Recently, polymer composites have been extensively researched in industrial fields such as electrical conductance, ohmic heating, electromagnetic shielding and electrostatic discharge, particularly in engineering polymers reinforced with carbonaceous additions. Herein, fullerene (C60) and short carbon fiber (CF) were incorporated with acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer (ABS) using melt-compounding followed by an injection-molding process. Composite samples were produced with contents of 20 wt% of CF besides 0.1, 0.5 and 1.0 wt% of C60. Tensile, impact, hardness and wear tests, conductive atomic force microscopy, dynamic mechanical analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, melt flow index tests and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were performed to characterize mechanical, electrical, thermomechanical, thermal, melt-flow and structural behaviors of ABS-based composites involving CF and C60. Based on the mechanical test findings obtained for the developed composites, comprising tensile and impact test results, C60 additions contributed to a significant rise in tensile strength and impact resistance of CF-reinforced ABS composites, with a 20% increase in tensile resistance being achieved by introduction C60 into the ABS/CF structure. C60 addition enhanced efficiency by 50% in terms of tensile modulus. Electrical conductivity measurements confirmed that C60 nanoparticles and CF exhibited a synergy. The optimum synergistic ratio of C60/CF was obtained as 0.5/20. The conductive path in the ABS/CF composite system was established by incorporating C60 with different loading amounts. SEM micrographs of composites demonstrated that C60 nanoparticles were dispersed homogeneously into the ABS matrix involving lower amounts of C60. (c) 2025 The Author(s). Plant-based additives or botanicals, have garnered considerable interest in the aquaculture industry for their multifaceted benefits in fish diets. In this study, a 30 days short term feeding experiment was designed to determine the effects of Myrrh (Commiphora myrrha) essential oil on hematological, biochemical parameters and tissue specific mRNA expression responses of common carp (Cyprinus carpio). Fish were experimentally infected with Aeromonas hydrophila and monitored for 20 days after been divided in four groups: a control group without C. myrrha and three experimental groups supplemented with 0.25%, 0.50%, and 1.0% C. myrrha essential oil (CMO 0.25, CMO 0.50, and CMO 1.0, respectively). Results revealed a significant increase in RBC count, hemoglobin, and hematocrit values compared to the control diet. Positive effects of C. myrra supplementation have been observed also in serum biochemistry parameters. mRNA transcripts of il-1 ss, tnf-alpha, il-8, sod, cat, gpx and gst genes significantly increased in spleen and liver tissue of fish fed with C. myrra supplemented diets. After the challenge with Aeromonas hydrophila, the survival rates were 60%, and 83.33%, respectively, suggesting enhanced fish resistance in the CMO 0.50 and CMO 1.0 groups compared to the control. The results suggest the immunomodulatory roles of C. myrrha essential oil

Seafood contains a variety of bioactive substances, including proteins, peptides, omega-3 fatty acids, chitin, chitosan, vitamins, and minerals, many of which have health-promoting features like antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antihypertensive, and anticancer effects. However, a large amount of seafood processing by-products (such as heads, viscera, and shells) are frequently wasted, resulting in economic and nutritional losses. Effective biotechnological interventions, such as enzymatic extraction, fermentation, microencapsulation, and membrane separation, can improve the stability, bioavailability, and functional efficiency of these bioactive components for use in food and pharmaceutical products. Seafood-derived nutraceuticals, including fish protein hydrolysates, omega-3 supplements, and chitosan-based medicines, have shown promising results in cardiovascular, metabolic, and neurological health. However, obstacles remain, such as sustainable procurement of marine bioresources, contamination hazards such as heavy metals, and the need for sophisticated extraction processes to ensure purity and efficacy. By utilizing marine biodiversity and sustainable processing methods, seafood-based functional components have the potential to improve human health by providing safe, natural, and effective alternatives to synthetic medications while reducing waste in the seafood sector. Therefore, this review aims to bridge the gap between marine resources and biotechnological innovation, promoting seafood-derived compounds as key players in health-focused food and pharmaceutical industries.Scientific Research Project Office of Cukurova University [FBA-2022-15153, TSA-2023-16116]This work was supported by the Scientific Research Project Office of Cukurova University under contract No.: FBA-2022-15153 and TSA-2023-16116

