Canada is at various crossroads and one of these is STEM education. The Ca nadian government anticipates that STEM will be a catalyst for economic and cultural change. After a decade of federal policies and funds for STEM educa tion, there is little to show in K-12 schools and teacher education programs. The vast majority of non-profit, private sector, and professional society policy recommendations reinforce the federal government’s lead. This chapter pro vides a critical analysis of challenges, policies, practices, and trends in STEM education in Canada. The chapter primarily focuses on K-12 STEM education and teacher education and tangentially on postsecondary STEM education. The analysis is presented in three sections: 1) context of STEM education in Canada with a focus on economic and educational policies and funding trends; 2) trends in frameworks and systems of K-12 STEM education and STEM teacher education; and 3) oversights of engineering and technology in STEM education practice and policy across Canada. For instance, five provinces and two territories do not have technology course requirements for graduation from high school. None of the provinces and territories have an engineering requirement. Integrative STEM education, a potential catalyst recommended by a range of researchers and teachers across the world, has also not had much influence on K-12 schools and teacher education in Canada. Perhaps Indig enous ways of holistic learning and integrative STEM will influence necessary changes. Iterations on STEM, such as STEAM, STEEM, and STEM-H pro vide additional challenges across the educational system in Canada. There is a profound sense that STEM education has to change but there are also long standing disagreements over the how, what, and why of necessary changes. Through critical analysis, this chapter provides insights into key issues and trends in STEM education in Canada to facilitate potential changes

The role of universities has expanded from graduating students with a degree only, but also to obtain high skills of researching. Consequently, the government is expecting the universities to attract National and International Scholars and researchers. Research Based Pedagogy has become the teaching and learning approaches adopted by the universities and higher education institutions in the UAE. Research Based Pedagogy is referred to as a significant concept that would facilitate in creating research culture and to graduate students with high cognitive thinking order. The government of the UAE is viewing research as an investment that would enhance the quality of life and solve complex future problems. Learning research in the university would enhance, self-efficacy, critical thinking skills, analysis, synthesis, and complex cognitive skills. Accordingly, the impact on quality of learning outcomes is expected to be positive and impressive. The purpose of this study is to explore the role of Research-Based Pedagogy (RBP) in enhancing the quality of learning in Higher Education in the UAE. The study employed Mixed Methods Research Approach and Concurrent Triangulation design to collect and analyze the data. For qualitative data collection, sampling selection was purposely implemented in this study. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to explore the opinions of six faculty members (N=6) working, and teaching in Higher education Institutions in the UAE on RBP. The interviewees vary on their year of experience on RBP and researching in Higher education. Thematic coding analysis was applied in data analysis. For quantitative data collection, convenient sampling was implemented for this study, the questionnaires were distributed to 200 (N=200) undergraduates who were studying and conducting research in selected Higher Education Institutions in the UAE. The majority of students are Emirati who are studying and conducting research as part of their learning. One institution is the federal government and another one is semi-government, and both are research-based universities. Findings from the questionnaire of 200 students (N=200) revealed the influence of research-based pedagogy (studying research methods and conducting research) in higher education on students’ overall quality of learning. Some students exhibited joy while conducting research, others referred to their success to their instructor’s feedback and guidance. The questionnaire results underlined that studying and conducting research for undergraduate students have an influence on their skills. Enhancing quality of learning, is defined as the engagement of students in knowledge creation, communication and establishing. In addition, students have acknowledged the importance of researching in developing the maturity of their judgment. This was demonstrated by 43 % who strongly believe in the influence of studying and conducting research on their personal life. In another word, studying research and conducting it have helped students to value different perspectives. Furthermore, the study has also revealed that RBP has an impact on enhancing complex thinking skills such as critical and analytical skills which was demonstrated by 72%. The outcome of the study revealed that there is a common ground agreement among faculty members on the positive impact of research-based pedagogy learning and teaching on enhancing the quality of learning experiences of students. Faculty members strongly believe researching can improve decision making and are actively engaged in creating knowledge. However, there is also a concern on the seriousness of students on continuing learning through researching. Strategic Management Approaches for Sustainable Handling of Construction and Demolition Wastes Through a Q-Rung Orthopair Probabilistic Hesitant Fuzzy Set Decision Model

    No full text
Sustainable management of construction and demolition wastes (CDWs) has become a pressing global issue in social, environmental, and economic contexts, involving complex technological, engineering, management, and regulatory challenges. Recently, many CDW management strategies have been developed based on the barrier attributes of reuse distribution. However, no strategy can simultaneously address all barrier attributes of reuse distribution. Furthermore, no research has assessed and modelled the identified CDW management strategies to determine optimality. On this basis, the presence of multiple barrier attributes, varying attribute priority, and a wide range of data allow for the modelling of CDW management strategies under complex multiple-attribute decision-making problems. This study develops the fuzzy-weighted zero inconsistency (FWZIC) and fuzzy decision by opinion score method (FDOSM)-based multiplicative multiple objective optimizations by ratio analysis (MULTIMOORA) with the q-rung orthopair probabilistic hesitant fuzzy set (q-ROPHFS) to address this problem. The developed q-ROPHFS–FWZIC method prioritized and weighed the main and sub-barrier attributes of reuse distribution in CDW management strategies. The developed q-ROPHFS–FDOSM is used to score the CDW management strategies. Then, the MULTIMOORA method is used to model 51 CDW management strategies to determine the optimum one. Results showed that Strategy46 modelled first in six q values because it had the most essential attributes (i.e. cost, market, value-for-money, experience, infrastructure, management, risk, and trust). Strategy17 and Strategy20 are the least sustainable strategies because they had only one attribute (i.e. experience). Sensitivity analysis, systematic modelling, and comparison analysis are conducted to validate and evaluate the stability and robustness of the proposed methods. The implications of this study would likely benefit a variety of stakeholders involved in the construction industry, including construction companies, architects, engineers, policymakers, and members of the public

Revealing the Adoption Factors of Electric Vehicles in Dubai

    No full text
Electric vehicles (EVs) have gained interest in the last decades, as a significant amount of people in Dubai depend on private vehicles. Hence, it is critical to consider public views regarding environmental concerns in the transportation industry. There were many factors related to the adoption of EVs, and this study specifically investigates the impact of economic factors, performance, and charging infrastructure on the willingness to adopt EVs. The study utilises a quantitative approach by conducting survey, and the structure of the questionnaire included three main components: the provision of background information on the participants, their perspectives on the factors influencing the purchase of EVs, and their general level of knowledge and awareness. The main objective is to identify the factors influencing consumer behaviour towards EV adoption in Dubai. By using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and regression analysis, our findings indicate a significant association between the willingness to adopt EVs and several factors, including the performance characteristics and economic cost. Surprisingly, the research fails to provide enough evidence to prove the claim that the sufficient availability of charging infrastructure has a positive impact on the willingness to adopt EVs. This research provides significant insights into the dynamics of EV adoption in Dubai. It also offers strategic recommendations for policymakers and stakeholders to prioritise their focus on efforts that lead to encourage sustainable transportation practices and decrease carbon emissions in urban areas
