Imitation of Business Models: The Case of Online News Industry in France
International audienceIn the rapidly evolving landscape of online business models within the news industry, the phenomenon of business model imitation hasemerged as a prominent yet understudied aspect. This paper investigates the forms and implications of strategic imitation on competitiondynamics and economic sustainability, focusing on French news producers from 2015 to 2020. Leveraging an extensive original datasetand methodology, our findings reveal a prevalent trend of imitation, particularly driven by rivalry-based dynamics. However, this copycatstrategy poses long-term risks to industry performance and societal systems. To ensure economic viability and foster innovation, industrystakeholders must prioritize the development of original and forward-thinking strategies in response to the challenges posed by imitation
Quand le corps dénutri devient problème. Savoirs médicaux, discours politiques et transition nutritionnelle à La Réunion, de l’après-guerre aux années 1970
This paper examines representations of the nutritional health attributed to the Reunionese population during the first decades of the island’s “departmentalization”, initiated in 1946 with the end of its colonial status. The analysis is based on archival ethnography that brings together medical dissertations, anticolonial press sources, and historical scholarship. Two dynamics are investigated: on the one hand, the progressive medicalization of malnutrition through the lens of new scientific knowledge; and on the other hand, the symbolic reconfiguration of Réunionese bodies within the framework of the island’s new political status. The results show that widespread undernutrition was gradually reframed as a public health issue requiring an institutional response. This work sheds light on how medical knowledge and political mobilizations jointly transformed representations of the bodies of the Réunionese population.
This paper examines the role of underutilized species in food systems, using Reunion island, a French overseas territory, as a case study. In this context, certain food sources have been neglected, both in the structuring of the island’s agricultural model and in the local dietary trends.First, this contribution identifies and discusses foodstuffs that can be considered marginalized in this territory. It presents species historically underrepresented in Réunion's agri-food system during the second half of the 20th century: tuber crops, pulses and leafy vegetables.Next, two factors contributing to the marginalization of these foodstuffs are analyzed. The first factor concerns their symbolic dimension, as the social value attributed to consuming certain products varies. The second factor concerns their techno-agronomic dimension, given the varying availability of knowledge regarding their cultivation and processing. Finally, the paper highlights two levers for increasing their role in the diet. Arguing that, in the Réunionese context, these foodstuffs can contribute to the sustainability of the food system, it concludes by emphasizing the need to develop diverse forms of knowledge to achieve this goal.
Polymorphisms in circadian rhythm genes and the risk of differentiated thyroid cancer
International audienceIntroduction: Circadian rhythms are controlled by biological clocks regulated at the molecular level by a set of circadian genes operating through a negative feedback loop. These genes also regulate key biological processes, including cell proliferation, cell cycle, and apoptosis. Methods: We investigated the role of circadian gene polymorphisms in the risk of differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) and their interaction with DTC risk factors. Data were obtained from 463 DTC cases and 482 unrelated controls of European ancestry, selected from two population-based case-control studies conducted in France. Associations with 570 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 23 circadian genes were evaluated using multivariate logistic regression models. Gene- and pathway-level associations and gene–environment interactions were analyzed using the adaptive rank truncated product (ARTP) method. Results and discussion: We found no significant association between DTC risk and circadian gene polymorphisms at the SNP, gene, or pathway levels. However, we observed statistically significant interactions between smoking status and SNPs rs11204897 ( RORC ) and rs1012477 ( PER3 ), as well as with the PER3 gene and the overall circadian pathway. These results suggest that smoking status may modulate the association between DTC and polymorphisms in circadian genes. Further studies are needed to confirm these findings
