeycomb sandwich composite structures. Low-velocity impact simulations were performed in the LS DYNA finite element program to investigate the effects of honeycomb structural parameters, curve angle and rubber interlayer on peak contact force, energy absorption efficiency (eta) and damage mode. Progressive damage analysis based on the combination of Hashin damage criterion, Bilinear traction-separation law with Cohesive Zone Model (CZM) was performed using MAT-54 material model. When the honeycomb core cell wall thickness (Tc) increased from 0.1 mm to 0.5 mm, the maximum increase in peak contact force value occurred in Tf=0.5 mm specimen with 111.6%. The energy absorbed rate decreased by 5.16% in Tf=1.5 mm specimen. When moving from a flat panel structure (alpha=0 & ring;) to a curve structure, the peak contact force value decreased by a maximum of 38%. However, the energy absorption efficiency increased by a maximum of 6.28%. When the rubber interlayer was added to the flat sandwich panel, the peak force value decreased by 2.78% while the absorbed energy efficiency increased by 5.3%. When the rubber interlayer was added to the curve angle alpha=60 & ring; panel, the peak force value decreased by 4.9% while the energy absorption efficiency increased by 0.52%
Frequency of Intestinal Parasites in Patients with Diabetes
This study aims to determine whether patients with diabetes are at risk for intestinal parasites. The study included 200 diabetics and 150 healthy i ndividuals without any chronic disease. Data such as age, gender, diagnosis, and patient laboratory test results were obtained from the hospital automation system. Stool samples were examined by native-Lugol, concentration, modified acid-fast, and trichrome staining methods. Intestinal parasites were found in 27.5% of the diabetic patients and 14% in the control group; the difference between the two groups was statistically significant (p=0.001). Out of 200 patients, Blastocystis hominis was found in 44 (22%), Cryptosporidium spp. in one (0.5%), B. hominis and Entamoeba coli in five (2.5%), Giardia intestinalis in two (1%), B. hominis and G. intestinalis in one (0.5%), Taenia spp. in one (0.5%) and Chilomastix mesnili in one (0.5%). In the diabetic patient group, statistically significant differences were found between age (p=0.043), duration of diabetes (p=0.006), fasting blood glucose (p=0.028) and HbA1c value (p=0.01) and presence of intestinal parasites. No statistically significant differences were found between place of residence, biochemical values such as cholesterol and LDL, use of insulin and antidiabetic agents, presence of another disease such as hypertension, COPD, neuropathy, nephropathy and intestinal parasite positivity. Patients with diabetes can be considered a risk group in terms of intestinal parasite infections. Furthermore, individuals with a history of diabetes of more than 10 years and poor glycemic control are at a higher risk for intestinal parasites. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved
