A deep learning-assisted hybrid model for electric dosimetry in electroporation therapies
International audienceAccurate electric dosimetry is essential for predicting treatment outcomes in Irreversible Electroporation (IRE), a promising non-thermal tumor ablation technique. However, real-time 3D electric field computation remains computationally expensive, limiting its practical use in clinical settings. In this study, we propose a hybrid approach combining deep learning (DL)-based initialization with an iterative numerical solver to accelerate dose map calculation. Specifically, we employ a convolutional neural network (CNN) to predict basis functions, which are subsequently refined using a Biconjugate Gradient Stabilized (Bi-CGSTAB) solver to maintain physical accuracy. We evaluate our method on data from 10 patients undergoing IRE liver ablation under real-time clinical conditions. Our results demonstrate a 10× speedup compared to conventional solvers while maintaining comparable accuracy. This hybrid method offers a promising pathway toward fast and reliable electric dosimetry for on-line IRE procedures

SLC10A7 regulates O-GalNAc glycosylation and Ca2+ homeostasis in the secretory pathway: insights into SLC10A7-CDG
International audienceAbstract Glycans are known to be fundamental for many cellular and physiological functions. Congenital disorders of glycosylation (CDG) currently encompassing over 160 subtypes, are characterized by glycan synthesis and/or processing defects. Despite the increasing number of CDG patients, therapeutic options remain very limited as our knowledge on glycan synthesis is fragmented. The emergence of CDG resulting from defects in ER/ Golgi homeostasis makes this even more difficult. SLC10A7 belongs to the SLC10 protein family, known as bile acid and steroid transport family, exhibiting a unique structure. It shows a ubiquitous expression and is linked to negative calcium regulation in cells. The mechanisms by which SLC10A7 deficiency leads to Golgi glycosylation abnormalities are unknown. The present study identifies major O -glycosylation defects in both SLC10A7 KO HAP1 cells and SLC10A7-CDG patient fibroblasts and reveals an increased ER and Golgi calcium contents. We also show that the abundance of COSMC and C1GALT1 is altered in SLC10A7-CDG patient cells, as well as the subcellular Golgi localization of the Ca 2+ -binding Cab45 protein. Finally, we demonstrate that supraphysiological manganese supplementation suppresses the deficient electrophoretic mobility of TGN46 by an aberrant transfer of GalNAc residues, and reveal COSMC Mn 2+ sensitivity. These findings provide novel insights into the mechanisms of Golgi glycosylation defects in SLC10A7-deficient cells. They show that SLC10A7 is a key Golgi transmembrane protein maintaining the tight regulation of Ca 2+ homeostasis in the ER and Golgi compartments, both essential for glycosylation
Teaching Digital Health at Sorbonne University: The Year One Review of the SN@SU Project
International audienceThe French healthcare system faces challenges including an aging population, chronic diseases, medical staff shortages, and global pandemics, highlighting the need for a more sustainable model. At the same time, technological advances are reshaping healthcare, leading France to launch the “Digital Health Acceleration Strategy” under the France 2030 plan, aimed at equipping future health professionals as well as students in computer sciences and engineering with comprehensive digital health skills. Education plays a vital role, as shown by the SN@SU project led by Sorbonne University. This five-year initiative (2023–2028) aims to train 35,000 students in health, paramedical, and IT fields through partnerships with 17 institutions. In its first year, over 4,000 students were trained using innovative approaches such as virtual simulations, immersive environments, and e-learning. While younger students valued practical sessions, advanced students reported limited hands-on experience. Early feedback reflects both excitement about digital health learning and the need for better integration into curricula, underscoring the project’s potential to shape digital health education
The ethics of passport abolition in the French interwar press
International audienceThe present regime of obligatory passports was a war measure originally intended to be temporary. In 1919, the Treaty of Versailles sought to reestablish freedom of movement that prevailed before the WWI. At the League of Nations, it was sometimes pointed out that “public opinion undoubtedly expects at least a step towards the abolition, to the widest extent possible, of the passport system." (League of Nations, 1925).The paper addresses two questions: firstly, was public opinion really hoping for the abolition of passports? Secondly, if it is the case, what value judgements or ethical principles supported the view that obligatory passports should be abolished? To answer these questions, I have collected and analyzed more than 750 newspaper articles published in France between 1919 and 1939, which mentioned the phrase “abolition/suppression of passports”
Cost-Effectiveness Analysis of a Machine Learning–Based eHealth System to Predict and Reduce Emergency Department Visits and Unscheduled Hospitalizations of Older People Living at Home: Retrospective Study
International audienceBackground Dependent older people or those losing their autonomy are at risk of emergency hospitalization. Digital systems that monitor health remotely could be useful in reducing these visits by detecting worsening health conditions earlier. However, few studies have assessed the medico-economic impact of these systems, particularly for older people. Objective The objective of this study was to compare the clinical and economic impacts of an eHealth device in real life compared with the usual monitoring of older people living at home. Methods This study was a comparative, retrospective, and controlled trial on data collected between May 31, 2021, and May 31, 2022, in one health care and home nursing center located in Brittany, France. Participants had to be aged >75 years, living at home, and receiving assistance from the home care service for at least 1 month. We implemented among the intervention group an eHealth system that produces an alert for a high risk of emergency department visits or hospitalizations. After each home visit, the home care aides completed a questionnaire on participants’ functional status using a smartphone app, and the information was processed in real time by a previously developed machine learning algorithm that identifies patients at risk of an emergency visit within 7 to 14 days. In the case of predicted risk, the eHealth system alerted a coordinating nurse who could then inform the family carer and the patient’s nurses or general practitioner. Results A total of 120 patients were included in the study, with 60 in the control group and 60 in the intervention group. Among the 726 visits from the intervention group that were not followed by an alert, only 4 (0.6%) resulted in hospitalizations (P<.001), confirming the relevance of the system’s alerts. Over the course of the study, 37 hospitalizations were recorded for 25 (20.8%) of the 120 patients. Additionally, of the 120 patients, 9 (7.5%) were admitted to a nursing home, and 7 (5.8%) died. Patients in the intervention group (56/60, 93%) remained at home significantly more often than those in the control group (48/60, 80%; P=.03). The total cost of primary care and hospitalization during the study was €167,000 (€1=US $1.09), with €108,000 (64.81%) attributed to the intervention group (P=.20). Conclusions This study presents encouraging results on the impact of a remote medical monitoring system for older adults, demonstrating a reduction in both emergency department visits and hospitalization costs. L’apprentissage expérientiel confronté à la multimodalité des formations : un retour d’expérience
International audienceThis article addresses methodological, didactic and pedagogical issues raised by a transposition of a face-to-face training device during the Covid-19 pandemics (during and just after). Initially the training entitled “human relationships in professional context” was developed from a face-to-face experiential approach. The transposition in distance, hybrid or co-modality training devices led the trainers to reexamine the concepts of experiential learning and reflexivity.