Mirror, which is defined as the word 'gözgü' in Turkish, 'ayine' in Persian, and 'mir'at' in Arabic, is one of the most important objects used by human beings from past to present. Mirror constitutes a rich source with its symbolic meanings for history, culture, myths and literature. The first mirror was obtained by polishing copper in Mesopotamia in 4000 BC and in Egypt in 3000 BC. The oldest mirror in the world was found in Çatal Höyük. The Chinese obtained the mirror by polishing bronze in 2000 BC. As with the mirrors belonging to the Islamic period, the mirrors used by the Seljuks were small in size, their front faces were polished, and their back sides were decorated with relief motifs. The Ottomans, on the other hand, used richly decorated mirrors made of gold, silver, jade, iron and bronze, and mostly with handles. Venice, which had an important place in the deep-rooted history of mirrors in the sixteenth century, and the glazing technique they developed in mirror making took its place in history and was used until the 19th century. The aim of this study is to try to examine the word közgü, which is used in Garaibu's-sıgar, one of Nevâyî's divans, within the framework of collocation and conceptual relationship. The data obtained is as follows: 1. Collocations Based on Noun + Noun Association: Beauty-Mirror, Mirror-Mirror. 2. Collocations with the word Közgü in its complement form: August rose-Mirror, Day-Mirror, Heart-Mirror. 3. Collocation Based on Noun + Preposition Association: Horseshoe-Mirror. 4. Preposition + Collocation Based on Noun Association: Bluestone-Mirror. 5. Collocation Based on Noun + Verb Association: Sword-Mirror. 6. Collocation Based on Noun + Suffix-Verb Association: Drop-Mirror. 7. Collocation Based on Noun + Verb / Compound Verb Association: Mirror-Mirror, Heart-Mirror. 8. Collocation Based on Attribution Group + Noun Association: Face beauty-Mirror.Türkçede gözgü, Farsçada âyine, Arapçada mir'at sözcüğü ile karşılanan ayna, insanoğlunun geçmişten bugüne kullandığı en önemli nesnelerden biridir. 2. Közgü Sözcüğünün Tamlanan Durumunda Olduğu Eş dizimlilikler: Ağustos gülü- Ayna, Gün-Ayna, Gönül-Ayna gibi. 3. Ad + Edat Birlikteliğine Dayalı Eş dizimlilik: At nalı-Ayna. 4. Edat (Cümle başı edatı)+ Ad Birlikteliğine Dayalı Eş dizimlilik: Göztaşı-Ayna. 5. Ad+ Fiilimsi Birlikteliğine Dayalı Eş Dizimlilik: Kılıç-Ayna. 6. Ad + Ek-Fiil Birlikteliğine Dayalı Eş dizimlilik: Damla-Ayna.7. Ad+ Fiil / Birleşik Fiil Birlikteliğine Dayalı Eş dizimlilik: Ayna-Ayna, Gönül-Ayna. 8. İsnad Grubu + Ad Birlikteliğine Dayalı Eş dizimlilik: Yüz güzellik-Ayna

The Role of Idiomatics in L2 Acquisition: Insights from Arabic-Speaking Doctoral Students

    No full text
While extensive research examines second/foreign language (L2) learners' proficiency in processing or producing idiomatic-figurative language (idiomatics), fewer studies have investigated L2 educators' perspectives on idiomatics and teaching methods. This descriptive qualitative case study explored the beliefs and experiences of four native Arabic-speaking doctoral students enrolled in a Second Language Acquisition and Technology in Education program regarding idiomatics and related instructional approaches. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using a three-phased thematic approach to identify discrete themes and subthemes. The findings indicate participants' strong appreciation for instruction in idiomatics, emphasizing its perceived importance within language acquisition. They also shared instructional strategies to enhance learners' idiomatic competence. The study suggests that greater emphasis on idiomatics in L2 education could enhance communicative competence and recommends incorporating contextualized, authentic, and multimodal approaches alongside opportunities for natural communication. These insights contribute to a growing body of research advocating for idiomatic competence as a critical, yet often underrepresented, dimension of communicative language teaching. They also highlight the need for language teacher education programs to address this area more explicitly