Neoadjuvant immune checkpoint inhibitors for patients with resectable stage III/IV melanoma: A nationwide real-life study in France (NEOMEL)
International audienceDespite the clear therapeutic benefits of neoadjuvant treatment (NT) with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in clinical trials, the efficacy of NT ICIs (NT-ICI) and the optimal regimen for patients (pts) with resectable metastatic melanoma (RMM) remain to be confirmed in real life. Objective To assess the efficacy and safety of NT-ICI among pts with RMM in real life. Methods NEOMEL is a French retrospective multicentric cohort study. Dermato-oncologists from the French group of skin cancers included pts treated with NT-ICI for RMM (AJCC 8th stage III or IV) between July 2016 and April 2024. Pts were treated either with NT anti-programmed cell death protein-1 (anti-PD-1) monotherapy or with the combination of anti–cytotoxic T lymphocyte-associated protein-4 (anti-CTLA-4) plus anti-PD-1 (1-mg/kg ipilimumab (IPI) and 3-mg/kg nivolumab (NIVO); or 3-mg/kg IPI and 1-mg/kg NIVO). The primary endpoint was the pathological complete response (pCR) rate. The secondary endpoints were pathological response according to the International Neoadjuvant Melanoma Consortium criteria, radiological response, the occurrence of immune-related adverse events (irAEs) including those of ≥ grade 3 and outcomes with recurrence-free survivals (RFS) and event-free survivals (EFS). Results Among the 174 included pts, 149 (86%) underwent surgery. NT-ICI achieved a high pCR rate of 43% (95% CI, 34.9-51.3), including 44.7% (95% CI, 35.4–54.3) with NT-anti-PD-1 and 37.1% (95% CI, 21.5–55.1) with NT-IPI-NIVO (p=0.427). The major (complete + near-complete) pathological response rate was 53.2%. Radiological responses were observed in 49.9% of pts, including 12 complete responses (12.1%), of which 91.7% (n=11) corresponded to pCR. Severe immune-related adverse events (irAEs) occurred more frequently with NT-IPI-NIVO (24.4%) compared to NT-anti-PD-1 (3.1%) (p<0.001). The median RFS was 29.61 months (95% CI, 27.70-not reached [NR]) with significantly higher RFS in pts with pCR than no-pCR (HR, 0.218 [95% CI, 0.082–0.583], p=0.0009). The median EFS was 35.7 months 2 (95% CI, 28-NR). Conclusion In this retrospective real-life study, NT-ICI confirms its efficacy in RMM pts, achieving high pathological response rates. However, dual checkpoint inhibition with IPI-NIVO was associated with a higher risk of severe irAEs. These findings underscore the relevance of NT-ICI for RMM in clinical practice and required further confirmation

Adequacy of the Diagnostic Workup of Suspected Physical Abuse in Young Children: An Audit in the Paris Metropolitan Area
International audienceAn adequate diagnostic workup of suspected child physical abuse (CPA) is crucial for an accurate diagnosis and to consider differential diagnoses. We aimed to audit the actual practices in Paris area hospitals and evaluate their adherence to current clinical guidelines. METHODS:We used specific discharge codes suggesting CPA in the Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris clinical data warehouse to identify cases of young children < 2 years old hospitalized for suspected CPA in 2018-19 in 7 university hospitals. We systematically reviewed the electronic medical records to confirm the suspected CPA. We compared the observed proportion of the diagnostic tests performed to that expected according to current national and international clinical guidelines. RESULTS:Among the 97 included children (median age 5 months), 60% had intracranial injuries, 40% skin injuries, and 30% skeletal injuries; 8% died. At least one of the key diagnostic tests (radiological skeletal survey, eye fundus examination, and head computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging) expected to be performed systematically according to guidelines was not performed in 14 (14%) of children. Bone metabolism investigation was performed in 33% of the 43 children with ≥1 unexplained fracture(s). Hemostasis and coagulation investigations were performed in 82% of the 76 children with bruises or internal bleeding. CONCLUSIONS:Practices observed in the Paris area university hospitals for the diagnostic workup of suspected CPA were not always consistent with guidelines, thus leading to risk of misdiagnosis. Obstacles to the complete implementation of guidelines, such as physician's nonadherence, must be identified and overcome.</div
