Verbless Sentences: An English and Russian Multidimensional Contrastive Corpus Study

No full text
Autre titre : Verbless Sentences: A Contrastive Corpus Approach to Absence in English and Russian.National audienceCentral to any theory of language is the question of what precisely constitutes a sentence. This seminar explores the theoretically controversial and often marginalized phenomenon of the verbless sentence, i.e. structures in which the typical syntactic marker of sentential status – the verbal predicate – is absent. Although such structures exist in many languages (e.g. Bertinetto et al., forthcoming; Goldberg & Perek, 2019; Bîlbîie, 2017; Landolfi et al., 2010; Merle, 2009; Elugardo & Stainton, 2005; Behr et al., 2005; Guillemin-Flescher, 2005; Fernández & Ginzburg, 2002; Lefeuvre, 2001; Benveniste, 1971), their study has been limited by challenges in automatic retrieval. We develop their processing and take a contrastive corpus approach to the phenomenon. Persuaded that linguistic constraints hidden from a monolingual perspective can emerge in cross-linguistic comparison, we examine the structures in two languages that have profoundly different typological characteristics regarding the verb: English and Russian (e.g. Stassen, 2013; Weiss, 2013; Kopotev, 2007; McShane, 2000). We develop a multidimensional methodological framework that combines contrastive linguistics with corpus-driven methods and enunciative analysis, with the goal of (a) providing a corpus-based description of the semantico-pragmatic features associated with the absence of the verb in English and Russian and (b) exploring the theoretical implications of the results for linguistic models of the ‘sentence’

The ambivalent ‘emotional legacies’ of the 2011 Egyptian and Syrian revolutions

No full text
International audienceThe sociology of political emotions has undergone a revival over the last twenty years. Most authors have, however, focused on affects and emotions as they unfold in collective action. Less has been written about the 'emotional legacies' of activism, understood here as 'the emotional residue that emerges from the remembered past, including regret, pride, resentment, nostalgia, and tiredness' (Nussio, 2012). We aim to contribute to this understudied topic by focusing on two case studies -Egypt and Syriawhere the politics of affect has been generally disregarded. More precisely, we seek to provide some responses to the following questions: How do participants in extraordinary events such as revolutions recall these moments and what affects and emotions do they mobilize when remembering them? And how do they experience the aftermath of these disruptive processes emotionally? Based on a Syrian-Egyptian comparative perspective and a microlevel approach, we study the 'emotional legacies' of revolutionary activism, which entailed a multitude of ambivalent emotions. We argue that this ambivalence has persisted across the years, and that conflicting memories and narratives about the revolutionary experience are entangled with affective ruptures, continuities, and transformations of activists' present. Our paper is based on biographical material collected in Lebanon and Turkey (for the Syrian case) between 2014 and 2022, and in Egypt and Lebanon (for the Egyptian case) from 2011 to 2023.</p

High coverage and equitable distribution of COVID-19 vaccine uptake in two vulnerable areas in Bangladesh

International audienceBangladesh completed a primary series of COVID-19 vaccinations for about 86 individuals per 100 population as of 5 July 2023. However, ensuring higher coverage in vulnerable areas is challenging. We report on the COVID-19 vaccine uptake and associated factors among adults in two vulnerable areas in Bangladesh. We conducted a cross-sectional study between August and September 2022 in Duaripara, a slum in northeast Dhaka (in-migration site), and Tala, a disaster-prone sub-district in southwest Satkhira (out-migration site). We surveyed 1,239 adults in Duaripara and 1,263 adults in Tala from 625 and 596 randomly selected households, respectively. We reported coverage and examined associations between the uptake and demographic and socioeconomic characteristics using multilevel mixed-effects generalized linear regression models. We checked for spatial autocorrelation to assess geographical patterns in vaccine distribution. First- and second-dose coverage was about 91% and 80.4% in Duaripara and 96.6% and 92.2% in Tala, respectively. Individuals above 40 were more likely to be vaccinated (IRR: 1.12, p-value = 0.04 for Duaripara, and IRR: 1.14, p-value <0.01 for Tala). Professions requiring more outdoor interactions had a higher likelihood of receiving the vaccine. In Tala, television access (IRR: 2.09, p-value <0.01) and micro-credit membership (IRR: 1.50, p-value = 0.05) were positively associated with receiving a booster dose and negatively associated with smart-phone access (IRR: 0.58, p-value = 0.03). Moreover, temporarily migrated respondents were more likely to be unvaccinated (IRR: 0.87, p-value = 0.04). Income was not associated, indicating equitable distribution. Moreover, no geographical clustering was detected. The credit for high COVID-19 vaccine coverage in Bangladesh can be attributed to the country’s longstanding success in implementing immunization programs, which relied on community mobilization and effective health education to generate demand. However, to ensure comprehensive coverage in vulnerable areas, targeted interventions can help increase uptake by addressing specific sociodemographic differences

