    The FW2.2-LIKE/CELL NUMBER REGULATOR (FWL/CNR) gene family comprises PLAC8 domain-containing membrane-associated proteins and was named in reference to its founding member, the FW2.2 gene, which determines fruit size in tomato via a negative regulation on cell divisions. The function of PLAC8 domain-containing FWL/CNR proteins in plants remains largely unexplored. Only recently has the molecular and cellular mechanism of FW2.2 been described as regulating plasmodesmata-mediated cell-to-cell communication. In the present study, we provided a functional analysis of SlFWL genes in tomato, aiming at investigating any direct role in the control of organ growth. Based on a combination of molecular and cellular approaches, we selected three SlFWL proteins, namely SlFWL2, -4 and -5, which are localized at the plasma membrane. Gain- and loss-of-function transgenic plants were generated to explore their putative role as regulators of organ growth in tomato. This allowed us to shed light more specifically on the critical involvement of SlFWL5 in leaf and hypocotyl development. We show here that SlFWL5 is localized at plasmodesmata, and that it regulates leaf size and morphology, and hypocotyl growth, by promoting cell expansion, as unexpected for a CELL NUMBER REGULATOR protein.     On-orbit Interval Estimation of Satellite Inertia Parameter based on Zonotopic Kalman Filter

    Accurately determining a satellite's moment of inertia is crucial for its flight mission, as it can change due to fuel depletion or other factors. This paper proposes an interval estimation approach using a zonotopic Kalman filter to determine the satellite's moment of inertia. The proposed method is based on the attitude dynamics and conservation of angular momentum of satellites, using data from the satellite's gyroscopes and Hall sensors in the reaction wheels. Given the measurement noise interval from these sensors, interval estimation of the satellite's inertia parameter is performed using a zonotopic Kalman filter. This process necessitates a maneuver involving rotation around all three axes to achieve an accurate and consistent estimation of the inertia interval. Numerical simulations are provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed estimation method

    A Virome Scanning of Saffron (Crocus sativus L.) at the National Scale in Iran Using High-Throughput Sequencing Technologies

    Saffron (Crocus sativus L.) is a vegetatively propagated crop of high economic and cultural value, potentially affected by viral infections that may impact its productivity. Despite Iran's dominance in global saffron production, knowledge of its virome remains limited. In this study, we conducted the first nationwide virome survey of saffron in Iran employing a high-throughput sequencing (HTS) approach on pooled samples obtained from eleven provinces in Iran and one location in Afghanistan. Members of three virus families were detected-Potyviridae (Potyvirus), Solemoviridae (Polerovirus), and Geminiviridae (Mastrevirus)-as well as one satellite from the family Alphasatellitidae (Clecrusatellite). A novel Potyvirus, tentatively named saffron Iran virus (SaIRV) and detected in three provinces, shares less than 68% nucleotide identity with known Potyvirus species, thus meeting the ICTV criteria for designation as a new species. Genetic diversity analyses revealed substantial intrapopulation SNP variation but no clear geographical clustering. Among the two wild Crocus species sampled, only Crocus speciosus harbored turnip mosaic virus. Virome network and phylogenetic analyses confirmed widespread viral circulation likely driven by corm-mediated propagation.     Mining belowground and aboveground microbiome data to identify microbial biomarkers of grapevine health and yield

    Vineyards are home to a wide diversity of microorganisms that interact with plants and with each other. Some microorganisms are grapevine pathogens, such as the oomycete Plasmopara viticola, which causes grapevine downy mildew (DM). Others have positive effects on vine health through protection against pathogens, resistance to abiotic stress and improved nutrition. These beneficial plant-microbe and microbe-microbe interactions, as well as the conservation of microbial diversity, have gained more attention in recent years because they could represent an alternative to the use of fungicides and fertilizer in viticulture and improve vineyard resilience to multiple stresses including those caused by climate change. In this study, we aimed to (i) identify microbial candidates for the biocontrol of DM and (ii) identify microbial biomarkers of high and stable yields over time. We analyzed the microbiota (i) in leaves and topsoil in seven pairs of vineyard plots with contrasting susceptibility to DM according to long-term epidemiological records collected in the Bordeaux region and (ii) in roots and soil in ten pairs of vineyard plots with contrasting yields according to a long-term yield database collected in the Champagne region. We combined differential abundance analyses, Random Forest algorithm, and Threshold Indicator Taxa Analysis (TITAN), and we identified fungal and bacterial taxa that were significantly more abundant in plots with low susceptibility to DM and in plots with high and stable yields. Our results revealed that several species of basidiomycete yeasts were significantly more abundant in the grapevine phyllosphere of plots with low susceptibility to DM, while taxa belonging to arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi were significantly more abundant in plots with high and stable yields. These results suggest that both the aboveground and belowground microbiomes play a role in the performance of grapevine. The relationships between grapevine performance and the abundance of specific microbial taxa should however be analyzed in controlled experiments to demonstrate the role played by microorganisms. I will present results of in vitro confrontation tests between basidiomycete yeasts and P. viticola to show that mining microbiome data can guide the search for microbial taxa beneficial to grapevine

    Is the Public Sector losing the Battle for Talent? Evidence from long French Panel Data

    Abstract We exploit an exceptionally long administrative panel dataset (1988-2019) for France to estimate the unconditional quantile effects of public sector employment, while accounting for individual fixed effects. We find that the public sector wage gap is broadly negative across the whole wage distribution after controlling for observable and unobservable heterogeneity. The public sector compresses the wage distribution, with particularly large wage penalties observed at the top. This compression effect is partly concealed by the incidental parameter bias, which we correct using a split-panel jackknife method. We document how a combination of political and business cycles aligns with the evolution of the wage gap over the 32-year period. Despite offering lower pay, the public sector attracts individuals with, on average, better observed and unobserved skills. However, this skill gap narrows significantly over time and vanishes among top earners, calling for policies to restore the attractiveness of public sector management careers.IdEx Bordeau