In recent years, virtual reality (VR) has emerged as a remarkable technology and a powerful educational and simulation tool for developing individuals' skills in various fields. VR enables users to experience complex, dangerous, or costly scenarios to replicate in the physical world in safe and controlled environments, thereby accelerating skill development by providing experiential learning opportunities. While numerous systematic review studies in the literature examine the effects of VR on the development of specific skills, no study comprehensively examines the use of VR for skill development. This research aims to reveal the general trends in studies using VR for skill development. As a result of the search conducted on 12 different databases, 3983 records were obtained, and after applying various inclusion/exclusion criteria, the remaining 130 studies were subjected to systematic review. In selecting the studies included in the systematic review, we considered the following criteria: the studies had to be research articles published in scientific journals, published between 2004 and 2023, published in English, use SG technology, be conducted for skills training or development, and use experimental methods. This systematic review study used the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) method. The analysis revealed that VR is most frequently used to develop behavioral skills. Studies on the use of SG for skill development have been increasing since the 2010s. SG technologies that surround the user are most frequently used for skill development. The effect of SG on skill development is mainly studied in adult groups. Rubric tests and questionnaires are mostly used as data collection tools in the studies. The data obtained are generally analyzed using descriptive and predictive methods. SG is mainly used for skill development purposes for 90-240 minutes. Most of the research on the effect of SG on skill development is conducted in the US. The findings of this research will guide future studies on the use of SG for skill development purposes. According to ancient Greek and Roman writers, chestnut, which was reported to have been taken from Anatolia to Greece in the 5th century BC and from there to Southern Italy and Spain, is an important species in the Fagaceae family, with both valuable fruit and wood. The species known as the European chestnut, which naturally spreads in forest areas in our country, is Castanea sativa. Chestnut grows at different altitudes from 200 m to 1800 m in its natural distribution area, depending on climate and latitude, and in regions where annual rainfall varies between 750 and 1200 mm and annual average temperature is between 8 C° and 15 ° C. The chestnut plant, which creates an important habitat for the ecosystem and acts as a food source for other living things, is under the threat of many diseases and pests, including its roots, trunks, branches, leaves and fruits. The chestnut gall wasp is a very important pest that prevents shoot development and flowering by laying its eggs in the buds of the chestnut and creating galls, causing 50-70% yield losses in the fruit, and causing damages that can lead to death in trees if population densities increase. The release of T. sinensis has been proven to be the most effective method for controlling the chestnut gall wasp. In this study, T. sinensis release studies carried out by the Zonguldak Regional Directorate of Forestry within the scope of chestnut gall wasp control between 2021-2025 were evaluated. The production of T. sinensis was carried out in the Forest Pests and Biological Control Laboratory in Gökçebey Forest Nursery. In order to preserve the parasitoids produced for release, processed boxes were kept in the cold at +6 °C. Since April, field exits were carried out to observe the galls formation in chestnut trees. According to the observations obtained from the field studies carried out during the period when the temperature values were 14-15 °C, in order to ensure the adaptation of T. sinensis to the external environment conditions, 2 °C increases were made per 2 days to equal to the external temperature. After the air temperature in the cold room was equalized with the external temperature, the galls in the boxes was taken to the production pergola in the open air. 334,185 galls were collected by the Zongıuldak Regional Directorate of Forestry for 5 years. 23,680 female and 13,302 male individuals obtained from these galls were released into nature. In the first 3 years of biological control studies, galls of Yalova origin and individuals obtained from these galls were used, while in 2024 and 2025, galls were collected mainly from within the borders of the Zonguldak Regional Directorate of Forestry and individuals obtained from these galls were used. In 2024 and 2025, the locations where gall collection activities were carried out were increased, and in this context; galls were collected from Ereğli (60), Cuma (96), Ormanlı (144), Gölderesi (99), Bendere (27), Kumluca (19), Kurucaşile (29), Amasra (87), Akçasu (66), Alaplı (38) and Kocaman (36) compartments. At the end of the 5-year biological control process, it was observed that only 10,000 of the 76,000 galls collected from Yalova Province, which was the leading location at the beginning of the process, were collected as of 2025, and Zonguldak Regional Directorate of Forestry’s resources were used at a rate of 86.84% in the supply of galls.