No full text
International audienceThis is an Open Access book. The international political economy is confronted by a number of overlapping crises. These include the climate emergency, rapid technological advancement, the high volume of globalised trade and financial flows, cross-border labour movement, rising inequality, geopolitical tensions, and frequent economic crises and natural disasters. Many developing countries are going through a period of urgent transformation and transition to adopt new policies to cope with such challenges and achieve and maintain sustainable and inclusive socioeconomic development. This path-breaking volume explores the issues shaping the response of Brunei Darussalam, long dependent on its oil and gas sector, to these challenges. The discussions presented here are framed by the notion of ‘development in transition’—a mix of well-designed policies driven by timely implementation, enforcement and monitoring, as well as international cooperation to ensure sustainable development and distribution of benefits on an equitable basis. Through fine-grained analyses of key economic sectors—including natural resources, employment patterns, financial services, global value chains, international trade, tourism and the role of the public sector—the contributors offer a critical assessment of Brunei’s policy responses. This transitional policy mix is situated in relation to the overarching development strategy called Wawasan Brunei 2035 (Brunei Vision 2035), which broadly maps onto the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals. Academic scholars, university students and others interested in the study of contemporary Brunei and broader questions of economic transition in Asia will find this volume an invaluable resource for a deeper understanding of how development paths and priorities are being managed to meet pressing global and local challenges. A mathematical model for coregistered data from electroencephalography and diffusive optical tomography

No full text
International audienceA mathematical model for coregistered time-dependent electroencephalography (EEG) and diffusive optical tomography (DOT) is developed and analysed. Evolution with time is introduced by considering time-dependent dipolar sources in the EEG model and time-dependent optical parameters for DOT. Dimensional analysis shows that time-derivatives can be neglected. A non-linear system of differential equations from literature is used to model the postsynaptic current and hemodynamic parameters at the neuron level. A key point of the full model is to explain how these quantities provide, at the level of the whole head, the moment of the dipolar source term of the EEG problem and the behaviour in time of the optical parameters of the DOT model. The well-posedness of the timedependent EEG problem is proved by the subtraction approach for moments with L2-regularity in time and continuous source trajectories. For the time-dependent DOT model with continuous optical parameters in time, standard results of functional analysis apply. We explain the full pipeline from the stimulation current up to the simulated signals recorded at the electroptodes. Numerical results for a three-dimensional realistic head model illustrate the capacity of simultaneous EEG/DOT measurements to attest neurovascular coupling between the neural activity and changes in the hemodynamic parameters

Associations of Global Burden of Diseases study-derived dietary scores with mortality and chronic disease risk: a comprehensive analysis from the prospective NutriNet-Santé study

No full text
International audienceThe Global Burden of Diseases (GBD) network has proposed theoretical minimum risk exposure level (TMREL) for leading risk factors associated with diet that minimize the risk of morbimortality from chronic diseases. TMREL can be applied to develop follow-up or evaluation indicators in individual studies. The validity of these scores can be tested by assessing associations with health outcomes in prospective cohorts. In this study conducted within the NutriNet-Santé cohort, four dietary scores (TMREL-Risk Score, TMREL-Probability of adequacy, TMREL-standardized distance, and TMREL dietary score) using different scoring methods were developed, with higher scores reflecting less healthy diets. Associations of these scores with the risk of type 2 diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and mortality were estimated using multivariable Cox proportional hazards models, adjusted for a wide range of covariates. Counterfactual and marginal structural models were used to infer causality. Analyses were conducted in a sample of up to103,324 participants (78.3% women, mean age of 43.6 years old (y) (SD=14.6)), followed for a median of 8.47 (IQR=14.7) years (2009-2024). The association with dietary scores (for 1SD-increase) varied in magnitude for each health outcome. For mortality, HR varied from 1.12 (95%CI =1.07-1.18, ) to 1.18 (95%CI =1.12-1.24) for TMRELStdis and TMREL-DI, for overall cancer from 1.07 (95%CI =1.03-1.12) to 1.09 (1.04-1.13) for TMREL-RS and TMREL-PA, for CVD from 1.07 (95%CI =1.00-1.16) to 1.12 (95%CI =1.04-1.20) for TMREL-PA and TMREL-RS, and for type 2 diabetes from 1.33 (95%CI =1.23-1.43) to 1.47 (95%CI =1.36-1.59) for TMREL-DI and TMREL-PA. Marginal structural Cox models strengthened all associations compared to classical analyses. Standardized survival curves showed clear associations, especially for the risk of cancer and type 2 diabetes. Dietary scores based on GBD TMREL can serve as key indicators for characterizing diet quality in relation to long-term health, and using different scoring systems helped evaluate the robustness of these associations

aleosha eridani, Marcela Mandiola, Nicola Ríos, Florian Vörös, « Après le Mayo Feminista. La transformation féministe des universités chiliennes à l’épreuve du patriarcat, de l’hétéronormativité et du néolibéralisme », Revue Genre, sexualité & société, n°34 "Hétéro(cis)normativité", décembre 2025.In this interview, the Hecho en Género collective addresses the issues raised by the Mayo Feminista, a student occupation movement against gender-based violence that spread across Chilean universities from May 2018 onwards. After situating themselves within the history of Chilean academic feminisms, the members of the collective highlight the importance of the student movement in challenging the social order imposed by the dictatorship. They then retrace the spread of feminist occupations across the country’s universities, the depoliticisation of their demands by neoliberal public policies, and the internal debates within feminist activism. The collective also refers to a field survey they conducted for the Chilean Ministry of Education, which details how public policies against gender-based violence fail at meeting LGBTQIA+ students’ needs. The interview concludes with an analysis of the difficult institutionalisation of feminist and queer practices and knowledge in Chilean universities, in a context of anti-gender mobilisations.
