Decoding Securities Class Actions: Determinants of Outcomes in the USA
Securities class actions are considered to be a prominent tool to create a deterrence impact on companies whose wrongdoing has affected their stock prices. Inspired from fraud-market theory, securities class actions do protect small and large investors. It becomes critically important to understand the factors that could impact the outcomes in these lawsuits. This research aims to examine the determinants of settlements specially in securities class actions. The study utilizes a hand-collected data set of 1,241 cases, to analyses the impact of variables that are related to case merit, defendant strength and judicial proceedings. The findings reveal that meritorious lawsuits have higher chances of resulting in a settlement outcome. On the other hand, the market valuation of the defending firm reduces these chances. Judicial experience has a positive influence on facilitating settlements. These conclusions contribute to a better understanding of the factors influencing the settlement outcome and can help in promoting informed policy decisions to stimulate settlement outcomes in such class actions
Waterlogging, Health and Healthcare Access in Southwest Bangladesh
Waterlogging, a form of stagnant flooding, is increasingly affecting southwest Bangladesh and is expected to intensify with the expansion of shrimp farming and climate change, contributing to environmental degradation. However, its impacts on health, health service utilisation and household health expenditures remain poorly understood. We conducted a quantitative study between August and September 2022 in Tala, a disaster-prone sub-district in southwest Satkhira. Data were collected from 596 randomly selected households. 1266 adults were surveyed, from which 768 reported recent illness. Of these 768 adults, 213 reported formal health care utilisation for their first visit. Information about household’s exposure to waterlogging in the past 12 months was also collected from the households. Bivariate analyses were used to test the association between the outcome variables (illness report, formal health care utilisation, and out-of-pocket expenditure) and other variables (age, gender, education, being the head of the household, type of illness, wealth index of the household, household size and experience of waterlogging in the past 12 months). Two probit models followed for illness report and formal health care utilisation. Of these 1266 adults, waterlogging experience was significantly associated with illness reporting [Coef: 0.47; CI 0.14,0.80], p=0.006). However, it was not significantly associated with health care utilisation for the 768 adults reporting any illness [Coef: -0.11; CI -0.51,0.029], p=0.600). Bivariate analyses for the association of healthcare expenditure and waterlogging present no significant association (p=0.635). Considering significant associations, household wealth (wealthiest/poorest) and age (older/younger), were positively associated with illness reporting. In contrast, gender (males/females) and household size (larger/smaller) were negatively associated with illness reporting. For formal health service utilisation, on the 768 adults reporting illness, a negative association was observed for education (compared to higher education), and a positive association for wealth (average wealthy/poorest) and for chronic illness (/acute). These findings highlight the need to account for the detrimental health impacts of waterlogging when strengthening Bangladesh's health system

Safety and efficacy of neoadjuvant immunotherapy with durvalumab (MEDI 4736) in combination with neoadjuvant chemotherapy (gemcitabine/cisplatin or carboplatin) in patients with operable high-risk upper tract urothelial carcinoma.
International audienceBackground: Most patients following radical nephroureterectomy (RNU) for upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) face a poor prognosis. Combination of chemotherapy and immunotherapy in neoadjuvant setting have demonstrated survival improvement in several tumors. Additional systemic therapy in a neoadjuvant setting may prolong survival for UTUC patients, especially those after RNU who are ineligible to receive nephrotoxic chemotherapy. Methods: Phase 2 clinical trial (NCT04617756) was conducted in 10 French centers. Eligible patients had non metastatic, high-grade disease on ureteroscopic tumor biopsy or on urine cytology and infiltrative aspect of renal pelvis/ureteral wall on CT imaging. Subjects received a combination of: Durvalumab/Gemcitabine/Cisplatin (cohort 1) or Carboplatin (cohort 2) every 3 weeks for a total of 4 cycles based on glomerular filtration rate, prior to RNU. The primary objective was to assess the pathological complete response (ypT0) rate (pCR) of each combination. Results: A total of 50 patients were enrolledbetween 2021 and 2023 (31 in cohort 1 and 19 in cohort 2). Median age was 66 years old (range 38-79), 58% were males. 90% of patients (44) received 4 cycles of treatment, 3 patients 3 cycles and 2 patients received 2 cycles. Five patients switched for carboplatin during chemotherapy. We observed in cohort 1 : 20/31 (65%) patients with non infiltrative residual tumor; In cohort 2 : 9/19 (42%) patients (table). Secondary endpoint was safety, no immunotherapy-mediated AE was observed, 2 patients had Grade 3 neutropenia, 1 grade 4, 1 patient had grade 3 thrombopenia and 1 grade 3 anemia. Conclusions: Combination of durvalumab with platin-based chemotherapy, especially cisplatin, showed promising activity in UTUC, with the occurrence of complete responses and a high rate of non-infiltrative residual tumor. Safety profile was secure without increasing surgical risk. A randomized Phase 3 controlled study comparing neoadjuvant chemotherapy with chemotherapy combined with immunotherapy in patients with high-risk localized UTUC (iNDUCT-3) will open soon to validate these encouraging results. Linking Industry Sectors and Financial Statements: A Hybrid Approach for Company Classification
International audienceThe identification of the financial characteristics of industry sectors has a large importance in accounting audit, allowing auditors to prioritize the most important area during audit. Existing company classification standards such as the Standard Industry Classification (SIC) code allow to map a company to a category based on its activity and products. In this paper, we explore the potential of machine learning algorithms and language models to analyze the relationship between those categories and companies' financial statements. We propose a supervised company classification methodology and analyze several types of representations for financial statements. Existing works address this task using solely numerical information in financial records. Our findings show that beyond numbers, textual information occurring in financial records can be leveraged by language models to match the performance of dedicated decision tree-based classifiers, while providing better explainability and more generic accounting representations. We think this work can serve as a preliminary work towards semi-automatic auditing. Refractory high entropy alloy thin films with controlled oxygen addition
International audienceDeveloping new materials with high strength and ductility that can withstand harsh environments remains a key challenge for microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) and energy storage applications. Refractory high entropy alloys (RHEAs) with a BCC structure can represent promising materials for these industrial applications due to their high strength, oxidation, and corrosion resistance [1]. However, these alloys often exhibit low ductility at room temperature [2]. To overcome this drawback, one approach consists of adding ductile FCC elements to the BCC phase to promote the formation of a dual-phase (BCC-HCP) structure, balancing strength-ductility [3]. Another strategy is the addition of small amounts of nonmetallic elements, particularly oxygen, which form ordered oxygen complexes that act as dislocation pinning points and help mitigate brittle behavior [4].However, most of these studies focus on bulk RHEAs, while there are limited studies on thin film counterparts (RHEA-TFs, thickness < 1µm), especially their relationship between microstructure and mechanical properties.Firstly, I will present some preliminary results on Fex(CoCrNi)100-x HEA-TFs deposited by magnetron sputtering, with Fe content varying from 13 to 29 at.%. CoCrNi showed a dual FCC-HCP phase, contributing to a hardness of 9.7 GPa and an elastic modulus of 204.4 GPa, while the FCC phase was stabilized with Fe addition.Then, I will present the core research of my PhD thesis, focusing on the deposition of TiZrHf RHEA-TFs via magnetron sputtering with a progressive addition of Al (up to 25 at.%) and O (up to 15 at.%), to investigate film growth mechanisms, atomic structure evolution, and microscale mechanical properties using a scale-bridging approach from the nm up to the µm scale.