Dose-dependent effects of CuO nanoparticles on germination and early seedling growth in Prunus avium

    No full text
Nanoparticle pollution results from the release of nanoparticles into the environment, which are widely used in many areas today. For this reason, studies on nanoparticle pollution have gained significant momentum in recent years. However, studies on the effects of nanoparticle pollution on forest ecosystems and forest trees are restricted. The current study aimed to reveal the effects of copper oxide (CuO) nanoparticles, which are known for their high toxicity compared to other metal oxide nanoparticles, on the seed germination and seedling traits of Prunus avium. Seeds from 15 geographically diverse Turkish populations were treated with CuO nanoparticle solutions at five concentrations (200, 400, 600, 800, and 1,000 mg/L) to evaluate nanoparticle effects. Multiple growth parameters were quantified, including germination success (rate and percentage), radicle dimensions (length and thickness), and plumule elongation. The study results reveal that CuO nanoparticle applications affect all characters except the germination rate. Generally, germination and seedling traits are positively affected at low nanoparticle doses. However, with increasing doses, the parameters begin to decrease, and when using nanoparticles in high doses, a decrease is observed that can exceed 25% compared to the control group. In addition, it was found that there was a significant decline in both germination characteristics and seedling development as the dose increased after exceeding a certain dose level (400 and 600 mg/L). Significant differences were also found among seed populations. The lowest values for most parameters were recorded in the populations of Karab & uuml;k/Yenice and Bolu/ Mudurnu, whereas the highest ones were observed in the populations of Tekirda & gbreve;/& Scedil;ark & ouml;y, & Ccedil;anakkale/Lapseki, and Kocaeli/Kefken, Turkey

Experimental performance investigation of high reflective and diffuse reflective concentrating photovoltaic/ thermal (CPVT) systems using non-imaging concentrators from energy, exergy, and economic viewpoint

    No full text
A diffuse reflective (DR) surface in a concentrating photovoltaic thermal system (CPVT) system can provide uniform solar energy dispersion, minimizing hot spots, uneven lighting, and efficiency loss compared to costlier, highly reflective (HR) surfaces. This study uniquely compares the performance of HR-CPVT and DR-CPVT systems, highlighting the significant thermal and electrical efficiency of HR-CPVT while demonstrating the cost-effectiveness of DR-CPVT. The direct comparison of these systems under varying conditions provides novel insights into the trade-offs between high performance and economic feasibility. The performances of CPVTs were examined under various seasonal and weather conditions. The advantage of HR-CPVT was less pronounced in autumn due to seasonal effects. In the summer season, the cooling effect of water becomes more prominent, and the HR-CPVT outperformed the DR-CPVT by 6.1 to 8.5 %, depending on the mass flow rate in terms of overall efficiency. This advancement majorly arises from thermal efficiency. HR-CPVT achieved about a 5.6-7.9 % larger thermal efficiency. However, the electrical efficiency difference was minimal (similar to 0.5 %) and diminished to 0.1 % in the afternoon due to practical PV power generation limits. Despite its high reflectivity, HR-CPVT showed only marginal exergetic benefits over DR-CPVT. The simple payback period was calculated to be 3.65 years for HRCPVT, while it was only 3.19 years for DR-CPVT due to its lower installment cost. RSM analysis accurately predicts the experimental results.TUBITAK-2219 [1059B192203008]; IFS Collaborative Research Project [J24I075]This study was conducted within the scope of a research program TUBITAK-2219 (Application No: 1059B192203008) and IFS Collaborative Research Project (No: J24I075) .
